I just realized I've had my Sanbourn 60G compressor for about 15 years! I change the oil and drain it frequently. These days it only gets used for airing up tires and painting. The odd air tool here and there, but not much anymore. That new Makita compressor of yours is nice. Very quiet too, especially compared to the oilless one. I'm really impressed with how well it handles the nail gun and recovers quick. You wasted 37 nails lol

HAHAHA , oilless units requires hearing muffs their far too loud for me. Most have switched to cordless electric tools but my air tools are all over 35 years old.

@@SteveRobReviews my air tools are around that old too. I've got to admit I haven't used them in several years. I've gotten a lot of cordless tools and they really do everything I need and there not only cordless but hoseless too. The original compressor I used was oil and probably 40 years old when it died. The second one was oil less. I hated the noise.😎

Hi Lloyd It's so easy to pick a compressor not suited for one's needs unless you know all the specs . I had a buddy buy a larger cheap oilless unit , he put a 100 foot cheap ass extention cord on it instead of a longer air line and burnt it out the first day HAHAHA. He had no idea about voltage drop or took the time to read the manual.

Perfectly concise. I had no idea about the mechanics of an air compressor. I want to run a HPLM paint sprayer. I now have to look for the psi requirements of that tool. The 50% duty requirement might slow me down a bit. Thanks Steve!
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 10 ай бұрын
The spray gun will have the required specs so you just get a compressor that meets the specs in cfm , psi and duty time as you select the size of tank to store the air between fillups. A bit of math but easily done ✔️

Best air compressor info I’ve seen. I wanted a compressor adequate for most of my DIY projects, but didn't want a huge or super expensive compressor. I've used a crappy cheap small compressor for about 10 years, but it's kinda useless with impacts and ratchets. It was super loud and constantly running to keep up. The Mikita Mac700 really does look like the best solution and value for most DIYers. I will be getting one for myself. So glad I saw your video.

Great video subject, Steve! I have a 26 year old Bostitch oil lubericated pancake compressor. I used it originally to build my house. Today I use it for my nail guns and filling up tires. Excellent video Steve. I will want to buy the Makita MAC700. I did a lot of research, and wanted mostly durability, and price wasn't critical. I do not like the oil-less, unless it's critical care like a hospital, which is another whole separate area of discussion. My only concern was sump oil migrating in the air discharge. I may want to put an in-line oil trap/separator on the output line, unless there's one with it. I will use mine solely for filling up my Jeep Wrangler tires, tires on one mountain bike and tires on one racing bike, that's it. Also, this is quite a unit for the price, a great value.

Hi Peter I use this extensively and so far its flawless . I have not noticed any oil in the air line at all. The recovery rate is incredible for its size and it starts mid winter at -25 in my shop no problem . Cheers 👍

@Dave-ei7kk 7 ай бұрын
You really shouldn’t need a coalescing oil separating filter for your application. But your point about oil mist in the output air is a good one. The oil less compressors are better if you’re going to use a a paint spray gun like an airbrush or even a small automotive style high pressure spray gun. Otherwise, yes, you should have a filter for this style of compressor, especially if you’re using water based paints.

Fine job site air compressor. But.. Even a die grinder is 4.4 CFM@ 90PSI. Our paint HVLP spray guns are around 12CFM @28 PSI. So anyone watching don't think you can paint a car or attempt to run a blast cabinet. Our compressor is 80 gallon 5HP 15.8 CFM @ 90psi and 100% duty cycle. Still will not sand blast well.

I bought this compressor about 6 years ago. It gets intermittent use out of my house garage as a nailer or blowing up tires. Certainly would be considered light use. Sadly, the failure point for me wasn't the compressor motor or electronics, it was the air outlet from the controller. I was changing the outlet just a few weeks ago and after installation of the new air connector I couldn't get a seal. I've tried teflon tape and pipe dope and a combination of the two and nothing will give an airtight seal. So the answer would be to buy a new controller but that would cost over $200 to get it from Japan. So, while I love this compressor, it certainly isn't without it's flaws. Would I buy another one? Probably yes because there isn't much out there that can compete with it.

Can you do a comparison between air tools and their accompanying electric versions? Why use air, with all of its complexity and variations if you can use electric tools? I'm referring to 110V versus battery packs. Great video though, I learned alot.
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 9 ай бұрын
Most of the air tools are much cheaper and last longer than cordless electric versions. Corded electric is on par with many air tools. There is no match in electric to many air tools like die grinders , rivet pullers or impact wrenches . Cheers 👍

A year or so ago I picked up a little 1 gallon Metabo HPT (formerly Hitachi) from Lowes because it is oil free, small (25 pounds) and QUIET (59db, below conversation level). It's a nice little compressor and perfect for blowing the dust bunnies out of computers, topping up the air in my well pressure tank, and similar little tasks where I either don't want to run a hose from the big compressor or carry the stuff out to the garage. Are you going to keep the tank from your old compressor? Makes a good portable air tank or to add capacity to your other compressors.

The bigger the better for compressors. If you live somewhere where you need portability, that’s one thing. I was able to find a 60g for $200 on Craig List. It needed a new pressure switch. I see Steve had an Astro Pneumatic Big Nasty. That takes lots of air. At first I was running hose all over to where I needed it. That was a pain. Then I saw shop air line kits. They were expensive and inflexible. It was suggested that I make a system out of black pipe. Then I’d need a threader. I noticed that PEX is rated for 160 psi. It’s easy to work with and has held up well. I don’t mean to be contrary to what Steve says about not buying way more than really needed. I’m just saying that if you can get a good deal and maybe put some TLC, then as your needs increase, you won’t be sold short and have to get something bigger.
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian Going bigger is fine as long as you have the space and the electrical supply. I seem to make out fine for what I do, so I match the compressor to my needs . Cheers 👍

@@SteveRobReviews As I said, I wasn’t trying to be contradicting. A small portable is fine for many applications. My point was that if you think that you’ll eventually be using high consumption tools like Big Nasty, then finding a old high capacity compressor might save having to trade up later. I’m also saying that getting into something big doesn’t have to break the bank. It’s just an alternative if someone needs the capacity.
