Crazy to see these revelations from Kevin Smith, glad that he could get the help that he needed. I want to add a quick note here- at the end, the convo turns to "minimizing" things... I felt that, hugely. Two tours in Iraq, 20 years in the Army, loads of crazy shit in my childhood- I minimized it. It's a survival mechanism, big time. Lots of vets do it. It's easy, and in a lot of ways, it helps you hide it away as selflessness or bravado ("aww, shucks, I was just doing my job")- it's not. It's serious shit, and you have to deal with it, and you have to see it as significant first, so you can confront it and move past it. If you even think that you need help, you probably need help- so go get help. Love yourself so you can love others the right way.

@Mikel9999-vh3cbАй бұрын
I have no idea why this popped up in my KZbin feed, but it I am glad I did. Minimizing trauma, especially as a child is a fundamental coping mechanism we need in the here and now, but we need address these real traumas to keep us whole as we move on in life. Same goes for terrible things that may happen when we are adults. It is excruciatingly hard to discuss and let go of the guilt for things we did not cause, so I thank Kevin and Steve-O and crew for the bravery to talk about this ❤. That said, Kevin your commitment to your fashion style is commendable, but a little bit funny😂.

I recently found out that I have Complex PTSD stemming from childhood trauma from my parents chaotic marriage, the divorce and then living with a mother with undiagnosed bipolar disorder and her endless attempts to commit suicide. I had felt, for years, decades even, that there was 'something not right with me' but couldn't put my finger on it and it felt like a 'monster' swimming just under the surface of the water waiting to get me. Does finding out what's wrong with me make it any easier? Not really as I've got a lot of self diagnosis and care to continue with and it'll probably take decades to undo the knots in my life. I know that I don't walk alone as there's millions of us, who've suffered at the hands of others, but we made it this far so keep on going. Onwards and upwards!

I’ve listened to Kevin smith off an on for a long time. I respect the attempt at honesty and self-awareness that he’s acknowledged his “persona” vs. his real self. However, I think he’s clearly still having difficulty letting go of that need to be a “storyteller, monologuer,center of attention self deprecating self promoter.” Also I think Steve-O in the most respectful way possible is picking up on that by his facial expressions and allowance of someone else to ramble for 11 minutes without taking a breath on his podcast.

It’s a hard thing to get through and change. It was a good clip, and at the start of it, I see the Kevin that came out of therapy. I can also see the other persona step in a few minutes in and run with the story. And man, I get that. I do something similar and even when it’s happening, you sit there in your head yelling ‘oh my god, stop talking, what is going on’. It takes years and years of therapy, DBT and CBT to try and change what has been true for decades.

I still hesitate to talk about trauma. Everyone’s glares and judgements hurt almost as much as the pain itself. People like to act like they care, most don’t. They prefer to judge and marginalize for their own aggrandizement. The majority of people ‘want’ to see you succeed, but they ‘like’ to see you fail.

The need for "acceptance" is perhaps one the most damaging of natural human traits, and it is enforced by those around us from a very early age. Every child should be taught what judgementalism is and what it looks like to give them the best chance at being able to ignore the desire to change themselves for acceptance. Youthful bullying is almost exclusive in it's targeting of personal traits that the victim will feel unaccepted over, due the bullying itself(spoken as red head who was relentlessly bullied for my hair as an example). Never needed therapy for that because the all of the various hairdressers who cut my hair as a child universally declared their jealousy of my hair. They all wanted what I had. Then you realize that all of the bullying and lack of acceptance is in fact jealousy over a uniqueness you possess and they do not. Bullied for being a nerd, they're jealous of your intelligence. Bullied for being a geek they're jealous of your passion. Bullied for not copy pasting thier fashion, they're jealous of your independence. The personal strength you gain with realization is an absolute rudder in this storm called life.
