simply hyphenating one's name isn't what causes a relationship to be unbalanced. The initial subject was about her last name, yet so much other stuff seems to be an issue. this isn't about a name.

I agree with both Dr. Phil and Steve Harvey! They do not need to get married at this time. They both are about themselves. Like Dr. Phil said please do not lie to the man just to get married. I liked his concept on emotional integrity. I am the same way. I told my husband the truth. So many women do this just to get the ring. It is best to be honest and let him decide whether he wants to take it further or go their own seperate ways.

I'm so glad Dr. Phil caught that the young man kept saying "my"- MY house, MY kids, MY food. Honestly a maid, a nanny, & a chef can take care of all those things for him. She wants a more equal marriage w/ them sharing the responsibility for something they would share together. I see why she is resistant to what he wants because it seems like his plans doesn't include her 50/50 but more of him owning her in a way. I agree with Steve and Dr. Phil, their values don't match enough for them to wed.

Dr. Phil hit the nail on the head in many ways, by saying that I want you to be home to cook my meals, raise MY kids and clean MY house then you can see that he doesn't see their marriage as a true partnership. This may work beautifully for a woman who wants nothing more than to be a traditional wife however, be cognizant that people change, grow and evolve over time and those needs may change. His comment about "playing independent" as long as you come home and do what I just stipulated would be a source of contention for Brittney in the long run when you consider her specified needs. I agree with Dr. Phil and Steve Harvey

good advice. these "small discussions" will turn into nuclear war if they cant find middle ground that they are both pleased and satisfied with before walking down the aisle. and sometimes you just have to swallow the big pill of admitting "you were a great bf/gf but you wont be a great husband/wife to me"
@lovedichoreo15299 жыл бұрын
Wow, I think Loren has a clear sense of what he wants in a traditional marriage as does Brittney (in a marriage that has a blending of both traditional and non traditional roles) however those needs and desires may not necessarily match up. I honestly feel as though their differences are clearly defined, can these two really compromise on things they feel very strongly about?
@MrsClasdeArce11 жыл бұрын
I come from a culture where women do not take their husbands last name. The way it is viewed is that it is not about the name. The persons involved know they are married and act as such and respect each other. Still in many marriages the roles are very defined. Personally I have been married for almost 15 years. My husband and I have a Christian marriage. We are very connected spiritually and although I have asked him about changing my last name or even adding his, he is opposed to it.

What I'm hearing is I want this I want that from both of them that's the problem. They're both in a relationship they're supposed to talk these things out together so they can both be happy in the end with what they want. Communication is key if you don't have that then don't waste your time
@meika8589 жыл бұрын
that's true. but they already knew how each other was for a year without just now seeing it. people get into relationships thinking it will change a person into being what they need and want. but you already see how they are if you pay attention and stop ignoring the signs, you'll see so much and not waste even a month on an individual because you'll see from jump y'all aren't compatible.

+MissSweatpants I I'm married and am a working mom of 2. I can tell you: it's exhausting, not always glamorous. Many times things don't work like you planned. A lot of guilty feelings you have to learn how to ditch to the side in order to remain sane. But yes, it's worth it if that is what you want. Especially when the husband supports that.
@AshU-ug2fy9 жыл бұрын
+MissSweatpants Sadly, the others are right, you can';t do it all. Something somewhere is going to fall flat as you try to juggle them all but you aren't focusing on one task. Think of those comedy events on TV where the main character tries to juggle being in two places at once and managing both, it normally goes well for a little while, then ends in disaster. If you are working, who is taking care of the kids? The school? A friend? A family member? By the time you get home you'll be tired, I doubt you'll feel like cooking and cleaning. Take a bit of time to think about these things or it could get messy. Somethings got to give. :/

As a whole they seem not to be compatible, but as for the name I don't think it is a big deal. This might be because I was married at 29 and I had established more than say a 23 year old but I am hyphenated, but our son has my husband's name solely. We are both perfectly content with it. It was not me being disrespectful nor is not being proud of my husband it is simply a name I spent much time developing and crafting, it is my father's name but he and I have no bond. I responded to is last name as easily as someone saying my maiden name. If something as small as a name change is and issue I agree with Steve, staying in the dating zone.
@pennydimedime9 жыл бұрын
hmm... neutral woman on the panel perhaps? i think it falls nothing short of ridiculous to expect one adult to compensate for two because of their gender. . . how is gender relevant to having to cook? or having to care for the children more? it's a partnership in my eyes that requires mutual respect and understanding of the other individual. I'd like to keep my name because it's me. I like it. and any issue with that is supremely egotistic.

@MrsClasdeArce11 жыл бұрын
Continuing with my previous comment. In the culture that my husband and I come from it is not about carrying a last name but about being committed to each other. I have seen many US marriages where after all is said and done the wife is unfaithful to her husband. So it is not about a name it is about commitment. How sacred are your marriage vows to you? How serious were you when you made them. My husband and I have more than a physical bond, it is a spiritual bond. God is the center of it all.

It's funny to me when I see women who refuse or hesitate to take their husband's last name before/during marriage, but will not refuse or hesitate to take at least 50% of their husband's past, present and future income in the form alimony and/or child support after divorce. And, even during marriage, they don't hesitate to spend their man's money left, right and center. Women are independent enough to reject their husband's last name, but not independent enough to reject a share of his income!

This thing of woman taking a man's last name is old fashion. To me it follows the same concept of a woman should be submissive to her husband-Submissive in...you know what I mean. So I object it and will never do it. In other words, I will never submit to a man. No! No way! Not by taking his last name or other things....except when I want to submit in the bedroom and bedroom only. I do not submit anywhere else...And certainly not by taking his last name...No! Not in my book! No.

i believe a woman should take her husbands last name. and personally im a traditionalist. the so called modern woman to me seems likea woman that doesnt want to commit to a relationship. as far as needing two incomes to make it work. i dont believe that. if the man is willing to do what it takes to support his family then there is no need for a second income. besides which. the fewer workers there are the higher thier pay is. supply and demand. if every household was single income then there would be no need at all for dual income.
@thehelmethead48839 жыл бұрын
+scratch I don't know about the one income thing but I have to agree on you about the traditionalism. When ever I meet a women who says that she will not by any means take up her guys last name, it's just totally unattractive to me, It just shows me that this girl is SO wrapped up in her individuality that it makes me wonder if she would even love me if I was dating her.

No i wouldnt. And im sorry but a father is not more important than a husband. When you marry two things together you turn them into one thing that is greater than eother was alone. The same with people. When you marry them they become one unit that is more than either could be alone. Changing her last name is a symbol of that union. She is a part of her husband. And her husband is a part of her. Why is this a bad thing.
@scratch51209 жыл бұрын
You will see in time. Your husband will be more important to you. Your fathrr is your past. Your husband your future.
