Stevens Favorite Restoration Part 1- Annealing

I have a Stevens favorite that had the tang and the lever cut by an idiot. Anyway I welded and reshaped both pieces and I was wondering if it could be color cased and what something like that would cost. I put a Remington 511 barrel upside down on it and made an extractor out of mild steel and case hardened it with Kasenit. I also made new screws and a firing pin and made all new pins and tightened up the linkage. I plan on making custom sights and installing them and I already have the walnut I will make the buttstock and forend out of. But I don't have the experience or equipment to do the finishing, especially the color case hardening. And this gun is worthy of the kind of quality that you exhibit.

How did the mach2 work out for you? When I've tried the 17mach2 on a stevens favorite it had too much pressure and would open the breech block enough to let gases escape into your face. I didn't anneal or color case harden the receiver but that is the only difference from what you did here. Just curious if it actually worked out ok when you shot the gun.

I have made three of them now. It's important to either use a new extractor and cut it with the chamber or build up the old extractor and ream it with the chamber. If you don't, the case will bulge into the extractor slot and have a rupture. That is the only type of failure I have had with the Mach 2 in these. I try to find the favorites that have the internal screw that adjusts the lockup with the lever. they seem to do better.

@@Turnbullcustomguns that explains what happened. I never thought about needing to change the extractor. That is what was happening with the one I tried and scrapped the bulging at extractor slot. Thanks! Now I’ll have to try again!😂

I've heard you only need 600 degrees to anneal no ?

Steal can be from 800-1550 depending on the grade of steel. I have always annealed them at 1500 -1550.
