STI 6 Speed Swap Into Subaru Legacy Outback Part 2

In this video, I continue with the STI 6 Speed swap into my 2005 Subaru Outback XT. I installed the new ACT Twin Disc clutch and the 2007 Sti 6 speed and took it for a test drive.

hey man, saw your parking brake boot. you happen to remember where you got that? the structural portion of mine (the plastic housing) is cracked and oem is so hard to find.

What did you end up doing for the shift boot? The one for the 5MT Outback is attached to the shift knob and doesn't have that ability to separate from the shift knob to allow the 6-speed transmission's reverse lockout thing to go up and down. I would think that the shape of the base of the shift boot would be different between the Impreza and /Legacy/Outback chassis, so I'm not sure if there's something that will drop right in to fit this exact swap. Thoughts?

The boot does separate from the shift knob, you just have to pull hard. I just removed the hard plastic piece that connects the boot to the shift knob. It just sits under my reverse lock out. Doesn't look bad. If you want something that works as it should you can buy a legacy gt spec b shift boot

Did you kept your stock driveshaft for this swap? I'm trying to do the same swap in my outback and my biggest concern is wich driveshaft will fit

So for the outback your best driveshaft option wold be to get a driveshaft from an outback with the 4eat automatic transmission. Also take the flange off your r160 diff and put it on your r180 diff. The 4eat driveshaft will be the correct length and will bolt up withe the flange swap which is easy.

Would this work on the non-turbo version? I have an 06 Outback 2.5i 5-speed.

Everything should work the same on the non turbo version. There would not really be a need to upgrade to a sti 6 speed because you shouldn't be exceeding the power rating of the 5 speed. A much cheaper upgrade would be to upgrade to a turbo 5 speed as they are a bit stronger than the NA version.

There is a version of a jdm 5 speed with the dccd but they are pretty rare and probably cost as much as a 6 speed. Sti 6 speed is probably the cheapest way to get a dccd if that's your main goal. Also look into split case 6 speeds. It's the same design as the 5 speed with an extra gear and they are quite a bit cheaper than the sti 6 speed since they are not as strong. I am not sure if there are dccd options for that transmission or not

Hey, I have an 05 lgt and I have the exact same whine when I'm accelerating but I can't figure out what it is.

If your hearing the whine in this video it is probably the center differential. This is a brand new sti 6 speed with 0 miles so I don't think you need to be concerned about the noise on your vehicle if a brand new transmission is making the same noise. Hope that helps

Did you swap out some harness from the old trans to the new 1? The DCCD install is gonna be a PITA from what I heard. Regardless, be painfully detailed when you wire in the DCCD. How much was the 6 spd? I'm thinking about selling the 1 I have and either getting a brand new 1 or putting all new internals in it, whichever's more practical. Oh, I put the toe lock bolts in and I guess they work, thanks.

The harness for the 6 speed is what came with the new trans, I got an I wire dccd kit which comes with a 6 speed to 5 speed harness adapter. The dccd controler was actually very easy, almost plug and play. The 6 speed brand new is 7k which is probably cheaper than replacing internals.

@@SWSpeedCo idk if I asked you, but what's the transmission code for you 6 speed; does it have the helical or platted front dif and why did you chose that 1?Did you consider the MAP dccd controller before you choose the iWire controller, if so why did you chose it instead?

The transmission code is TY856WW8MD. It has the helical front differential. The reson I chose that transmission is because it was cheaper then the earlier and later models and was apparently the best design for going fast. If you want to slide the care the open center differential is better with the 30 70 split. I did consider the map dccd because it is cheaper but I ended up choosing the Iwire dccd pro because it was the more plug and play than the map and it allowed me to use the sti oem switches which you can't do with the map dccd

How does the twin disk feel?

It drives like a stock clutch which I think Is very impressive. I haven't figured out how to launch it without burning it yet so I need to work on that haha

@@SWSpeedCo That's honestly great to hear. Did you have an 06 wrx style flywheel/clutch setup before the twin? I have an obxt as well, and I'm looking into doing the single mass conversion while I have the engine out for a reseal in the future.

Yeah I had a wrx spec stage 2+ clutch and act lightweight flywheel. Not the best drivability but it was a bit better for drag racing than the current twin disc because of the more aggressive material.
