Hello my name is Darlene I'm from Niagara falls I had a total knee replacement last August and it's the best thing I ever did. Right after surgery I went too physio and it was the best thing I ever did. In under 6 weeks I was able to bend my knee more then 90 degrees, I was very proud of myself the surgery went excellent also I had a good surgeon. Thank you for doing these videos it really has helped me through my shoulder replacement,knee replacement and wrist infusion all from severe rhumatoid arthritis I will continue to watch and learn. Thank you for all that you do.

I’ve had hip and knee replacement on my right leg. I’m an above -knee amputee on left side. Had the Super Path procedure on my hip 14 months ago and knee was done 15 days ago. I’m a former Marine and even though in a chair, was able to be pretty active, pain permitting. Today, I was released from in home physical therapy. Have attained 110-degrees flexion and 0 for extension. Nothing really hurts, even though I need to have a blood transfusion and haven’t had any pain meds since leaving the hospital two weeks ago. Just extra-strength Tylenol and biting the bullet. After enduring a high-tibial osteotomy and amputation, replacements are like child’s play. I’ll be 63 in August and heading out on trips starting in June. Will continue to do my exercises for the next three months or so.

Hey guys my Surgeon wanted to see 120 degree bend at 6 weeks and he would clear me to drive again ,that was a big challenge but I did it .We have 4 days in hospital here in Adelaide physio every day and at day 4 you have to be able to use a walking stick and go up and down stairs safely.Pain control at home was paracetamol my Docs don't prescribe anything stronger unless your in hospital made rehab very painfull and sleeping was not easy ,but it's been 7 months now and I'm happy with it still can't kneel on hard surface need to use a pillow ,sorry for the long winded letter but you did say comment😊😊😊 Cheers Kym Adelaide

Left knee done last March and right one coming up in 10 days! I found my progress was in stages with peaks and plateaus. I had to be patient with that. With pre-hab, I found it very helpful to practice some of the daily movements beforehand. Things like getting in and out of bed, practicing the stairs with emphasis on the strong leg, getting in and out from a chair or on/off the toilet!!! Made it much easier when the time came.

Can you do a video on leg malalignments? Valgus and varus, tibial torsion, femoral anteversion, and leg length discrepancy. And also patella maltracking. Wasn't till I was 36 that i learned I had a 5.5° valgus deformation, patella maltracking, and a leg length discrepancy of almost an inch. I've now had an distal femural osteotomy for the valgus deformation to delay the need for total knee replacement. Partial replacement to help the knee track better and because the maltracking caused bad patella femural arthritis at a young age. And the easiest thing was getting a height adjusted shoe. First time i walked with that, it absolutely blew my mind. When it's all you've ever know, you don't realize what correct is like. I'm still amazed at the difference between walking with and without shoes.

Before surgery, I could barely bend my knee 90 degrees. After surgery, it took a few weeks of PT to reach 90 again on my own. At my 6 week visit, my surgeon measured 100 degrees and he was pleased with my progress. He told me that my goal was to be at 105 degrees by the 90 day mark. I thought that I was seriously behind where I should be when comparing to other people's progress, a mistake on my part. I had 7 weeks of PT and then joined a gym and have been going every other day for the last few weeks. I see that I am continuing to make progress even though I haven't tried to get a measurement. I've come to the conclusion that I will continue to make progress with my flex but the progress will be slow and slow progress is still progress.

It took me a full year plus to recover. I never could get to full straighten. Knee is good, I can hike, dirt bike, snowmobile etc. Doctor said my knee didn't have full range of motion before surgery. I don't care, doesn't bother me. I'm almost 70. I will say I feel the pt people pushed way too hard. Took the 2 days in between therapy to recover.

So glad for this video, I’ve beat myself up plenty for not having more flexion. 3 months postop. (in PT AND the therapist pushing me to the point of pain I do get 110, but once at home I know I’m much less). Still residual swelling, and my stomach couldn’t tolerate the narcotics. Hearing your thoughts has heartened me and I’m allowing myself more time in this recovery

After my knee replacements the physiotherapist visited the following day and had me walking and attempting steps. There was an hour of intense physio. On laving hospital I attend the hospital’s physio department twice weekly for an hour’s physio each time, which left one feeling shattered, for a few months reduced to once weekly and hydrotherapy. But it was really worth doing. Between visits to physio department had to do planned exercises at home ‘morning, noon and evening’ each day which I was recommended to do for as long as possible. I had my two TKR in the mid 1990s and still do daily exercises

I had my left revision total knee replacement on February 14th, 2023. I just looked at my results on February 15th, the day I was discharged. My knee was 95 degrees flexion and a 0-degree extension. On April 11th, my last day of therapy, I was 125 flextion and 0 extension. Now, I can bend it like a regular knee. I hate it when I can't bend my knee. My first TKR on the left knee was 29 years old. My right is 24 years old, wearing down. My first one was harder than the 2nd one. My first surgeon said if I didn't have it bent at a certain degree, he would do it for me. At the time I didnt know he was kidding around. I had problems with the strength. I only had 3 days of pain meds and after therapy I could hardly do my exercises. It took longer to get my strength. I constantly had ice on it. As long as I could bend my knee I was ok taking longer on the strength. I go nuts not moving normal. That is what helped me.

Did physio at home, made a slider to help stretch my knee, used an angle gauge from my workshop to measure,kept records of my progress and took pain meds and used an ice machine for swelling. Im 67 and My left TKR is next month. I had a fall in 2009 that caused an avulsive fracture of the femur, torn ACL, and partial tear of MCL. I've struggled since then with hills, stairs, etc. I had a lot of atrophy because I couldn't put pressure on the leg for 8 weeks. Although PT thought I would only get 120 deg. I achieved 140 and have held that. But My knee has gotten progressively worse and is now bone on bone. I'm super nervous about the surgery and the recovery pain. I feel like it is time to do this but also fear it won't work for me. Your videos are very helpful to me as well as the comments on your videos. I'm really glad i found your channel. Thank you.

I have had the TKA in 2016. Then in 2018 I had a revision because the tibial component came loose. Then in 2020 I had a bone infection in my knee in April had surgery to remove the total component and had a cement spacer for 14 weeks then in July I had a surgery to put the total knee replacement back in!! I am still working on keeping my knee loose but it’s difficult. I take Arthritis Strength Tylenol for pain and an over the counter pain patch with 4% lidocaine.

I am 66 and had a TKR in April last year and think I’m doing well, walking a couple of miles a day with my dog, no joint pain and really good range of motion (around 120+ bend and completely straight ) and signed off by my lovely surgeon! however I get muscle spasm and tightening quite a lot. I went to a sports therapist who gave me soft tissue massage and suggested exercise to strengthen my quads and glutes, these I find harder than post surgery physio (ouch!) but it seems to be helping. I also lost 25lbs with the help of Slimming World (UK) and this definitely aided recovery. Just that pesky muscle tightness but I suppose it hasn’t been a year yet. Love your videos guys, they kept me informed and entertained while I was less mobile after surgery. Keep doing what you’re doing! Thank you 😊

You guys make great informative videos, Thanks for that. I am 73 yrs, old, I had a TKR on my right knee on Dec. 19th, just 4 weeks out yesterday, and still don't have 90 degrees. Before the TKA I worked out with weights 4 days a week and did a fast 3 mile walk every day. I did my assigned PT everyday and tried to push as hard as I could past the WALL of pain. I am not at all out of shape at 5'8" and 160 lbs. I am totally disgusted and pissed with my recovery. I was told that I would be driving after 4 weeks. No way. I'm supposed to be at 120 degrees after 4 weeks. I'm afraid that I missed the window of opportunity and I will never fully recover and gain the flexibility to be happy. I am now second guessing whether it was a mistake going through with the TKA.

I’m 2 years from a TKR & have full range of motion, which I had very early on & I did loads of pre hab too. But I am hyper mobile & I still have pain & 2 months ago the patella dislocated & damaged some soft tissue. I had hoped the TKR would stabilise my knee & my surgeon thought it would. Now I have an unstable sore knee which I’m finding pretty depressing.

Wish i would never done my TKR two years ago. Developed a lot of fluid between the hardware and my knee cap, the knee cap was pushed out about 1 inch. Doctor had no idea what was causing this. Four months later he released me to go back to work on this condition, did i mention it was very painful. Almost two years later most of the fluid is gone, not the pain. Every step the hardware clunks as I raise my heel with every step. Wish I never did it.

LTKR Dec 22. Just had review with OS who is happy with 110 to 120. I can easily do 110 but up to 117. Can do stairs normally and walk 3kms daily with dog. I was meant to have 15 sessions of physio post op but it took her 2 months to complete this schedule. She hurt me every time forcing flexion. I got a different physio and worked very hatd on exercises myself. Total Therapy Solutions very very helpful. Am much better when I'm not cold. Night time is the worst as I wake up every time I need to move. OS said I still have some fluid on the inner aspect and that my flexion can still improve. I'm in 🇫🇷. Thank you for your videos.

My right leg/knee recovery was traumatic. The day of the operation i was taken out of bed by hospital Physiotherapy and I walked on crutches out of the ward. Once in the corridor I was asked to squat down. And I bent my knee through 130 degrees. I would add my right leg was numb from hip to toes (As I had too much anaesthetic in my epidural) I did not feel a thing. The leg was numb for at least 8 hours after the operation. Leading to chronic constipation the following day. Day 15 I stopped taking morphine based painkillers. End of week 5 I stopped using crutches totally and had my first Physiotherapy with my local physiotherapist. Who discharged me. At about 3 weeks my leg was 6 degrees from being straight hence I placed it on a high stall and pressed it down straight. It now is 0.5 degree from straight. I have a reclining stationary bike at home which I used every day. It took two session before I could make a complete rotation of the pedals. Each time I went back and forth and finally made a complete pedal rotation. Next Friday I have a CT scan to see if my right knee implant is loose. As my right foot wonders -5.10,20, 30 degrees out of alinement with my left foot. When my right foot is out of alinement I can twist it back into alinement with the left foot. Having had my left knee replaced about a year previous I noted the achievements which gave me confidence. And I went straight to those achievements. Such as walking down my sloping drive. Taking the dog for a walk on the trailway at the back of my property. I also refused all help had no one living with me hence I had to do it all myself. I did employ a dog walker up to week 5.

I had a TKR and after 3 weeks I knew that there was something wrong (having worked as a personal trainer) as I lacked ROM, and contacted the hospital which did my operation. I was told to come in early the next morning as I'm sure they were worried about an infection. They could quickly see that I needed a manipulation under full anesthesia ( to break up the scar tissue that had developed). It doesn't usually appear so soon after the operation, if at all. The worst of all was the therapy the following 24 hours with a portable leg press machine on my bed. Total torture!! , but it worked.

My medial meniscus on right leg was REMOVED while I was in the Navy back in 1997. It has been bone on bone since then. I can put my fist underneath the knee now. That's as straight as it will go. Will a TKR fix this? Thanks

First thank you for your service. Second yes typically we can correct a flexion contracture at the time of total knee replacement. Good luck!

I’m 59 now and had a TKR done 19 Months ago. The evening of my surgery I stood beside the bed with assistance, the next day walked down the hallway twice. Third day did the stairs and was released to go home. In my humble opinion saying you should be able to bend your knee 90’ before leaving the Hospital was not realistic after my surgery. I attended physio at the Hospital twice a week , worked my Butt off 3 times a day at home and pushed hard through the pain. At 6 weeks post surgery I just made 90’ at my follow up. Range of motion has slowly increased with time. The knee to this day is still very tender and clicks nonstop when walking or moving it through the range of motion. I have been told it can take up to 3 years to completely heal and be pain free, is there any truth to this ??

I had a knee revision 3.5 years ago. Worst thing I have ever done. Wish I never did it. Pain is terrible. And range of motion crappy

I had my Knee done in 2015, had it manipulated as I was having problems bending my knee. The surgeon that did the surgery and manipulation,, said that my knee was stubborn and he couldnt fix it. What should I do? I been thru therapy,,, did not work,, Did excersizes.. not one thing worked. Can you suggest what I should do now as it is 2024. ty for your time.

Sorry to hear this Carol. The options are limited. Revisions surgery for stiffness has a 50 percent chance of success. Some people simply make more scar tissue. You would have to decide if the benefits outweighed the risks. Best of luck

I have a question. Is there an advantage to getting knee surgery early or late? Is it simply a calculation Quantity of life vs longevity of implant?
@daisy8297
@daisy8297 4 ай бұрын
For me, it was when the pain became intolerable. The Orthopaedic Surgeon I went to see told me that my knee was totally stuffed (her words🤪!) and there was no option other than a knee replacement. Another issue is that my other knee was starting to hurt because it was compensating for the bad one, and that was certainly not desirable. The implants last about 20 years or more now, so longevity isn’t the issue it used to be.

I can achieve a 123 degrees ROM on the CPM machine with no effort or pain at all. Yet my ROM on my own is 95-98 degrees. Should I be able to reach 123 degrees on my own as well? Why is there such a huge degree difference when I use the CPM machine..... My surgery was 11 weeks ago. I feel like I should be further along at this point . I have started using a recumbant bike at home in hopes it will increase my ROM. PS I personally love te CPM machine at physio. So relaxing.

You didn't address the importance of pre-hab. I put a lot into pre-surgery exercises mandated by my surgeon and I feel that's another factor in my good recovery. I did my post-surgery exercises for months which was probably not necessary for that long of a period. And walking and walking a lot. I still do and I'm almost a year post-surgery.

I was fortunate enough to travel to Arizona for a TKR. My surgeon performed a MAKO robotic surgery. I awoke from the procedure in excruciating pain, which quickly controlled, and that was my only pain. My surgery was at 0700 and I was back in the hotel by noon. Had 3 PT sessions in AZ,flew back to Canada on Sunday. I continued my physiotherapy with my regular PT who has been in business for 25 years. He said my recovery was the easiest he has ever seen. My pre-hab, re-hab was in the water. And I’m back there again to avoid Calgary’s icy sidewalks. AFAIK there is only one robotic device in Canada, and doctors are being trained at McMaster in Hamilton. Greater availability in Canada will shorten waitlists and improve return of function. It was a 2 year wait for surgery in Calgary. I waited 3 weeks for a spot in Phoenix. The price, $24,000 USD. The surgery was performed when I was 67. I’m grateful this was an option. I would do it again in a heartbeat

@@delaneyrivard7858 It looks like both of us were lucky... fortunate... in where we had our surgery. I live in East Texas and had my TKR in Shreveport. My surgery was also MAKO robotic (CT scan during pre-ops three weeks prior to surgery). The ortho closed with something similar to zip ties instead of sutures so I didn't have the high ridge and pulling of sutures. They sent me home with an ice machine which helped with the pain the first week. My physical therapy started the day after surgery with a RomTech bike that I used five times a day for 21 days in the comfort of my home. It reported my progress back to my ortho's office. My recovery, especially at 72, was quick. I am so glad I had that right knee done.

Hi i am afraid you need to push yourself exercise then rest , i got myself a static bike and yes each day i tried to bend it a little more each day it was hard very hard but if it hurts too much miss it one day then go for it next day it will come and its such a good feeling , buy yourself a nice pair of high heel shoes and put them close to your bike as a incentive ! and you will do it , i use my bike three times a day for fifteen minutes then yes i got a ice brace then put that on towards the end of almost my wearing of my shoes i used my bike four times a day and i got a full cycle and it was such excitement ! so i carried on for three months ! and wore my shoes only in the evening if i went to dinner ! but BUY A STATIC BIKE ,

Doing this is just a commercial for your services and to support the Rockefeller medical monopoly IMO. Yes, some are helped but I didn't go that route and I'm in great shape now, naturally.

If you ever are going to follow the directions of a Dr or therapist, do it if you have a joint replacement. Without that therapy, you will NEVER be happy with your surgery no matter how great a job your surgeon did.

Much easier said than done. You should try it sometime. I hear doctors are the worst patients. I can imagine an orthopedic surgeon after total knee replacement trying to describe his pain level or, even better, begging for more narcotic pain meds with the answer being no.

@@TalkingWithDocsIf only all your viewers lived in Canada, but they don’t. You have viewers all over the world. If your viewers were limited to Canadians, you wouldn’t have a KZbin channel. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy your videos, and you two are some of the most likable doctors I know. I would think you both have good bedside manner and interaction with your patients. You’re obviously sympathetic, experienced, and very well trained and educated. I’m just saying you don’t really know what it’s like from a patients point of view. Try going months without more than two hours sleep each night. See what your performance in the O.R. is like. What would be your emotional state? I think it would be even worse than your residency days. Sleep deprivation is a torture technique used all over the world, and it’s very effective.
