I read about this case in a book called Swift Justice by Harry Farrell several years ago. Excellent book. As I recall, it was a popular crime during the Depression era to kidnap the relatives of the wealthy. When this favorite son of San Jose was murdered, the citizens just snapped. It is said to be the last lynching in California. Tragic story.

What a sad story. Unfortunately, when a victim is raised in a wealthy Family, the chances of kidnapping is a real fear. Thank You for sharing this story and his gravesite. It’s nice when you share the stories about victims of violence, so that they can be remembered. Oftentimes, their story comes out in the paper and then they’re forgotten. This way, they are remembered and in cases a prayer 🙏 is said for them. Brooke was born in the same year as my Father, so He would have been 110 years old this year. I pray for Him and wish Him a Happy Birthday. Blessings to You and Jim.

You know, every time I feel sorry for myself because I'm in a lot of chronic pain at 66, or just life's problems, I see something like this that is so tragic and I realize I should keep my trap shut and realize how lucky I am. American cemeteries are quite beautiful. Here, in Australia, where I live, cemeteries are rather oldie worldie. I’m not complaining, I like older style cemeteries but, I must say American graveyards seem way more peaceful, more serene. Didn’t know the story, but I agree with your statement that this incident illustrates the stupidity of vigilante mobs.

I work at a cemetery in Washington state, we are all reminded every day that the care of our ancestors and for the recent death that grace and mercy are most important, if it gives them peace at worst part of their lives, it's the least I can do to give it my best every day, in fact my grandparents 2 uncles and my aunt is intured where I work so I took the job with love for them in my heart

1933 was the year my mother was born, but living up here in Oregon it seems I had heard about the kidnapping & murder, it sounds familiar to me. But then again, I’ve read a lot of true crime books, including almost every one that Ann Rule wrote. Especially seeing a picture of Ted Bundy & reading her book about, I realized I was stationed at McChord AFB outside Tacoma when he was active in the area & I’m pretty sure I had met him at some point.

The second story is about the Hart kidnapping and murder. The one and only time I've ever been to Oak Hill cemetery was for a friend's mom about three years ago. There are a few books written about this incident. One is, "Swift justiice: Murder and Vengeance in a California Town". It's a very well written documentation of the kidnapping and the lynching. The kidnappers claimed that Brook Hart was struggling to get away and they hit him over the head to stop him, not actually meaning to kill him. When they realized he was dead, they dumped the body and attempted to get the ransom anyway. Governor Rolph was partly responsible because he encouraged the lynching and vowed to pardon anyone involved. He also refused a National Guard request from the Sheriff to secure the county jail. As the crowd was breaking into the jail, the Sheriff called the San Francisco Police Dept for assistance. They sent numerous officers to help but the lynching had taken place by the time they arrived.
