I was very fortunate to have Laotian friends settle in the small town in Iowa where I grew up. The food and the people are absolutely incredible!! I have since moved away from my town and it's always fun when I go to a local Asian market and buy all of the items most non-asian people have no idea to buy. Many times, the store owners will ask me how I know what to buy, I say I have many Laotian friends growing up and they always smile.

We first refuged in Thailand and ended up residing in Kansas back in 84. My siblings and parents connected with a generous and helpful Lao family at our first place called home in a apartment that we lived at. Small world that he’s from there as well! Wichita still has a decent Vietnamese community there too!

Great job Eater! This new series and its host is fantastic. And right on the heels of Dining on a Dime too! Pelin and Lucas would make an AMAZING show together - but then the internet would probably implode from the awesome. Also, I do not know the context of the statement, but you can hear that lovely old mother murmur "My God, I love you!" at around 3:40. I'd like to think it as a reaction to a person (and a crew) being kind, funny, and respectful to a culture and a family. Keep pumping out the great content you guys! Much love from the Philippines.

I'm sorry but I just cringe when people, especially Lao, say "Lay-Ocean." We are called Lao or "Kone Lao" if you want be super accurate. Aside from that this has to be by FAR the absolute best Lao restaurant I've ever seen. I'm really impressed. I am also happy to see that we are slowly but surely and respectfully separating from our neighbor named Thai. Lao and Thai can be a family but that doesn't mean we (Lao people) can't have our own success and identity.

Laotian food much more spicy then Thai food. Also they have a darker flavor than Thai. I prefer Laos food over Thai for these reasons. However the both regions of food cross each other so you will find many similar dishes but just with some different additional ingredients.
