To prevent lumps in your grits carefully whisk any lumps out. Once the grits is almost done add the cheese of your choice. I like creamy grits so I add a little evaporated milk.
@IndigenousIndianLady65

I don't end up with lump by bringing the water to a boil take the pot of the eye of the stove then pour in the grits while stirring until it thickens a little then put it back on the eye and bring the fire down and let it cook til done .... add what you want....

I use parsley, onion powder, garlic and butter in my boiling water, then I add in the grits. During the cooking process almost toward the end I put whatever cheese I'm gonna use from gouda, pepper jack, habanero jack cheese, etc. They turn out delicious everytime 😋😋

Instead of water use chicken broth and towards the end right before you put your cheese in put a little heavy cream let it cook about 5 more minutes then throw your cheese in.

GeekBella. IKR. Steve likes anything because he can't cook. Anyone who knows how to cook grits knows you're supposed to put your seasoning, cheese, and butter into the water before you add the grits. And you can also cook them in low sodium broth instead of just water.But if you have a good seasoned broth on the shrimp you can put that on top of plain unseasoned grits.

Where I'm from (Caribbean/Barbados) grits are not common but since living here I've learnt how to make them. But I've never seen anyone add the cheese to it while it still has all that water going on. Also, don't you add some salt and a dash of pepper to it as well? And those shrimp didn't look seasoned to me 😕😕

Grits should be whisked into the boiling water. then add butter and salt turn the burner down low and cover stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. stir in the cheese after cooking while the grits are hot. that's a no fail grits recipe.

I wouldn't know where to go in Charleston except I had a great brunch at one of the hotels on Market St and they had awesome shrimp and grits. Magnolias as well.

Folks outside of the south do not understand the humble grits. They cook'em in water and then just try to eat them that way... they are no good that way. You have to add lots of love to those grits. Momma would cook them and then she'd add the butter when they were getting nice and thick, then she would put in a dash of garlic powder and sometimes she'd add a bit of cheddar cheese... if she had some leftover bacon from the day before she'd crumble that up in them. You can dress grits up a hundred different ways. That goodness of those stone ground corn kernels is nothing but DELICIOUS! Don't forget to salt and pepper generously... and I don't care what you serve 'em with... they are soul satisfying :)

Gwendolyn Higgs Hi. I rinse them by placing the desired amount of grits in a bowl, allowing the water to cover them, pouring it off, and repeating until it clears. I do the same with rice. It's to wash off the excess starch and chemical buildup from processing that can be removed. That's why I do it. I hope this helps.

It had no seasoning. It was really strange to see food that looked so good but had no taste or flavor at all. It was a trick. There is not good southern food at The Pink Teacup. It was like my taste buds had died and all the food that I put in my mouth tasted like hot water.
