One gig many years ago, our drummer was having issues with his hihat. Every time he'd hit it the stand would just collapse with a loud "kachang" sound. He'd be scrambling around trying to play and reset the hihat every few minutes. He was going mad but the rest of us were laughing our asses off. He got so mad we had a major band fight after the gig, he quit, the singer hit our lone roadie who then flattened the singer, the bass player stormed off in a huff.... band dissolved. Good days lol.

In 1970or 71, at 12 or 13vyears old my guitar strap came off and my guitar fell face down while playing live. That was before strap locks were available. On another ocassion our lead singer forgot his mic. at home. On a third live play our rythym guitarist had a battery failure on his guitar and no spare battery, we had to delay our start time so he could go to the store to get a new one. Then there's outdoor concerts, last summer we had three called off due to rain two hours before the show, I wonder how many will be called off this summer? Another time playing outdoors at the start of the show the wind kicked up, the sky went dark, picknick umbrellas we flying, then all but around 25 of our audience evacuated, just in time for the sun to come out again. Here's another, I just walked onstage around four year's ago to see our guitarists prized guitar fall off it's stand, it's headstock snap just after the nut, good thing he brought a spare!!! When you play live anything can happen, you litterally need to have two of everything as a spare. These are just a few of the many problems we ran into playin live.

Honestly the smaller audiences are more intimidating than the large crowds. You can actually note the facial features on every person in the crowd at that point so it amplifies the terror factor, plus shows that small increase the likelihood of you interacting with the crowd in a meaningful way either before, during, or after the show.

I was playing "Living On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi with my band. I had my lead guitar player barely plugged in a Marshall Amp. When the solo starts, He walked to the front of the stage to have the audience have a better look at the solo playing. But doing that, He pulled the jack and disconnect the guitar with the amp. And so, when he was playing the solo, He wasn't even plugged. And to make it even worse, after the solo he looked at the sound guy telling him to plug the guitar back into the amp. But instead of doing that, he asked him "Where do I plug this?" It was bad, man

I also reminded myself that most of the audience were drunk teens, and that they were not in a right mind set. That only happens once tho. Another time, I had to do a full song, and ran out of total breath at the end of it. I was literally gasping for breath by the time the song was done. I was playing a festival and wasn’t on until the last two songs. I couldn’t make it for the soundcheck, but I’d played these songs a few dozen times. I finally get onstage and my in ear monitors are dead. Fine, I just stand near the floor monitor. Second song the singer decides to change the intro, but I can’t hear what’s going on. I look at the other guitarist and realize I’m playing the wrong part. I look out and see how big the crowd is, and I froze for a few seconds. Bass player looks at me, yells a chord, and I get right back into the song like nothing happened.

My biggest problem live is when my hands decide to stay in the dressing room. I was in a cover band and we were playing Detroit Rock City. I had to do Ace's solo part in the middle of the song, ya know, when it's just him playing, then the other guitar comes in for the harmony. It's not hard at all and I played it no problem in practice but as soon as it was an all eyes on me scenario, my hands wouldn't work. It was so embarrassing, all I could do was laugh.

My worst time playing live was when a country band called me on stage to play lead for them in a private party, at the host’s request. Motherfuckers hand me a hollowbody guitar connected to a fender amp, for playing the gucking lead. And me, being the metal/hard rock girl that I am, I was scared shitless, and I froze big time. Until a couple of bars in, I heard in Obi Wan’s voice inside my head “Use the blues scale”, and I played something kinda “decent”, kinda... The audience and band told me it was a good solo, but from my point of view I played like if Nick Jonas and lil Wayne had a baby, looking at the video it was also kinda decent too. Knowing that, never again, I’m not playing another clean lead in my life, at least not in a genre I played literally once in my life (that ocasion I was talking about)

If you had FUN- it was definitely a plus. But it seems like you may not have had fun, so you should learn- NEVER go to a party where they may hand you a hollow body guitar thru a Fender amp! lmao. I'm giving you a hard time, cuz I have no idea what Nick Jonas is and don't think Lil Wayne was around when I was ........ well, anything. Seriously, if the crowd is having a good time, it's probably worth it. If YOU'RE having a good time, it's DEFINITELY worth it! I really miss playing live. That being said, I’ve had some very “interesting” experiences on stage. My band played a Halloween party at a local bar one year. My costume was Brittany Spears (good choice for a 200 Lb dude). Halfway into the night as the crowd was getting rowdy, one of our friends came up on stage to dance around, and decided to cop a feel. In the middle of playing a song (I don’t remember what tune it was) I was groped in places I didn’t know I had. I kept my composure and kept playing, but the emotional scars still linger. Also, at another gig our vocalist at the time decided to get up on the bar during a song (gotta love wireless mics). When he got back to the stage his head was bleeding. While he was up there the industrial sized ceiling fan got him. He survived and finished the gig.

Seeing your reasons to not play live, which I can accept, but hearing that you might still consider it, might I offer some suggestions? 1. Go to an open mic night at a local bar or something. (no fat stage crashers, no throwing things, no big crowds to trigger anxiety) 2. Clear the stage of everything but your guitar and amp. (no bad sound guys, no chairs to step on, nothing to trip over) 3. Plant you feet firmly to the ground and do not move them for the duration of your set. (again no tripping) 4. Don't look at the people, look at your guitar. (all they may see is your bald spot, but it keeps you from seeing the more-than-ten-people crowd) 5. Don't talk. (no stroke-things) 6. Improvise your solos. (no guitar-related strokes or memory-lapses) Whether this is actually looked at or liked by Stevie T (or as I like to call him, Ol' Rubberlips), it might also help other live-performance-anxiety people. Have a nice day, and thank you for reading my comment.

Here’s some things that happened to me live while I was performing (in one show): 1: drummer forgets to end song 2: singer forgot the lyrics 3: guitarist breaks string live and has to use a crappy Indiana guitar

It is the exact opposite for me, to an extent. I have anxiety in front of people, and always get really nervous. But playing in front of a large crowd was actually ok sort of, because they were just blurry as we thrashed through our set. I could only really see the front row in between headbanging and breaks in songs. It was basically just a big sea of blurry people, and that didn't bother me as much as having to give an oral report in front of 15 classmates. NOW THAT, almost paralyzed me with fear. And I never like playing in a room for like 5 friends or whatever, when my wife says "oh he can play guitar! Come on play something for them". I never do. I hate it. But I love an actual show. I guess the adrenaline helps also. No adrenaline sitting in a room with 5 people just to show them you can play something

One time when I was playing live I stopped the whole song and the band had to stop as well and start over again all because I forgot to put my guitar in drop D 🤣 it was my first time playing live in a while because I also have anxiety and don't really play in front of many people besides on videos. So when that happened my anxiety was horrible

So glad you mentioned the generalized anxiety disorder. I'm a lifelong sufferer, along with quite a few family members. I feel like people who have it, do have very different lives from people who don't. I do not feel that this necessarily means we have less of a quality of life, just that we live our lives in ways that can seem somewhat depressing to people without the disorder. For instance, I haven't been to SEE a live show in over a decade, because of my anxiety. I love the fact that I can see live shows on my TV screen, and enjoy it to the fullest. To some of my friends, this seems lonely, but it's how I am comfortable. I still love it! It's something that isn't talked about enough, but it really helps when someone well-known brings up the topic.

This guy is a riot!😜😜 I was playing on the Rock Legends cruise upon the main outdoor stage. The wind was blowing so hard that recliner lounge chairs were launching into the air and landing on stage and crowd. Hard to play..look cool when chairs are flying and stage is yawing left and right.

I was in a band for a couple years. Agree with you about sound guys - I constantly butted heads with ours, usually over how loud my amp was. As for crowds, I never played for more than a few hundred. But I spent most of the time staring at either my fret hand or my pedals. And dealing with various personalities in the band made playing guitar a lot less fun as time wore on. After I left, I literally didn't even pick up any of my guitars for around two years.
