Awesome video! Just what I needed! Got to change cables and use this for the first time. Thank you Sir!

@7:15 the newer ones have a button at the base of the throttle/shift lever that you hold in to prevent the gear shift when you push the lever forward. Instead of two levers, you now have one lever and a button. I have no idea how it works mechanically. I didn't even know how the old style control worked until I saw your video. This is all quite similar to the way the power lever in a Cirrus airplane is set up to control both the throttle and the propeller governor at the same time. Mercury beat them to the punch by three decades.

Why would mine lock in forward and not move? It won't go back into neutral or reverse. Would it be the cables? I disassembled mine. Still the issue just haven't replaced cable yet

I have the mercontrol with red or orange decals. It has a lot play in it and only allows the boat to get up to 32mph. It runs and idles good nor does it bog down. I feel like the cables need adjusted or there's a problem inside the mercontrol. What should I start with?

I do believe there are two pins in this along with a spring that goes on the cable inside

I measured the detent if you ever need another one, it measures 5/16 (width) by 9/32 (height) hopes this helps in the future!

Rebuilding 1970 800 Mercury. Just fired it up today. Throttle cable needs replacement. Mercontrol is definitely fun getting back together. Still... 10 years of Mercruiser... much easier. My key is dash mounted. Choke wire had mysteriously disappeared. I may dash mount a choke switch too at some point.

The fact that that switch pin was getting 12 volts all the time is most likely why that pin corroded away, for example, leaving your battery in the boat, (at least in salt water) you get corrosion around the terminals due to the power being there all the time.

I have this mercontrol. My issue is that the throttle revs up but the heat doesn't engage into gear untill after I'm past full rev forward on throttle. 😭

First thing I would do is with the motor off, have someone move the lever while you watch the linkages inside the motor to determine they are moving correctly. That should tell you if its an issue with the mercontrol or the engine.

@@stevewatr after watching your video and seeing you talk about the one lever being for increasing rpm well idling for (warming up the engine) I realized that it wouldn't be possible for that to increase the rpm if the shifter cables was hooked to that side! I switched the cables and it works perfect!!! Just fired up the 40hp mercury 402 and she shifts like a dream! 🤟 Thanks for the video and response ✊

Sorry, not off hand, but they have exploded parts digrams for these on iboats and other mercury online parts dealers

Why don't you get a riding lawnmower or other implement switch and put in there?

Put the warm up throttle in the back position to show what it looks like when it is not on high throttle. Your explanation is confusing.

The warm up lever pointing straight up is about right on mind
