And as for the configuration, all pics I've ever seen from the 80s seem to show him playing 8x12 and 9x13 toms over his kick drum, with any smaller toms to the left. This kit features an 8x10, and 9x12 over the kick, which is stylistically popular from a much later era (90s/00s). So I'm really not sure where the tech is coming from with that statement.
@uzielis15 жыл бұрын
I remember Stewart's early 80s set up were 8x10, 8x12, 9x13, and a 16" floor tom. Included were his ever-faithful tightly tuned snappy snare, a 14x22 kick, and very long Octobans. Tama sounded good then, they sound good now. Cymbals by PAISTE, sticks - back then - by Regal Tip. He uses VATER now. Keep rockin', Stew.

An exact copy of the 1983 kit, with the exception of the 8 inch tom, which is missing from this new kit. These drums have different heads from what were on the 1983 kit. In 83 they had coated Ambassador heads.

@PanekPL There is a police song, I don't remember the name, where the ENTIRE groove is moved one quarter note to the right, and so everything sounds really funky because the backbeat and downbeats are in the wrong place, same with the cymbal accents and such, every single bit of the song sounds strange and builds this weird backwards suspense.

@cdcgb1 That doesn't sound right. Effects work on incoming sound. Triggers send an electronic pulse to a sound module. A trigger hooked directly to an effects box would render no sound.

Stewart Copeland is notorious for being "ahead of the beat" which really drives the music and as he says is "right of the beat." A good example of the opposite is questlove's drumming style on D'angelo's Voodoo album. He plays behind the beat and sits back quite a bit. And Stewart is right cause now Questlove is famous too.

My biggest complaint about Stewarts tone these recent years is the drum heads he uses nowadays. In the 80's and 90's he still used coated remo ambassadors on all the toms, tuned really tightly. He's using diplomat heads which may last longer but you sacrifice some tone.

A question: So many drummers these days place their rack toms on cymbal stands instead of placing them on a mount on top of the bass drum itself? Does the tube which penetrate the bass drum shell make such a difference on the sound?
@seamusloyd9 жыл бұрын
AllisterCooper2008 not a significant amount of difference. For me it was 2 parts practicality 1 parts look. I can get my toms into the exact positions I want them in off cymbal stands. You are limited to some degree mounting off bass drum. Also easier to move on and off stage in smaller chunks. And lastly i kinda prefer the cleaner look in front of toms and bass drum. Everyone will have their own reasons though.
@AllisterCooper20089 жыл бұрын
Thank you, seamusloyd. Personally, were I to mount say 2 toms, I'd prefer to have a rack. I'm still debating whether to have one or two mounted toms :).

@huberthunterdon925111 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the tech got the idea that this kit/configuration was a "copy" of his Police kit from the 80s. For one thing, this kit has Starclassic Maple shells, which are basically the thinnest maple shells on the market now, and weren't even introduced until around 1994. That is also a lacquer finish. In the 80s, he famously played Imperialstars, which back then were 9-ply mahogany drums, with a painted coating, and were typically in wrap finishes.
@larkydozer14 жыл бұрын
It's a copy of the 1983 kit, but the tom tom heads are a different style. Rather than coated ambassadors, these are thicker, uncoated heads.

@maartenvdheuvel14 жыл бұрын
@aliont OK, I'll bite: he suggests instead of playing the first beat of your standard rhythm on count 1 of the bar, start your first (accented) note on count 4 of the previous bar. Like he - more or less - shifted the main accent not on 1 but on count 2 (on 3, actually). To the right, as it were. Well, that's what *he* implies was the root of his success, anyway. Jokingly, of course.

The bubinga really looks cooler, but the sound difference is slight. You could probably hear it when litsening carefully to the drums on their own, but in a band context the difference is negligible.

@symboitesRul315 жыл бұрын
IDK what's going on, but if someone is criticizing Stewart you're either trying to mess with people, or just dumb. He's known as a master of synchopation world wide, bringing reggae drumming into main stream music, and knowing almost every little musical technique. He's not a drummer, he's a rhythmatist master.
@Tubes12AX7k13 жыл бұрын
As I recall, Stewart is actually a lefty, and I wonder to what degree that affects his drumming. Same for being left or right footed. I imagine his high hat work was influenced by that.
