SRV one of the greats. Another great guitar joined him in the heavens this past Monday January 20 2025 the world got the news that John James Sykes passed away from cancer at the age of 65. The most criminally underrated rock guitar player ever. He will be missed by many that know of him.

Frank Marino could imitate Hendrix very well. He said when he was on tour years ago back when he had Leber Krebs as his manager he would go talk to other band members being he was a headliner act and SRV was one of those bands that were going to play before Frank Marino & Mohagany Rush were to come on & Frank said hi to him & he said that SRV wouldn't even look him in the eyes or did he say anything to Frank at all & basically ignored him which to me made SRV an ignorant ass wipe . Myself I think he was over rated and I've got his music and he really didn't have much music content or was I impressed with most of his music compared to what Frank Marino & Mohagany Rush had did. As far as blues guitarist 1 of my favorite is Robin Trower who I've met a few times and got to shake his hand and ask him questions about where he was going after the concert I had just seen of him & he said he was going to the blues fest in Canada . He signed my shirt and ticket stubs on both occasions and gave me some guitar picks all of which I still have today . Super nice person & absolutely not like most musicians are where they act stuck up and I'm better than you are . I found out about him when he was the guitarist from Procol Harem back in the 60s & still listen to his latest music . He had surgery not long ago and was saying he might retire but he's now playing & making more music again but there was no mention of what type of surgery or what was wrong with him . I also got to meet Ricky Medlock from Black foot twice and got to talk to him in his tent at a outdoor concert many years ago and got to buy a him some booze drinks while the band was taking a break and he was a really nice as well not stuck up at all . I also got to meet the bass player from Twisted Sister and the bass player from Stepping Wolf so I consider myself to be pretty lucky to have been able to do this for basically free & before they pass away because a lot of people don't get this chance unless they pay for back stage passes which now days can cost thousands of dollars. If you want to hear a killer guitar solo listen to the 1978 Frank Marino & Mohagany Rush live album & look for Electric Reflections of war on it . There's a few songs on it that were done by other rockers that he does one that was done by Jimi Hendrix known as Purple haze and he knocks it right out of the park with his rendition of it .

Seen SRV 5 times in Detroit. One of my favorites. I credit Ted Nugent for sparking my interest in blues music. In 1977 at Cobo Ted was tearing it up as usual and right in the middle of one of his songs he dead stopped and went into this really heavy blues melody that blew my mind. I’ll never forget that moment although it only lasted about 30 seconds then he picked up where he left off on the song he was playing. I’ve seen LOTS of concerts in Detroit and the two bands that were guaranteed to be awesome and sometimes full of surprises were Ted Nugent and also The J. Giels Band. They left Cobo in a shambles. They always did extra encores for the rabid audience. I seen SRV with Jeff Beck at Cobo one time and that was a really good show. PorkChopPete Detroit/Livonia, Michigan

She passed last year a few days before my 17th, played Texas Flood at her funeral. She thought ol Ted was a little too wild but loved the music.

Uncle Ted is at the top of my list of favorite guitarists. I think Ted is under-rated/left out of the "greats" discussion too often. People dwell on his hunting/politics more than his musical ability....But I have to say, SRV is my all-time favorite guitarist, no question. I mean, how can you watch/listen to SRV and not have your mind blown?!!!

When SRV hit the scene back in the 80s I was in full blown AWE.The man was such a natural talent-everything he put out was absolute fucking gold. We were all so lucky to be blessed with him and so many others in that time. The world has gone to complete music shit over the past few decades but I know I saw the best of the best during my youth and I’m grateful for it immensely. Ted was a big part of it too-thank you sir…

We need the whole song. I feel lucky that I got to see SRV in concert at Alpine Valley, WI one year before the helicopter crash took him. He was freakin' phenomenal. Imagine what he and Jimi Hendrix would have been like as musicians today had we not lost them. I don't like helicopters. They can end up being a wind storm within a wind storm, especially in a boxed canyon. So, what can we do to help today's young people not be such worthless POS? Their self esteems are low. They lack skills because technology is doing everything for them and their brain plasticity has radically digressed. This is only going to get insurmountably worse with AI. You see SRV using the technology of the time, but the technology is still very manual and skill oriented. And there's no getting out of having to increase creative brain pathways. I say that everyone should talk to young people and beckon them to get off the damned devices and get them involved in manual skills. Please help me name the manual skills that you learned as a young person from the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. Everything really went to $hit after that. I'll start: ice skating, horsemanship, kite flying, model trains and cars, painting, drawing, writing, playing an instrument (no autotune or the like), cooking, sewing, dog training, firearm skills, hunting,.... Help me here.
