This project was conducted off and on over a three month period. The saw is a West German made older Stihl. There were some challenges and still are. Newer 024 parts sometimes won't work on this saw. She is running now but needs work on oiler and chain brake. Parts are on their way. Hope to have this saw in good working condition very soon.

For anyone else taking the carb off of the 024 av. Remove the Black top part of the rear handle. Turn the saw over and there is one screw at the very end of handle. Throttle linkage removes very easy from trigger. Great video on this old saw. Thanks for sharing it

Im glad to see that you put the proper fuel line in. The one you installed you put in upside down. The "s" end goes in the tank. Installed the way you did the gas line is too long and gets in the way of the throttle linkage and air filter.

Thanks for this, very useful. I've just taken my 024 apart after 30+ years, I should be ashamed of myself, but it's testament to Stihl's quality. I cut 3-5 tonnes logs each year and all it has needed is the usual service stuff. After stripping down I'm struggling to find anything that's imperative to replace.

Sir thank you ! This is the first vid that tells us exactualy how to take a 024 apart AND how to put it back together . unfortunatly I know now that it is hell of a job, especially with my rheumatic fingers GRTS from Belgium

I hope you had an easier time putting the new fuel line in than I did. I tried the aftermarket for my ms 260 and it was much to big. I bought an oem Stihl fuel line and it is much to big, too. Not as big as the 260 line but still almost impossible to get into the tank. I have thought about drilling the hole in the tank out a bit or working on it with my Dremel. I am not in a rush because I don’t have a starter, yet, for it. I spent most of yesterday cleaning it up. It had 1/4” of grease and sawdust all over it. It did not have a carb, either, but I had a good working Stihl carb that came off my ms 260 and it will work fine. I bought it from a junk peddler for $20, so I am in to it at a reasonable price. Now, I have an 024, 025 and 026, plus several ms250’s and a Ms 260P. I am going to put new crank seals in my 024 during the restoration.

I pull intake boot through. I get a piece of twine about two feet long and wrap it around the end of the boot several times. I feed the twine through the hole in the rear wall and spray the boot and hole with my soapy water spray bottle. The, pull the twine through the hole and the boot will come right through. It may take a little effort but this is the procedure detailed in the Stihl Service Manual and it works. After it goes through you can just remove the string.

I use equal amounts of Dawn and equal SuperClean and vinegar in my ultra sonic cleaner. The vinegar keeps the Super Clean from oxidizing the aluminum carb ( turn it black). I cook them for 30 minutes if real dirty and 15 minutes if just normally dirty at 70 degrees. I then rinse them off with hot water and blow them dry with compressed air. Then reassemble.

Putting a new fuel line on my 024 was a bitch. The hole in the tank was much to smalll. I could not even get the end of the hose through the hole. My saw is a 024 AVS and was made in 1984. I drilled out the hole and was then able to get the oem fuel line in it after I put a little white lithium on the grommet. I had larger hoses if I drilled it out to large. I drilled it to 3/8” which was my measurement of the grommet. It should be OK. The original hole was about .030, which is way to small for a 3/8” grommet.

I tuned up my 041 replace carb, and fuel lines, etc. then couldn't get any fuel to the carb. Tried all sorts of suggestions, then discovered that when I pushed the fuel barb piece into the tank fuel line rubber on the outside of the tank, the 90 degree portion of the exterior hose barb connector, wasn't completely seated and it was closed off by the rubber line. I'm not sure how to avoid having this happen, unless you can shine a light into the tank after you push down the fitting, I didn't even see it right away when I removed it during my troubleshooting efforts. I read tons of different posts and videos, no one mentioned this. Maybe you can include it, might not happen on any other models mine is 1978-79 Farm Boss Stihl
