I’ve never seen anyone break down his technique so well

Your playing, teaching and content is killing it. When I watch your own stuff I see an artist who has his own thing, super musical and worth listening to. But,... you are so good at digging into the details of sounding like other players (which I find strange, like pretending to be someone else, but apparently essential for musical development). Much props for finding your own voice whilst being so good at understanding other people's playing, I haven't seen anyone else accomplish this.

I mean strange personally - I don't think it's a bad thing, just weird for me personally.

I love videos on picking techniques - I held my pick with my thumb, index, and middle fingers for the first 20+ years of my guitar journey, but I wanted to up my hybrid picking game and had to force myself to learn how to grip the pick with just my thumb and index. It was an extremely hard habit to break, and now I'm intrigued by other people's picking techniques. I feel like it's an often overlooked aspect of guitar technique. Cool video, thanks!

Spot on. It took me years to figure I gravitate towards the confident short phrasing sound of gypsy style picking and Stevie was definitely that style of picker.

Good tips! Don't care about sounding like Stevie, I think there are more than a few guitarists who have that covered. Still, I came away inspired to focus on a new picking technique. fwiw - I absolutely loved SRV and was lucky enough to see play him three times.

great analysis you nailed it. no one talks about this stuff in videos because it doesn't get views. i've gone through so many different approaches to picking, trying to figure out if i can reach a new plateau. it'd be interesting to survey some other non standard approaches. metheny is an interesting one.

You got it man...He used fat strings so that he could hit them harder, because the string dont wable as much as the thin ones.

So much of his sound is in that "slap". (Btw, you ever delve into Charlie Christian's playing? He still sounds so fresh to me.) To be clear, the wrist is loose, and the forearm moves (shakes?) it. Right? Will take some getting used to but I can hear that killer sound in what you're doing here.

Alright I gotta ask, what gauge guitar pick are you using here? Looks like a Dunlop 1.5mm. Not that it really matters. But ya know, us mortals want to try our best, too.
