Your reaction corresponds with what I've always thought--SRV's singing gets overshadowed by his guitar playing, obviously, but he had a good smoky voice that was perfect for the genre. And he wrote a lot of his own songs, and the lyrics are worth listening to. I had a friend from high school who was actually in drug rehab with him, before he was famous, and from what she told me, his songs came from deep down. That what he brings; it's not just his musical genius, it's that he really puts his whole being into it. You can feel it when he plays. (note: while we're admiring that smooth guitar changeover when the string broke, let's also give a hand to the savvy stage hand who was right there and knew exactly what to do. Kudos, Mr. Stage Hand.)

Russell Reeves doesn’t seem scary that he would get better after getting clean. Seems like it makes sense

Stevie grew up in the Dallas area & later moved to Austin. His older brother Jimmie was already an established local blues bad-man in the region. He was lead guitarist for The Fabulous Thunderbirds - They had hit songs like "Tuff Enuff" & "Wrap it Up." Check those two songs out if you get a chance. All of SRV & Double Trouble is Phenomenal though! You can't miss with Stevie. Sadly, soon after he passed, a record they'd just finished was released ~ one month after Stevie's death. It's called Vaughan Brothers "Family Style," of course it was a beautiful album, full of soul and love. The last SRV Album I consider a true stand alone album rather than a "Greatest Hits" type this is called SRV & Double Trouble "The Sky is Crying." The only song Stevie was recorded playing slide on is on there, it's called "Boot Hill" and if you can listen to that haunting, smoking slide solo of his without getting goosebumps....Well, you're made of stone.

Stevie was also a generous performer, who credited his band - like when he said "GO Reese Wynans" - and then pointed at his keyboardist (who is astounding!) -Oh, yeah - and breaking a string was so normal, that SRV's crew were ready - if you listened to this without the video, you would never notice a broken string or guitar switch - just as on audio only on El Mocambo or other live songs, you'd never realize he had switched behind his back... lol
