Yeah..hate to break it to you but pretty much all his other "Something about" shorts all build into this thing here..there's a lot of little in jokes and references you just won't get if you don't watch a majority of them, like the fact that Mario is "Speedrunner Mario" and possessed by a Game Genie..which was a cheat device for NES and other consoles back in the day. Also, turn on close captions cause there are a lot of funny jokes hidden in them like when Luigi is exercising the Game Genie speed demon from Mario it's listed as "Holy Gibberish"..stuff like that..in pretty much all of the Something About series.

This Mario is addicted to speed running and has been said to be possessed by a speed demon (hence the exorcism scenes). He keeps using the reverse long jump speed up from Mario 64. He beat Super Mario Bros. 3 using a well-known wrong warp glitch. And so much of the beginning of this video ties together end of multiple previous videos. If you didn’t watch them, you probably won’t understand how it was all coming together.

One of the best little touches in this whole episode is that the M on Mario's hat turns in the the Majin M from DBZ. And yeah, as others have pointed out there are a lot of videos leading up to this one. I'd highly recommend them so you catch the in-jokes in there. It also helps to be aware of the whole weirdness that is the Mario 64 speedrun glitch thing, but it isn't truly necessary.
