I don't play long, complicated classical pieces I play fingerstyle solo arrangements of pop songs and some jazz standards, but I've found that learning more music theory has helped a lot in remembering pieces. It gives a frame of reference beyond just muscle memory and knowing the fret numbers

this is so great to see. I go over these same things with students of mine but the one thing I never added was the emotional memory which makes so much sense to use that in music.thank you for sharing!!

I tend to forget pieces I compose on the guitar. Lol. Seriously, if I love a piece of music I hear, I am bursting to learn it. I find it's easier to remember and perform. This was true of your rendition of Son de Carillon. I liked it so much, I downloaded the music and taught myself the piece. Now can play it with decent memory. Same with Una de dies de Noviembre. I appreciate your emotional connection with your pieces. Keep up the great work!

At times I play a complete piece and have no reccolection of how I did it as I played totally on auto pilot and played like a midi machine in a trance the whole time. On video it looks completely akward like I'm not there but my fingers do their job often making and correcting mistakes that never are audible but unnecessary extra motion to a wrong fingering and suddenly jumping to the corrected position in the nick of time only a few clicks out from quantized. looks terrifying and explains why I make so many mistakes... sub conscious programming has built in errors waiting to jolt me out of my catatonic trance...
