I have my brother in laws 2003 Heritage Softail to service. Its been stored in a barn since 2009. (he had a serious quad accident leaving him paralysed from neck) I've been cleaning the bike up first but my next step was oil changes altho i dont want to try starting the bike with 12yr old oil and was going to do an oil change first, change battery and turn the bike over by hand with spark plugs removed to make sure nothing has seized. Will put a tiny spot of oil in the spark plug holes beforehand. Your vid on the oil change simplified the procedure greatly for me. I had no idea there were 3 oil drains on the bike till i watched this. Many many thanks for your vids.

great video. Just to add, there is now a half funnel that is made for removing the oil filter and allows the oil to drain into a catch pan instead of hitting the frame/engine. Mine has a hole and a rubber tube to direct it to the pan.

Very helpful. I liked how you talked about cross-threading of bolts/screws. However, the very best way to prevent the cross-thread of bolts/screws is to put the bolt to the hole then turn left/counter clockwise until you hear a click. When you hear a click that means the treads are on track and wont cross

Great video! I've done these oil changes several times over the years, but this time I was looking to see if anyone has found any tricks by now about getting any more oil out of the engine case since during an oil change, you're really just draining the oil tank. There is still a bit of old oil in the engine. It's been fine over the years. Was just curious. Thanks for the video!
@sikbaggers Жыл бұрын
yeah youll never get all the old oil out and its fine...you would be surprised to see how much they dont drain on a HD service. When it slows down, they plug it back up. get her hot and drain her, thats about it.

@joewest8262 жыл бұрын
My guess is the Heritage and the 06 Softail Deluxe differ just a little bit because my service manual doesn't agree with yours. However, they are close. My conundrum is that when I add the proper amount of oil as per the manual the dipstick shows an overfull condition. My manual also gives cold check and hot check instructions and should be performed on the jiffy stand. It even says that on the back of the dipstick...on the jiffy stand. The manual indicates that cold the oil should be at or just below the bottom weld of the filler neck. But when it is, the dipstick shows the oil is above the full line. On the hot check the oil is halfway up the filler tube. I took out some oil with a clean turkey baster and now on a cold check the oil is a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the weld on the filler neck but the dipstick still shows overfull. My manual say's to install up to 3.5 quarts of oil with a new filter but that seems to be way too much oil. What the heck am I missing here. Just to be clear I had the dipstick open to atmosphere when I drained the oil and I installed a new empty filter. Too much oil in Tampa ;-) .
@sikbaggers2 жыл бұрын
Hey joe...yes you are correct about the amounts from yours to mine...they are very different size twin cams and you will need to use your service manual for sure on the specs. 88 vs 103 I would check it hot...in your case with it showing too much oil cold...but when its cold that doesnt really matter...it matters when the bike is running and the temps are hot...thats when you want the protection. Are you getting blow by? Oil dripping from your air cleaner when its hot or your riding? Also have you changed out the OEM disptick to an aftermarket one? Is your bike lowered in the rear? Bigger wheel in the rear or front? all of these things can effect the way your dipstick reads

Good video as expected. Believe it or not your choice. Only replaced Derby cover O-ring twice since new 2009. Replaced original few years back just because, No discrepancies found. I do have a spare available. It goes with us on long rides out of state. Keep Shiny Side Up.

@@sikbaggers Good morning wish I was there at Sturgis, caught some your feed from there. Worked aerospace Delta II and 4. Know full well about o-ring failures. Appreciate all sound advice in Videos. Forwarded the Street Glide fairing video to my son, has 2017 SG. Keep Shiny side up.
