Sticky shutter in Hasselblad Planar 1:2.8 f=80mm

This old Hasselblad Planar 1:2.8 f=80mm had a very sticky shutter, so if set on 1 sec. it would take way too long before the shutter clicks.
It's not that hard to open the lens, I use a rubber tool..., actually it's a rubber plumbing fitting and the diameter is ~54mm it's very sticky so it's easy to unscrew the front lens. You can buy those fitting in many hardware stores, just like "Bauhause".
Some brand's are: "Marley" and "Vawin" rubber plumbing fitting.
I clean the slow gear in Isopropylalcohol 99%, and lube ONLY the axle ends with very thin sewing machine oil.

Now I know with a sort of confidence that this is the problem my Planar has. Anything below 1/30th it sticks. I can set it to Bulb and time 1/2 and a 1/4 with some films with good results in the meantime. It's reassuring to know that it's probably repairable and just to see what the culprit is. You're invaluable, there will be a time when there is a dearth of technicians who can repair these lenses, but I see now why they charge so much. I'm working my way through an inexpensive M42 Zeiss Jenna 50mm of which I have two, I go one stage further each time, then put it back together and memorize the procedure, The Planar will be something that I may tackle in a few years, way too advanced for me currently. Thank you, your videos are priceless and very educational

Man Beadle Thank's, yes it looks like your lens has the same problem with the slow gear and the longer exposure time, just like many of those old lenses with a build in shutter, they will over time get stuck and then need some care, by disassemble the lens and clean the slow gear, or other part's. But it will also be a problem to get spare parts for this old equipment. And you are on the right track of try to learning how to work with lenses, and it's actually great fun to get a nice old lens or camera back to life. I think too you are right about the repair men and women, when they pass away they take all there knowledge with them, and then there is a problem to get many of the older camera's and lenses repaired. It's why I try to share my knowledge in my film's. Good luck with your photo repair. Cheers Kenneth

What a fantastic Video. I fixes my 80 mm by myself, I am so proud of it. Was really fun to do it. Very good explained, quit an even slow enough. Unbelievable, thanks so much! I bought the „Tool“ at Bauhaus, it‘s from Marley, HT DN 50 1 1/4“. Cost 1,60 or 1,90 Euro and works real fine. Just developed my Ilford-Film. The exposure fits. It‘s still nearly unbelievable for me, I fixed a Hasselblad. Wonderful!

Awesome! Watched this a couple times and just tore down a 40mm Distagon with a sticky shutter. It now works great! Thanks so much for this. I had been scared to do it although I have CLA'd shutters on Rolleis before. It wasn't scary at all. Thanks again!

Awesome video. I fixed the shutter on my 80mm. I did have a head scratching moment come up. The spring for the swinging arm of the slow speed motor came out of the groove. I was searching for interference thinking something might ha moved out of position. Sleeping on it and thinking about the problem with what was actually going on allowed me to find the spring out of position. I got it back together with little trouble. But now a new problem has come up. The shutter is not always firing with the flaps open. I am suspicious that the problem lies in the body. I have a 1964 500C. It hasn't been in use since the early 80's. I hope I am right. But great video. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these.

I put my slow speed timing gears in Naptha in my Ultrasonic cleaner. Works Great. I have not blown up yet. :) Definitely do not use Naptha on Painted parts, like ring bezels because it will remove paint quite nicely. Nice video.

Very useful this video. It has helped me identify the same problem with my lens, although my shutter's lens is not that much slow than the one of this video. But I think I will keep watching it until I feel enough confidence to work on mine. Now, I have an observation. I got the impression if that lens had any problem with the aperture. At the end of this video, when Mr. Mike is testing the lens, it is setting it to 1 second and f2.8 aperture, but when he releases the shutter, it can be seen that the aperture goes to very close, kind of f16 or f22. So, I am wondering if this is a problem as a result of the service or if mounting back the lens something got missing that should had been done during the service.

You seem very good at Hasselblad repairs -- can you advise ME please ? I as given a 1978 500C/M by a Fellow 90 year old Camera Club member where all the Mirror Bumper FOAM strip is ROTTEN and bits keep falling onto mirror. I HAVE replaced foam seals in my 35mm and C220 cameras but on the 500C/M the foam is behind a black metal 'flap' at top of camera body and I cannot access it. Also do you ever Lubricate gently the film winder gears?

Hi Mikeno, great how to. I unmounted and cleaned the timer, it works fine now. However, I also cleaned the slow gear (tough it was not necessary) and it doesn't work properly for longer shutter speeds after the cleaning. Looks like everything is moving smoothly but too quickly, there is absolutely no delay and no clicking sound. Maybe there was some part movement during cleaning, because bottom and top plate of the slow gear mechanism is not completely fixed. Do you have any idea, what could be the issue? I am afraid of disassembling it, because of many tiny parts. Thanks

Partially fixed. A hair return spring slipped from the swivel fin. 1s, 1/2 and 1/4s are working fine now, however 1/8 and 1/15 are not - it is really fast like 1/250. I found some found some service manual for 80mm Hasselblad lenses, but unfortunately the retard gear train is bit different. Got stuck. :(

Thank's Charles, but I'm not a Hasselblad factory tech, and I'm from Denmark, but I have spent many many years to learn myself how to repair camera's and lenses, and most of the time without any repair manual, NO camera tech have told me how to do so and so, even if I ask them. And that's why I started this repair channel on KZbin, simply because I would like to share my experience in how to repaire different photo equipment, Later on I have found some repair manual's and in that way make better and more detailed video's. Cheers Kenneth

Hi Rahundal, the focus part my lens came off due to loose screws. The helicoids have separated, and I don't know how to position them properly to reassemble. Did you find information for this somewhere? I can rejoin the two parts, but the focus is all wrong. Thanks.
