That isn't the label -- it is Taylor's management company. She's done exclusive Walmart or Target releases for years. It is one of the reasons she sells more records than almost anyone. Different diary versions, different photo layouts, different colors for the vinyl albums, ---- she spends a lot of time thinking about how to sell albums.

Not just a Target exclusive but on CD ONLY! I had actually forgotten that my car has a single disc player in it because I've literally never used it before. By the time I realized that I had to do a search for a Target that still had one in stock. I live in Texas so this lead me to a store I've not been to in the predominately Hispanic area of a town that was an hour away by car. Did I do the drive? You betcha. Best part was it gave me plenty of time to listen on the way home. ;D

Putting such a bop as a Target exclusive makes me wonder if it was purposeful and this might be being held back as a potential single to maybe chart again. At this point it seems very clear that she held off on the Lavender Haze video until Anti-Hero dropped from the #1 spot. Now I'm guessing they're trying to get Lavender Haze to take it, and then (based on Hits Different getting recently unblocked on KZbin) once that drops off they'll give it once last shot with Hits Different.

Exactly. 3 months is the usual delay between lead single and follow up, then another couple of months to the next one. That would take us to just before the tour starts and that's when I reckon Hits Different will be released as a single with Music Video to boot.

I could literally imagine this song being on the radio when I was in high school in the 90s, it was a special time, especially for music. But the alternative/grunge stuff was and may always be unmatched from then. Nirvana (obviously) Live, Radiohead, Garbage. It was such contrast from the sounds of the 80s and at that very angsty age of 13-17 that dare i say, hit different.

That is a huge bummer 😢 but it will eventually come to Spotify!! New Romantics started as a Target exclusive bonus track and became a single, so there’s always hope, even for radio play! We do have to remember that this approach, Taylor mixing traditional & innovative marketing/fan outreach techniques - its how she’s one of the last artists that can consistently move physical CDs or records. And to me that’s pretty cool, but believe she likely cares much more; To Taylor it’s important data that will inform her legacy and the power to keep creating whatever she likes. I’m alright with that and increases my willingness to put up with some of the more “annoying” business aspects. For me it’s very valuable to have a woman setting the new music industry records and dedicated to resilience as “trends change, rumors fly”. I can see why others might find that unartistic, frustrating, selling out… but you just don’t end up with Taylor’s accomplishments in a patriarchal world without trying very very hard, and getting crafty at times.

This song was produced by Taylor. Aaron and Jack and you can tell. There is Aaron's guitar and Jack's production with Taylor' writing. Taylor is going to have a song on the upcoming 'Barbie' movie soundtrack and some speculate it will be Hits Different because of the Kens lyric in the song. This could be a reason she has not put it on streaming services.

I'm coming back again because, I love this song, love your reaction to this one, and I agree with you. I think it's criminal that it's not on the 3 A.M. edition of Midnights either, I think it would have done so good as a single, and we ARE suffering because she has SO MANY good tracks that probably haven't been released. Side note, I just got a cool bumper sticker for my car that says, "Keep honking!!! I'm listening to Taylor Swift at an unreasonably high volume and can't hear a thing." I had to get it because it was so me lol. I listen to her every day almost.

@Steven in Stereo Steven Actually it is only the USA that is affected. International "Lavender" CD or Deluxe CD has this track and the 2 other bonuses that are on the Target version in USA. Now that Lavender Haze has been released as a Music Video, usual 3 month delay there I believe that Hits Different will be released as a full on single with a Music Video just prior to the start of The Eras Tour which is probably when the exclusivity contract with Target expires. Oh it's a brilliant song too.

The fact you mentioned Hanson 😭 I've been to over 300 concerts in my life in general...about 1/3rd has been Hanson. It was my kneejerk reaction to the song as well....to the point where i toyed with the idea of trying to get tix to see her in Tulsa/Texas (she didn't book an OK show) on this tour, knowing the guys are Swifties (and she loves them too, she used to say Taylor Hanson was her dream to duet with), because if she decided to bring them onstage with her, it would be something i didn't want to miss....even if it means a massive cross country drive for me. I can visualize and hear Taylor + Taylor soooo clearly lol. But I agree with everything you said about it. I cannot believe it hasn't been uploaded to streaming services yet.

So cool that you said it sounds like a Hanson track, since Taylor has replied in past interviews that her first celebrity crush was Taylor Hanson, lol. This is a great little bop, although I can see it not really fitting with the overall sound of Midnights, and for the 3am tracks, it's a bit too similar in vibe to Paris, which I think is a superior song. Another reason it's a Target exclusive could be that there has been speculation that it will be on the soundtrack of the new Barbie movie to be released this summer, so it wouldn't be released for public consumption, radio play, etc. until then. Who knows. Great reaction as always!

I think the song is plenty successful at this point, the big fans all know and love it and were able to hear it on KZbin etc. I think she doesn't want people dissecting her love life as much and this one was coming out before she even went public with their breakup. So she made it a bit more gatekept for a while.
