I was just talking to my new friend tonight about full wraps on mid sized saws. I got a beautiful still 024 from him. Haven't put it in wood yet.

Most of my saws don't have full wrap bars, but the ones that do, are the ones I prefer for heavier work.

A lot of good information in that video. McCulloch, oh how I wish they were still in business. They built some great saws. As you've stated previous, they were always pushing and experimenting with new ways of doing things. I do like the full wrap on the 034, proper!

McCullochs have been the best and most used saws in my collection. The full wrap on the 034 makes it much more useful saw than in stock form.

I wish the original McCulloch motors was still around innovating, they were the best there was in their day

McCullochs were the best saws in their heyday. Too bad the stupenagels that bought the company quit innovating, and ran themselves out of business.

Thanks for the information. I dont know to much about sthil, one of the few on my to buy list. Surely keeps me from making a huge mistake.

I would recommend not buying most any homeowner grade saw on the market today, as most are just throw away saws, but buy a pro model. They cost more, but are much better.

Each saw has it's purpose. Some are better suited to a job than others. I like all old saws. Like I say: Good, Bad, Indifferent and No Good, all have a spot in my collection. Makes collecting interesting, as well as challenging !

That McCulloch the engineer built it to last, I have the 58 cc version and a smaller 3214 still going strong.

McCulloch's were built to last. They have outlasted all the Stihls, Huskys and others that I had purchased to replace them with.

Full skip chains helps weaker saws alot. Put a 8 pin rim on it,it increase chain speed.

I run semi skip on the 034, but for tougher cutting I just get out a saw that has some torque. The 034 is best suited with a shorter bar.

very informative info tks for the tips, question, is the 610 the exact same as the 650 minus a decompression or are there other improvements on the 650 vs the 610?
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 5 ай бұрын
The Mac 650 has an extra port in the cylinder and a larger exhaust port, and I think the port timing is a little better also. Other than those changes, the 610 and 650 are the same. The late 650's had a decompression valve. The early ones like mine don't.

Always great information just wondering do you use the same two-stroke oil and all your saws and if so, what kind might make a good video.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 5 ай бұрын
I use ECHO RED ARMOR 2 stroke oil in all but my vintage saws from the 50's. I had used Bardahl VBA oil almost exclusively till fairly recently. When Bardahl was phased out many years ago, I bought the entire stock that was left, but after many years I have run out. The ECHO oil is almost identical in performance. It is partial synthetic, just like the VBA, which works best in vintage saws. I have actually done some videos on oils, so check out some of my older videos. Thanks for watching.

Whered you find the wrap handle for the 034? Never seen one

The full wrap bar if for a Stihl 044. You need to drill one hole for one of the screws so it matches the 034 chassis. I purchased it off ebay.

I will disagree. A Stihl bar is the best bar available, as are Stihl chains. I have Stihl bars on most of my saws with RS chains. Even my .325 bars are Stihl Oilimatic bars. I do not like having to grease the roller tips on other bars. I do not have an 034 but I do have an MS 360 and it will plow through most wood. The 360 has a deco valve. As I remember, you can put a 360 cylinder on the 034. All you would have to do is replace the piston and cylinder, add a deco valve and put an 360 engine cover on it to allow the deco valve to fit through the engine cover.

When I say that the Stihl bars are not as good as the TSUMURA bars, it is not my opinion, it is based on surveys done by the logging industry. The best bars in the survey were: #1 Cannon 2. Sugihara and Tsumura 3. Stihl etc. I agree that the Stihl chain is the best. Oregon chain is not as good as it used to be. As for my 034, I could put an 036 cylinder and piston kit on it, which would have a decomp valve on it, and would have a more usable powerband. But for me, it is easier to just go out to the shop, grab my Mac Pro Mac 700, and go do my cutting. It is Lighter than the 034 and is a very fast and powerful cutter and has torque also. The perfect combo. I might look around and see if I can find a Stihl 034 Super, or an 036 just for the heck of it.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Tsumara bars are light and fragile, like Sugihara bars. Sand will eat them up. If you only cut softwood I guess they are OK but where I live sand is the predominate type of soil and so I like good heavy bars. Surveys don’t always tell all f the story.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 but you are a MAC person. I am a Stihl person. I have a Pm610 but it did not impress me the few times that I have used it. My 360 will eat it up.

The survey on the chainsaw bars was from all over the country and Canada, and the info I quoted was what type of feedback they received from pro loggers, in all types of cutting situations, not my personal views.

Many of the new saws will outperform the ol Mac 610,s in cutting speed, but one thing I can tell you is that your Stihls won't last a fraction of time the old Mac's do. I bet there isn't a single Stihl you have that hasn't had to have been rebuilt, most with less that 10 years of use. I have never had to rebuild any McCulloch saw I own, and many have over 40 years of constant use. So super reliability, combined with decent cutting speed is why I use them. I have had new Stihls and Husky,s from the late 80's and 90's, that were purchased originally to replace my old Mac,s, but they wore out quickly, the parts prices to repair them were stupid, so I scrapped them. So it all boils down to use what you like, and gives the best service.

The bar upgrade made the 034 a more useful saw. The proper warm up and cooldown procedures make saw last a lot longer. Thanks for watching and commenting.
