Being one who records whilst they work and edits in the twilight hours. I know the difficulties and how much effort goes into making these videos. Material like this is undervalued. Education has changed so much with KZbin. Society are gaining the equivalent of a KZbin plumbing degree. It's good when it's used for something positive like making individuals better engineers. Onsite experience is vital as well as real qualifications. Yet this media stream and experience passed on is helping nations strive to better engineering standards. It would have been a game changer if I had some of these videos when I initially qualified as a plumber 13 years ago. There was hardly anything like this to watch. It's great that the information is there for those that are thirsty to grow in their knowledge of the trade.

Wow. EXCELLENT job here Mr. Lavimoniere. I'm 47 and today I replaced a closet flange for the first time as I had to remove a subfloor in prep for a new one. I was nervous doing this as I was worried about breaking the 3" ABS pipe (home built in 1972). Turns out it was easy. My style was a little weird. Instead of the closet flange going inside the pipe, it went outside the pipe. I cut the main floor back a bit with a sawzall so I could get at the flange. I cut into it until I got close to the pipe. Then I took a screwdriver and pried it apart. I'd say only 20% of the flange was actually glued properly to the pipe. The other 80% was loose as a goose and came right off. Now the funny thing is I'm replacing a tile job I personally did about 15 years ago but back then I was too scared to replace the flange. It had been mounted in such a way that the holes that connected the bolts to the toilet were in the wrong place. The toilet bolts lined up with the holes on the flange that were open on the end. I hope that makes sense. Well when I went to tighten the toilet on those the bolts broke through so I took two lag bolts I had laying around and used them instead. They were put right into some worn out MDF so no holding power at all! I credit the great caulking job all the way around the toilet for ensuring no leaks and a tight toilet for all those years!

your comments on the wax ring with the funnel is spot-on. This is EXACTLY what happened to make a mess of my bathroom. The funnel sounds like a good idea, but it's totally a formula for trouble. BTW, I've got a 4x3 flange, and since I had to tear out the linoleum, I need a flange repair option to work with.

@@kmessenger93 There are several types of flanges and they break in different ways. There are several types of repair parts so the type of flange you have and the way it broke will dictate what type of repair part you need. A successful repair will hold the bolts tight so that you can tighten the toilet firmly to the flange. The flange also has to be attached to the floor. The top of the flange should be parallel to the floor and a little higher than the finished floor. Most guys put the wax ring on the toilet before installing but I put it on the flange. Get a couple of big straws and put them over the bolts to help you align the toilet over the bolts.

Thanks for taking the time to make this informative video. Our half bath has a couple of problems one of which is a broken flange. A couple of years ago I repaired the flange with that liquid steel you can mold. It seemed to work, but a bigger problem is the uneven floor. The prior owner put in a terra cotta floor, but somehow the tile sets uneven around the toilet. The tiles are cracked from cinching down the toilet. I suspect too much mastic was used on one side of the toilet. We are thinking of tearing out the floor and starting over. I found your video very interesting. I didn't realize how many types of flanges are out there. Thanks.

I appreciate the education I received here about flanges. Trying to replace a toilet seal and I discovered that the original cast iron seal is rusted bad, and abou a half-inch below floor level. Will check on getting an flange extension kit tomorrow.

Great info. I replaced one of our toilets yesterday. The flange looks like it has seen better days. It's a metal flange that is rotting away. For now it works. But at some point it needs replacing. I think will replace it with a PVC flange. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for your videos & this one reviewing flanges, they helped this homeowner complete a DIY repair of a leak from bottom of toilet base in house on slab. Problem was the solder joint broke on lead bend-to-brass flange allowing leak. My solution was your suggestion to remove flange by cutting lead bend/pipe flush with slab, smooth cut then insert 4-inch PVC Twist-n-Set flange into lead bend. In order to insert the new Twist-n-Set, I had to gently hammer back round some crimps in the lead avoiding tearing lead, in so doing was able to leave the rubber gasket. Like your instructions, I used 4-Tapcon 1/4 x 1 3/4 concrete anchors (required drill bit size listed on anchor packaging) to fasten flange to floor.

Hi Steven, Excellent video! My toilet was leaking and I thought this should be no problem just replace the wax ring only to find out the flange was cracked where the bolt holds the toilet down. I thought I might have to replace the whole flange until I came across your video showing the Gapper Repair Flange. This saved me a lot of time and effort to get the toilet working again. I bought a Perfect Seal ring and also a plastic flanged wax ring to replace my toilet just in case. But after watching this video, I am going to get a simple wax ring and save myself 10 bucks. I prefer something simple and effective recommended by experienced people like Steven than trying complicated and expensive technology.

This saved my ass! I thought I was in for some major repair issues but your info made it clear I had a couple of simple solutions. The metal flange on one side rusted out, other side is good. The subfloor is good so I could use a cabinet screw or one of the gabber repair flange. Thank you!

Thanks for your info. All good stuff, especially the wax ring info, didn't know of that issue. I need to replace mine and now I know to get a plain wax ring.

***** plain wax is the only way to go .. i have removes so many of the funnel waxes its really sad.most plumbers do not know .the problem with them ... water around toilet is the biggest complaint .

I love you !!! I`ve been in a plumbing nightmare for a year now. LOVE the accent (New York ?) (Jersey?) Most informative, beneficial help i have gotten . I had a house that 7 different plumbers told me I had to tear up the backyard cause a tree root had busted a pipe. After snaking every possible thing to snake, Finally snaking the garage where the water was originally overflowing from... FIXED !!! So, I don`t trust plumbers (not prejudice) don`t trust handymen, contractors, etc.... Now I`m in a townhouse built in the 70`s and OMG, I`ve had to gut, re-do everything. Only 840 sq. ft. and still working on it full time a year later. NOW, the toilet is flooding ( I say cause a lot of water) from base when i flush. I replaced the wax seal the bolts, washers, and valve.. Still leaking (flooding) as if I didn`t do nothing. So, my b.f. husband that`s a plumber told me to go buy some toilet shims and a wax ring without the rim, to double it up. Wish u were n Texas !
