Afaik it's better to current limit the power supply to something quite low (like 20mA) when testing LEDs, the actual voltage they need depends on the colour and other things. So if it's current limited you cannot kill them by setting a too high voltage.... You could then just set the voltage to 4 or something and the power supply should "tell" you what they actually need. :) 1V is too low in any case, probably 3-ish.
@StezStixFixАй бұрын
That makes sense! Thank you 😊

Check the leg length of the LED (if it has not been cut...) The longer leg is the positive side (anode). Sometimes the LED's have an indent or a flat side this is the cathode (negative).. you can also see what is the negative and positive side by looking at the LED itself. (If it has been cut and has no indent or flat side....) It usually has a large and a small metal part inside the "bulb"... The larger part is the cathode (Negative). LED's work like diodes (hence they always have about the same symbol in electrical schematics an LED has 2 arrows extra to show it's emitting light) that send most electrical signals just in 1 direction... so swapping polarity does not harm them. The leg length is not always a true answer... because of how they are made in cheap factories though.

Steve you could probably get away with putting any old NPN/PNP transistors (2TY's are PNP transistors) into 7 segment display as they're only really used to multiplex the display by turning that portion of the display on. As a side note if you ever encounter dead segments it'll more likely be either an issue with the display itself or the input for that particular segment.

BTW Steve: Your multimeter wasn't able to show you the voltage when testing the voltage because multimeters are kinda slow with all of their autoranging functionality. There is a way to keep it in a certain range so it better indicates the voltage, but most people probably don't even know it exists. Also, non-professional grade voltmeters might not have the sampling rate to properly display quickly changing voltages.

Usually those kind of LEDs have a lighting-up threshold at around 1.8V to 2.2V, depending on the colour. A quick and easy way of testing them, is to use a common coin cell battery, like a CR2016, CR2025, or CR2032. Because since those coin cells aren't able to put out enough amps to fry them, you can just use them directly without putting any limiting resistor in between. Another thing is that, since LEDs really are diodes, you can also test them using the diode-tester in your multimeter, or one of those Arduino based component tester thingies.
@Okurka.Ай бұрын
White/blue ones have a higher threshold than 2.2V.
