Actually, the novel is way, wayyyy darker. The rats are everywhere. They sing disturbing songs in Coraline's dreams and everything in the other world is organic and decaying. Also the tunnel to the other world is alive. It's an ancient being, far older than the Beldam.

The reason Coraline has such calm reactions to these bizarre scenes is because of her personality; She’s innocent and wants to explore, but is slightly skeptical. Ex: When she arrives in the alternate universe, she just wants to explore, when she sees something disturbing, she tries to hide her fear, when she’s told she’s in danger, she brushes it off and assumes she’s tough enough to fight the danger off!

When a cat brings their owner dead things it's taken as a show of affection. Wyborn getting excited about it (although from his tone it's more of sarcastic goofy excitement) comes from the fact that he knows what it means when a cat does that. Even though he doesn't consider the cat his he still appreciates the sentiment. I've known plenty of cat owners who get excited when their cat brings them a dead mouse or bird or things like that and they're clearly not serial killers or anything like that- I guess it's an Oregon thing to be excited about stuff like that. it's like getting excited when you call your dog's name for the first time and they come to you, or you teach them a new trick or if you own a dog that was bred for hunting and they get their first kill. Things like that show that your pet loves you or at least cares about you.
@ravenshirwood52015 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I feel like a lot of little things like this put him off when it’s really not all that strange. And I felt like he just didn’t like Wyborn at all.
@angelangelis83625 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think he was just playing that up for laughs. Wyborn is rather socially awkward and it can come off as creepy...I should know, I was/am like that myself, but you two have good points as well.
@ravenshirwood52015 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point too! My only problem is that if it’s being done for laughs, the joke is at Wyborn’s expense. What’s funny about calling a kid a future serial killer? About calling him a mistake? Saying that his parents called him Wyborn because they didn’t want him? Sure, he’s not real, but if he was, what would be funny about that? Nothing. It’s just mean-spirited.

I think you’re reviewing this too harshly. You’re holding it to the same standards as an adult film, and while it might be pretty horrific for a children’s film, that is what it is and should be reviewed as such.

I think her reactions are accurate. The movie clearly makes it out like Coraline is not like other "ordinary" girls. She is a little weird, quirky and at times mean spirited, so her not really being phased by all the weird stuff and warnings seems in character for her. She is spirited but also has a sort of edge to her, so she just blows it off like its no big deal or all just hoax warnings and "tall tales".

Even though some of Corallines choices might be odd or don’t make sense, remember this is a kid who is bored out of her mind, has parents that are always busy or won’t help, and is feeling slightly rebellious because she’s still mad they made her move away from her friends. Most if not all of her reactions and choices make sense, sure if your older and watching this you would be like “why would you go through that tunnel” but as kids who don’t know everything like red flags and much more, her choices make a lot of sense and as a kid who grew up exactly like Coralline (I mean have parents who were always busy and just weren’t there when I needed help, moving away from all my friends to a old house and etc) I would of done the exact things she would of and had very similar reactions.

heres a little story: when school was ending, i had civics class, and since we didn’t have work we decided to watch this film, it was a very entertaining film although we had to end the film when Caroline was talking to the other mother about hide and seek (the scene that i think is close to the ending of the movie) but when that scene (1:05) came up we were shocked and we told the teacher to skip that part, i never EVER expected that kind of a scene to be in a kids film.
