He never drops a note. His technical ability was so acute that he would channel the music through his soul and into his hands without thinking about where his hands were and what they were doing.

Yall probably wondered what was going on when Stevie started the really uptempo run on Little Wing, but that was just Stevie. He had constant ideas flowering during solos and Whipper (drums) and Tommy (bass) just held on for dear life and went with him wherever he went. They were just that tight.

This entire show was outrageous. Stevie was high and drunk out of his ever lasting mind, and STILL managed to play this well. And, my favorite part of this video is at 5:00 when he pulls off this absolutely monstrous lick, and surprises even himself! He looks over to his bassist, Tommy Shannon, and smiles like, "Did you hear that?"

He lost his place in the chord progression on that run, I dont think it was an expression of impressive guitar playing, it was an expression of impressive "getting back to the correct beat right at the last moment".

He looks pretty normal during this show. Stank face he just does naturally like all passionate guitarists. If you really want to see him stoned out of his mind check Voodoo child at the cotton club.

The rumor is he was passed out before this show started and they could not wake him up. He started this show late because of that fact. And, of course he had the white to get going which explains in part his profuse sweating during shows. He said in interviews that he used the strongest guitar strings made because he often could not feel his fingers from being so high. Once he became clean he lowered the strength of his strings because he could feel his fingers. I saw him before he cleaned up and he was phenomenal. I was at his last two shows at Alpine Valley and he played like a God. It is so sad that after battling his demons he was taken from this World by fog, a ski hill, and that damn helicopter.

I think we're all kind of on the same page here. To me, he surprised himself by getting back to the chorus while still being able to play that riff. But, different perspectives and all that.

donaldthescottishtwin (DTST) he's drunk/stoned out of his mind there. The Japan show, earlier in that same year was probably even worse. Tommy Shannon said they smuggled their own stuff into the country and were obliterated every single day and night while they were there. The 15 minute Lenny/Riviera Paradise is the perfect example. He was absolutely fried! But he was pretty lost here though, too. Go watch Lenny and before he even starts playing, look how badly he's swaying while talking into the mic. Thank goodness he got cleaned up. The performance at the Orpheum Theatre, just a month before he went into rehab is still scary to watch!

Yes, this performance was before he was sober. Stevie's sobriety date was October 13, 1986, when he took his last drink on a flight from London to Atlanta to enter rehab. He didn't drink or use drugs after that date, joining the Aquarius Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous in Dallas upon his return. He chose to relocate from Austin to Dallas to (1) be closer to his mother Martha, and (2) to put some distance between his old boozing and drugging locales in Austin.

To answer your question. No. He wasn't sober at this time. The bass player said that before they went on stage there at the El Macombo . That Stevie was backstage catatonic just out of it. So much so they didn't know if they could go on. I don't know if you've seen the movie snatch. But the character mickey was about to go in for a big fight. But he was in the locker room just hammered from the night before. And they was having to slap him in the face and all just to rouse him. Stevie was this way before El Macombo. But somehow comes out of it goes out on stage and just kills it. Probably the best performance of Texas flood I've ever heard him do. That totally tripped me out to find out he was in that condition and still played at a level even professionals can't reach. He was something else so much more than just a guitarist. He was an entity.

I love Stevie, but think of what it was like to be his rhythm section and have to look at each other and ask, " OK what are we gonna put to that?" He was the man, but he shared the the stage with 2 other great men and he would be the first to say that. Hell, he made sure that they all three got equal pay for everything they did together and that is almost unheard of when someone is so clearly the so called "Front Man". SRV was special in many ways beyond his guitar playing abilities. RIP SRV

This was before sobriety. He is very pale and sweating profusely but his playing was always next level. He said after sobriety, which he embraced and celebrated, that he went from playing 13 gauge strings down to 11's. He said sobriety felt like he took his boxing gloves off and he could feel his fingers again! He played so cleanly and perfectly no one could ever hear those "boxing gloves"!

Even more impressive when you realize that in order to get that rich, deep signature sound of his, his used a particularly thick gauge of strings. Whereas your usual guitarist is using .009s or .010s, he was using .013s.

There may have been guitarists who were more technical, faster etc than Stevie. He is for me among the men who people can say there was somebody better but when you hear him play you say nah...there isn't better player. The same could be said though about guys like David Gilmour, Clapton, Ritchie Blackmoore and Jimmy Paige. The thing about Stevie he could do what he did and be absolutely wasted on stage but every note he hit was precise. Stevie was also as humble as anybody could be. He just wanted to play the music he loved and when asked if he thought of himself as great he would brush it off and give all the credit to his brother as being the better guitarist.

Lil Ms Nat, Stevie is the best when you compare videos of the two and keep open mind going into it becomes quite obvious. SRV was so humble as a person he would never consider or say something like I'm the best, he thought his brother Jimmy was better and looked up to him. Jimmie Hendrix also said he wasn't the best so hard to go by what the performers says about themselves, imagine how it would come across if one actually did call themselves the greatest player in the world.
