I feel she’s trying to save him after he drowns himself. She feels guilty because she cursed him. In Ever Since New York, he sings “ you don’t know nothing, just pretend you do” and “choose your words cause there’s no antidote for this curse” Taylor sings “ when you are young they assume YOU KNOW NOTHING” and “I knew I’d CURSE you for the longest time”. She also sings about being haunted ( as Harry in TWO GHOSTS trying to find a heartbeat .... which she also mentions in the Cardigan lyrics > “your heartbeat on the high line”= Fine Line. It’s all so obvious to me. Not to mention the paper airplane coming from the stool in the fog in the original video.

In a hypothetical world where these two videos are one and the same, I like to think that the drowning parts of the song show Taylor clinging onto music (represented by the piano) to survive the storm and prevent her being consumed by it; whilst Harry is submerged and enveloped by the endless flood but somehow still manages to barley hold on to that same music until the storm subsides. In a way both their characters emerge on the other side completely drenched and “scarred” by the same storm but it’s impacted them differently in the end; with Taylor’s character finding comfort from the cardigan and looking somehow uplifted from the experience as she sits by the piano. For Taylor’s character, the music saved her; whereas Harry’s character is sitting on the cold hard floor completely detached from his surroundings with a much more somber look, almost as if when the storm drained away it simultaneously drained him completely along with it and we don’t see the same symbolism for comfort for his character in the way Taylor’s one had the cardigan. On the last point, it’s interesting how the two songs make you feel very differently emotionally about a similar subject. When I hear Falling I feel emotionally drained and devastate and I empathise so strongly with The final scene when Harry is on the floor. Where as with Taylor’s song, I come away feeling as if someone has given me a warm hug and everything will be alright in the end. I think these two songs do a perfect job in reflecting two sides of the same coin, even if that wasn’t the original intention and their harmony was coincidental. ❤️

Taylor is looking for Harry in the ocean after he drowns from his latest relationship. She feels she needs to save him because she cursed him. It’s most definitely about Harry. If you read the lyrics to Two Ghosts and Ever Since New York, you will see a correlation ( call and response to these songs). As well, Taylor references Louis Tomlinson’s song Don’t Let it Break Your Heart where he sings “I know you left a part of you in New York under your bed in a box” ( most likely a message to Harry ). Taylor writes “and when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone’s bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite.” All these songs tie together to represent a triangle of love between Taylor, Harry and Louis. Much like in Othello where the words “Sweet Creature” are mentioned. Iago’s jealousy of Desdemona and his homoerotic r/sp with Othello.

Fan speculation- Harry co-wrote cardigan using a pseudonym, which he has done on numerous occasions for other artist. When you google the co-writer’s name, absolutely nothing comes up. A complete unknown co-writer. In an interview, Taylor’s manager, after this album came out, happen to mention that Taylor only writers with best in the industry, Sooooo-Another fan conspiracy theory? Probably...maybe?

Makes me scratch my head a bit when ppl say “they only dated a few months”.
