I disagree. Talent is a natural gift. Yes, you'll need to practice to develop the gift, but talent is something that can't be taught.

"What is talent? Talent is nothing more than a pursued interest. In other words, things that you're interested in, you'll spend a lot more time working at, than something you're not interested in. So that's all talent is." Bob Ross

That’s not talent though, it’s skill. Talent is a natural aptitude for performing or learning a skill Talent yields nothing without ambition and work Skill can be learned without talent Mr. Ross clearly has both

@@ronswoleman2245 Agreed. His strange definition here of talent always bothers me-- saying that if a person practices a lot then she/he will become talented at something. It doesn't work that way. A pursued interest is like a hobby, it's not talent. Talent is an innate and extraordinary knack, a gift one is born with; a person might be destined to become a figure skater, pro basketball player, chef, cartoonist, writer, or violinist, and they have an uncanny ability and affinity for it (that most others do not). It comes naturally to them. Might be genetic, might be a cosmic blessing. But it's rather amazing. And it's not merely a pursued interest. Maybe Bob meant to say that even if you've got talent you still need to hone it, to practice, to spend time on it.

Yes and no. You can have a keen interest in something and still be a complete novice with the your attempts to duplicate a process. I think "talent" is the perfection of your pursuits. I use the word "perfection" loosely. I do believe we are always learning and our own worst critique so we are always in the pursuit of perfection and never reach perfection. Perfection of a talent is merely a state of mind meaning you have reached a point in your pursuit that others will admire or recognize.

If Bob could only see the magnitude of the legacy he left behind, It’s honestly beautiful. I’m sure he never dreamed that he would have impacted so many lives. I’m not a painter, or an artist, I’m just an “appreciator” so to speak. Bob has taught me not to paint, but to appreciate. Be humble and calm. Let it flow.

Watching this video fills me with joy, sadness, awe, and hope. Watching him create beauty out of nothing, and enjoy every second of it… and when he bangs his brush back and forth on the stand and chuckles and says “that’s still fun”.. that tells me this is a man who has everything figured out… we are nothing compared to him. The vision this man has for composition is unbelievable. He says it's easy but believe me folks, it is not. Before he puts the first stroke on the canvas he has a clear vision of exactly what is going to go where and in the order in which he will do so. This is phenomenal talent vision and foresight. He's a miracle.

I met you Bob...just a year or two before you died of a broken heart from losing your beloved wife. Anyway I was far from my Louisiana home with my husband who was stationed there at Wright Patt. I was big pregnant and always loud....I said to my husband and friends “There’s The Painter Man”. “I’m gonna say hi! You looked so tired and you had eaten alone....I should leave you alone ,they said....Sooooo I stood up big and proudly yelled....HAPPY PAINTING!!! You rushed right over with a Hugh smile that seamed to come all the way up from your toes! Gave me the biggest hug and profusely thanked ME...me...for making his day. I will forever keep this beautiful memory close to my heart....if the chance comes to pass on love...do it. Oh this was at a Cracker Barrel somewhere in Ohio.

I used to watch Bob when my kids were little, I’m 58 now, and there are so many elements to his videos. Serenity - his voice and insights are so peaceful Talent - his talent silences my mind so I’m not all over the place. I’m naturally focused. Teaching - he is a true teacher and his advice and techniques are awe inspiring. The bottom line for me is that I am watching someone who truly enjoys what he is doing, and he is sharing it with everyone. An interesting concept to say the least. I have to admit though that since I found out that Bob passed away, it brings me back to reality in a way that never happened when he was alive. I guess it makes me a little sad to know that he is no longer with us here on earth. Nonetheless I still enjoy his show and it still tames the savage beast in me

Central Scrutinizer let me give you a little more detail. maybe you won't miss it this time. when i was in middle school there was a kid that had a passion for music. he not only had a passion for music but for musical instruments as well. he was natural talent. he could use an instrument and completely know how to play it in very little time. he also wrote music, and his favorite instrument was the guitar, and he was flawless when he played it. the point is, of course a person can be taught certain skills and with practice become better. however, not many people can play an instrument with profound proficiency within a couple of days without any kind of past experience or training. you don't have that ability, i don't have that ability and neither did any other kid in that class. i still seldom see him. i have especially seen this with guns. that is talent. it is almost like these people had the basic knowledge of these items downloaded into their heads and all was needed was a little practice to hone abilities that they already had (natural talent).

Bob was about 45 in this video. He was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force and served from 1961-1981, starting at age 19. He would be 77 now in 2019. It is sad that within 10 years of this video, he was gone. In 1995, he passed from Lymphoma, after having been diagnosed in 1994. He was married to Vivian from 1965-77 when they divorced. He had his son Steve with her and Steve was his only child. He then married Jane in 1977 the same year of his divorce from Vivian. Jane died 15 years later in 1992. He married Lynda in 1995, two months before he died. Most upsetting of all was how much he was made fun of by so many people during his life, because of his looks (hair) and "isms" ("happy little trees"). I don't know if he knew he was made fun of or mocked. I don't think people meant any harm. Not like they do today. Yet even with the cruelty, he never allowed it to be known that he was dying. It wasn't until after he was gone that the world as we know it would realize the true legend known as Robert Norman Ross. He isn't forgotten though, and never will be. If you look and see, 99% of the comments speak to our dear friend as if he is still here with us. Til we see you in heaven, Bob, "God bless".

@@notdrunkjustdrifting5103 Thank you, I didn't know some of that! I remember staying up late as a young child and watching him paint. Looking back now I think he had a significant role in myself wanting to be an artist, and I started doing art at an extremely young age. I was born in 1992 and i'm now 28. I still watch him and feel just as much happiness, and also a whole new sense of respect for him and his personality, now that i'm an adult. What an amazingly sweet, soft soul. I never saw anything to make fun of him though, even back then. I just thought he was...incredible. I hope he knows what he has left behind. Lots of young artists; aspiring to be like Bob Ross.

18:20 "and at home, when you have unlimited time, you can take a lot more time and effort with this and really go into some detail..." You can see he's basically saying people can't be drawn in this super fast style, and that's why he never did. You need to take your time to draw people. Also the cowboy didn't really come out very good in this. I wonder what it looks like in the reference painting offscreen that he always did in advance.

Go straight for the canvus .... only way to get over your fear of making a mistake. Oils are very forgiving.... Sometimes I start out with a landscape and end up with a full scale floral arrangement. I love painting flowers. I never plan what I am going to do... I just start and get ideas as I go.... that is the joy of it. Self taught this method....went on to teach it.

I’m sure Bob would have said - in fact, I think I’ve heard him say, “Well, I can’t draw a straight line either. That’s why my little trees are always kind of crooked. We’re all a little different. Nobody’s perfect, but it’s those little imperfections that make us beautiful. So I just let my lines be a little crooked. I’m sure the trees don’t mind. In fact, I think they’re happier that way.”
