Stick Control has become a standard exercise for DCI drumlines. To learn the basics of marching snare drum you need to learn some fundamentals, some technique and some tried and tested exercises. In this lesson I will teach you how to play exercises from the book "Stick Control By George Lawrence Stone".

My great great grandfather was George L. Stone! Stick control is definitely one of the best rudimental books for snare drumming!

@@FreestyleRudiments Yeah it is, my grandfather used to get lessons from him. We still get residuals from the book sales. I have one of his old drums in my closet at home. Followed the same path as him and I’m playing quints at my college!!

Definitely the bible of sticking patterns. I worked out of this in high school. This book should be in every drummer's arsenal. Thanks for sharing.

My favorite part is when you said, "sometimes you might play it like this sometimes you might play it like that. Depends on what they are going for." Sage advice.

One of the better STONE approach videos I’ve seen. Well presented without a lot of fluff. I’ve worked on all three of the books and have to say Accents and Rebounds is my favorite. I have it stuck in my head of a friend who cut up a copy of the stone exercises and shuffled them about to make new patterns for new ideas. A great drumset book, dbl bass drum, all around chops builder. It’s a skeleton waiting for the meat. Keep up the good work.

Float taught from this book. The 16th diddle transition exercise comes from it, and and the 16th accent and 16th/32nd transitions exercises are based on it. He used the same concept for triplets and accented singles. Basically the whole concept of the grid originated with Float teaching from this book. The idea of reps 4-2-1 taken as being the grid today is a short form of what the grid really is. I have pages of Tom's exercises laid out like Stick Control that give all the combinations of accents, drags and flams with idea of play bar one (check) and alternate through subsequent bars - for the whole freaking page. And he did it all on a typewriter.

That's awesome to learn. He was a early pioneer of the drumlines we see today and really revolutionised that activity didn't he. you could put that stuff online, I bet people would love to see it!

I prefer to use the old books as well, it seems they are more in-depth explanatory. The Gene Krupa method is one of my favorites, and his introductory pages are way ahead of that time period..
