The Stevens House in Malibu is one of John Lautner's smaller and lesser known designs. Still I think that it is a stylish and orginal house, that deserves a closer look. It's owned by famous film actor Edward Norton and located on a private beach in Malibu, so visiting is not possible. Therefore I made this video with photos found on the internet and drawings of my own. Deidacted to John Lautner and to enjoy the beauty of his work

Thank you for your reaction! This stimulates me to on. Your reaction is exactly the reason I started this channel: I saw multiple pictures of house by John Lautner butI never could get a complete view of the layout of the houses. So I searched the internet to find pictures and drawings and reconstructed them. Now I share that knowledge with people who had the same interest as I had! Check my channel for more houses by John Lautner.

It's surprising this ingenious design isn't more well known. Lautner's visual intelligence is amazing. It gives a So-Cal inflection to high modernism.

Yes, I'm always surprised that John Lautner designs are not more well known because each of them is brilliant. That's also the reason why Istarted this channel to give the houses the attention they deserved. Hopefully my videos make John Lautner and his houses more well known.

I was lucky enough to see the house in the late 80’s. I owned a local business in Malibu and Mr Steven’s had me come by. I was dumbfounded when I entered. I had no idea it had a basement of all things!

The engineers should also be given some credit for these types of homes, architects dream up the concepts and the structural engineers make it work.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's definitely true. The engineers are the heroes of the architect, they shoud have more recognition. Unfortunately there's no much information about them, so I couldn't include it in the video.

2017 "After almost four years and an $11 million discount, the John Lautner-designed Stevens’ House in Malibu has finally sold. The buyer is none other than Academy Award nominated actor Edward Norton, who paid $11.8 million for the sculptural beach home. It was last listed for $13.75 million, but that’s nothing compared to the $22 million that the seller, Michael LeFetra, was hoping for when he listed the 3,366-square-foot split-level abode on the market in 2013. Sadly for LeFetra, who embarked on a “significant restoration” of the house, he didn’t even break even-he paid $13.8 million for the five-bedroom, five-bathroom abode in 2007. "
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 2 жыл бұрын
Okay interesting I didn't knew the prices of the house.... thanks! Real-estate is not always a good investment so it seems. Anyway I think that 11 million is still a bargain for a Lautner designed home in Malibu.

I think the concrete shell actually is really overbearing. What I think would have been better if you just used a X frame or an a-frame to keep the structure of sound because they don't need retaining walls either. The X frame would have been really good I think. Much simpler much cleaner. He's got some nice details but the concrete shell is too much in my opinion.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 10 ай бұрын
Yes, that's a matter of taste: other like the concrete roof because it looks like a wave or a seashell. From inside you have the feeling of living in a cave and looking to the ocean. The concrete also protects against strong winds and the burning sun. So its very practical.
@swoondrones
@swoondrones 10 ай бұрын
Did Lord not have to switch the concrete shell? Would it not have been better just to have one massive concrete shell from front to back without the split? That would allow more light to get in. That's split is very strange. You don't explain if that is necessary to keep the structure intact. As in you don't explain if the split is necessary to keep the structure intact
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 10 ай бұрын
To place the shell in two directions with a split in the middle, creates a window from where you can see the San jacinto mountains from the back in the house. From the other parts you create an opening from where you can see the ocean. With one shell from fron to back you could had the two openings. that looked to front/back from each position.

It really is an absolute gem! Your videos and virtual presentations of the houses are excellent, and so is your English, I just wanted to point out one little mistake that ocurrs in each of your videos, if I may: You keep using the word "spatial" where i think the word you're looking for is "spacious", to indicate that some structure, or building has a large internal volume. "Spatial" is "something of/or pertaining to space" (in general), "spacious" means having a much space (= "roomy"). Hope that made sense. Best wishes, please keep up the awesome work!

@@SuperJobbel Very cool! I definitely look forward to that video! I'm super happy I found your channel, I've been looking for resources and materials on Lautner's houses for a long time. Lautner and FLW are my absolutel favorite architects, and while I put Lautner on the number one spot, his work would never have come about without FLW's own. Both of them are absolute masters of creating spaces that are both human-sized and also breathtakingly monumental at the same time. Visiting their houses feels like a neverending adventure for the senses. Keep up the great work!
