Nice! A bit of a tip on fixing cut cables I picked up somewhere. You don't cut both of the smaller cables in parallel but offset instead, so your heatshrinks won't be piled up together but one after the other, resulting in a much less bulkier fix in the cable radius. If you have room for it, that is.
@ajspice
@ajspice Жыл бұрын
Fuckin' genius! I'm stealing this idea.
@MyRegardsToTheDodo
@MyRegardsToTheDodo Жыл бұрын
I personally would have removed the damaged part of the cable from the mainboard, fiddled the good part through the protector and then soldered that to the mainboard. No heatshrink needed at all and considering the damaged part of the cable was so close to the protector, nobody would have noticed 5 or 10 centimeters missing.
@MisterZealot
@MisterZealot Жыл бұрын
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo putting aside that it sounds like a lot of work 😋, most protectors are fused to the cable. Aren't they?
@MyRegardsToTheDodo
@MyRegardsToTheDodo Жыл бұрын
@@MisterZealot No, normally they aren't, I've done that to a few older controllers, the cable breaking shortly before the protector is an extremely common problem with OG Xbox controllers for example. And it's really not much more work than what was shown in the video, I mean you have to strip the wires anyways to fuse them together with lead, but you'll also have to use quite a few pieces of heatshrinking tube.
@MisterZealot

When ever you splice multi-conductor cable, always stagger the splices by the length of each splice. That way the total thickness will be the thickness of the original cable plus one splice. It will barely be bigger than the cable originally was.

Awesome video as always sir. The vinegar used to remove the corrosion is great. Please remember to wash the vinegar (acid) off with a bath of water and baking soda to properly nutralize the acid. Then use the 99.9% alcohol. I restore lots of Tomy robots and other retro electrinics and I paid the penalty for not neutralizing the acid residue fully on a few projects I did when I started the hobby. Anyways, love the personality and content you provide. Thanks again.

I usually loosen up that kind of strain relief with hot air, then it would be a matter of pulling the cable in to hide the fix, or resolder it internally, on a case by case basis.

usually those types of strain reliefs you can desolder the cable from the board, pull the cable through the relief, cut out the damage and then feed the healthy cable back through and resolder to the board for a cleaner repair.

You should clean out the vinegar with a lot of water if possible. The acid is able to eat away the chrome coating of the contacts. To prevent this it should be neutralized somehow as soon as it did its job.

Steve, one thing I like to do when soldering wires like that is to form hooks in the braided wire (and the shield) then use the hooks to give both sides support. Just folding the wire onto itself for a little bit will make a decent hook and then they can be hooked on the other wire and "handshake" a bit. Twisting them together helps after they're hooked together, as well, then solder and cover with the shrink tubing. Anyways, thx for the video!

Ohh, Steve... I would just rinse the vinegar and only THEN clean it with alcohol. You need to dilute that strong vinegar, in fact, baking soda+water is the best to neutralize vinegar. I suggest you cut the bad video cable part and pull the cable inside the unit and no one will know it was repaired. Patching the wire looks kinda gross. You can pull out the old piece of wire from the strain relief and use it again easily.
