Great video and excellent advice. I am leaning towards Mobil 1 for my 2019 Softail Slim that I purchased a year ago. I am planning to do my first 3-hole oil change and wanted to get your input on the if I should be using Mobil 1 20W-50 Full Synthetic for all 3-holes or should I use Mobil 1 20W-50 for the engine oil replacement only? If so, what should I use for the Transmission and Primary? Please advise. Thank you
@sikbaggers

youll need a roughly 85-140 for transmission and you can find dedicated "primary" fluids everywhere

Great video! I've done these oil changes several times over the years, but this time I was looking to see if anyone has found any tricks by now about getting any more oil out of the engine case since during an oil change, you're really just draining the oil tank. There is still a bit of old oil in the engine. It's been fine over the years. Was just curious. Thanks for the video!
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers Жыл бұрын
yeah youll never get all the old oil out and its fine...you would be surprised to see how much they dont drain on a HD service. When it slows down, they plug it back up. get her hot and drain her, thats about it.

(he had a serious quad accident leaving him paralysed from neck) I've been cleaning the bike up first but my next step was oil changes altho i dont want to try starting the bike with 12yr old oil and was going to do an oil change first, change battery and turn the bike over by hand with spark plugs removed to make sure nothing has seized. Will put a tiny spot of oil in the spark plug holes beforehand. Your vid on the oil change simplified the procedure greatly for me. Very helpful. I liked how you talked about cross-threading of bolts/screws. However, the very best way to prevent the cross-thread of bolts/screws is to put the bolt to the hole then turn left/counter clockwise until you hear a click. When you hear a click that means the treads are on track and wont cross

@@sikbaggers I understand completely! Carlini is sold out of the bars I’m putting on. I’ve been waiting on a bare bones seat from Lapera for 3 months.

I have a question about using alloy bolts for the derby cover. Should I add anti-seize to prevent bonding to the aluminum?
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers 6 ай бұрын
you can use anti seize on them but you will need to check them frequently in case they decide to back out.

My guess is the Heritage and the 06 Softail Deluxe differ just a little bit because my service manual doesn't agree with yours. However, they are close. My conundrum is that when I add the proper amount of oil as per the manual the dipstick shows an overfull condition. My manual also gives cold check and hot check instructions and should be performed on the jiffy stand. It even says that on the back of the dipstick...on the jiffy stand. The manual indicates that cold the oil should be at or just below the bottom weld of the filler neck. But when it is, the dipstick shows the oil is above the full line. On the hot check the oil is halfway up the filler tube. I took out some oil with a clean turkey baster and now on a cold check the oil is a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the weld on the filler neck but the dipstick still shows overfull. My manual say's to install up to 3.5 quarts of oil with a new filter but that seems to be way too much oil. What the heck am I missing here. Just to be clear I had the dipstick open to atmosphere when I drained the oil and I installed a new empty filter. Too much oil in Tampa ;-) .

Hey joe...yes you are correct about the amounts from yours to mine...they are very different size twin cams and you will need to use your service manual for sure on the specs. 88 vs 103 I would check it hot...in your case with it showing too much oil cold...but when its cold that doesnt really matter...it matters when the bike is running and the temps are hot...thats when you want the protection. Are you getting blow by? Oil dripping from your air cleaner when its hot or your riding? Also have you changed out the OEM disptick to an aftermarket one? Is your bike lowered in the rear? Bigger wheel in the rear or front? all of these things can effect the way your dipstick reads

How often would you do transmission flush/ change? I'm trying to learn Harleys. I finally stepped up from rice burners?

5000 miles Motor, 10000 miles primary, 20000 miles transmission..the best way to do it in my opinion is every other oil change, do all 3 holes and youll never have to worry about it or try to remember what you changed last lol

How often should I conduct a 3 hole oil change?
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers 2 жыл бұрын
According to the manufacturer's service manual, you should change the engine oil at 5,000 miles. Primary oil should change at 10,000 miles, and trans fluid at 20,000 miles. A transmission oil change should happen every year, regardless of the miles. I do a 3 hole change every other oil change...makes it easy to remember

At the very end of the video the last time you checked the motor oil, you cut the video short if the dipstick says, you have to check it on the side. What was your final result with it on the Jiffy stand?
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers 6 ай бұрын
if you look at the bike on the lift at 20:43 the bike was on the jiffy stand..you can clearly see how the front wheel is sitting in the chock crooked.

Hi, thanks for the video. Wouldn't it be a good idea to purge out the old motor oil? Just emptying the motor oil tank will leave the engine with about a third of old oil in the cycle. Thanks and kind regards from Switzerland, Andy

You can purge the systen if you wish, of course. The service manal does not call for it and if you take your bike to HD they wont do it either..but of course you can purge if you like, it wont hurt it
