Billiards regional three-time champion here, regarding Dan’s comment about having a penalty occur when missing the 8-ball, he is partly correct, however the penalty is not what he infers. If a player fails to hit the 8-ball while shooting at it, it is a foul and the game continues. Also, one should keep in mind that when the 8-ball is the legal object ball, a scratch or foul is not a loss of game if the 8-ball is not pocketed or jumped off the table.

"Billiards" refers to any sort of game with a table ball and stick, be this style of game is called "Pool" so All games of Pool are Billiards, but not all games of Billards is pool.

Michael C. Pool is another name for Pocket billiards. There are a couple versions of billiards, but pool means specifically pocket billiards

Snooker has red balls you need to pot before potting one of the coloured balls, points awarded for each colour differently. Once all the red balls are gone you pot the colours. There is no way this could be mistaken for snooker.

Arin makes a good observation, and it made me realize something: pool/billiards is one of the most ASMR-triggering games you can play. Nothing but low-frequency rolling sounds mixed with percussive clacking. My wife and I have played this on 51 Clubhouse Games almost every night since it launched, a few quick rounds of pool before bed, simply because it's so calming and low-stress.

This gave me nice memories of playing pool at my grandparents house. They had a full size pool table in the basement in the house they built in '49. My granddaddy was the one who taught me how to use a pool cue and how to play 8-ball. If I didn't have a shot lined up, he'd stealthily move a ball in front of a pocket when I wasn't looking and would call my attention to it. He'd bet quarters on each round and we'd use those quarters for snacks when we went fishing. He passed away in 2006 and Grandma passed away in 2018.

Billiards is the pocketless version in the UK, with striped colourings for numbers above 8. But Pool in the UK is a mix of yellow and red balls instead of these numbered ones. Rule-wise, genuinely identical.

Pool is always billiards, billiards isn't always pool. Pool refers to billiards games that use pockets. Much like how all apes are monkeys (no, that's not incorrect, apes are, in fact, monkeys; that annoying friend of yours who keeps calling chimps and orangutans "monkey" is right, they are monkeys), but not all monkeys are apes, or how all lions are cats, but not all cats are lions.

In 8 ball pool, you have to hit 3 rails whith any ball(s) when you're breaking so that the balls are spread out enough to work with, but every subsequent shot after just has to hit one rail or sink into a pocket. Honestly I'm pretty surprised with the shots they're making, the middle pockets are hard to hit from a distance.
