appreciate the effort and thought in putting this video together. it fleshed out what is involved with these types of builds and how a reputable builder would be thinking through a client request(or how someone would hope a reputable builder is thinking through their request). Also appreciated the confirmation on consulting. Once i landed on a builder(i'm in the Northeast), i was wondering if requesting a consulting session is something that is or can be done to talk through a potential build(for a cost) and if those cost could go toward eventual build. While every shop may be different, it was good to see this is not an uncommon practice. If I may make a recommendation, it would be a great to see a follow up video reviewing what a customer should look for and be prepared to discuss when "interviewing' potential builders and what they should be prepared for(a consulting fee...shops worked hard for that knowledge). An educated customer, is a happy customer and a good customer. Thank you again for this vid. great stuff...it's unfortunate MotoIQ is a bit of a drive for me.

Super heavy clutches also put extra wear upon the firewall and other parts that interact with the clutch, like clutch fork, pedal box. I know this because I had a stage 2 cermetallic three puck clutch, worst idea ever. I broke some weld points on my firewall, cracked the torque tube on the pedal box assembly, bent my clutch fork, popped the slave and master clutch cylinder on my 2010 WRX. I think the only good thing to come from that was I learned how to install a dash, and clutch system into the car, along with some added bracing.
@motoiq3 жыл бұрын
Not to mention your crank thrust bearing.
@DontStopReeling3 жыл бұрын
I've read thats why you match it to the power you are making, any extra grip ends up breaking stuff way faster. I'd also go as far as saying those platforms are crap too, I know 3 guys with 4 blown motors between them. One guy's brand new oem replacement from Subaru developed rod knock breaking it on on the freeway on the way back from the dealer.
@HondaWagovan3 жыл бұрын
@@DontStopReeling Yes you match your clutch to the torque you are making but when your power requirements require a very high effort clutch is will put lots of stress on the above parts of the clutch system I mentions and the thrust bearings. You will need to upgrade all of the above and add bracing to your firewall unless you like your firewall popping and making all sort of unpleasant sounds. And most people that make moderate gains often ignore all the supporting clutch upgrades. I learned this lesson the hard way and preach not making much power unless you can afford the other parts.

Funny thing about the "undercuts" on the floater disc is......it literally may just be the easiest way to machine the ears onto the disc when the end mill (tool used for side cutting in maching) cuts the ears, so that there's no interference from any chamfers between the floater and the flywheel. Usually the "undercuts" are called "Mickey Mouse ears".

When focusing more on track use for a build, there are better options IMHO. Although it's not intended for street used and a bit more expensive, I've been running Exedy twin plate clutch and flywheels on my 400hp SR20 swapped 510, and my brother's 700hp R32 GT-R with very positive results. They're not particularly heavy, and with it's short throw response it may requires more attention to rev matching, but once you get used to it, shifting is far less effort and much quicker. In all consideration for the intended use, it's not ideal for easy street bombing, but on the track, it's definitely better for faster lap times.
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. One thing about EJ engine when running stock ECU's is that low inertia clutch and flywheels cause P300 codes to get tripped. Not an issue with standalones but if you are stock, accessport or ecutek tuned it's a hassle. This clutch in my option is the best street/track clutch for higher powered EJ's.
