In this video, I use 2 vintage chainsaws to process firewood. The first saw I use is my vintage Poulan 33-14 Wood Shark chainsaw to cut up the bigger wood and the second saw I use is my vintage McCulloch Mini Mac 35 to cut up the smaller wood. I use a regular size sawbuck and a mini sawbuck to hold the different sizes of wood while cutting. Both of the sawbucks fold to make them easy to move and set up.

My Mini Mac's have been powerful, fast cutting and long lasting little saws. Mac's are the best !

Love it. The woodshark was actually the first new chainsaw I ever bought, probably in 2007, and the only one I regret selling. It lasted me 10 years only ever having to replace the fuel line and starter pulley. I only expected 3 years tops on it. It paid for itself for sure with the savings on gas by heating with wood. Made my hands go numb using it for long periods due to the lack of antivibe, but I actually miss it

Looks like you got one of the factory rejects that was properly assembled, unlike most that failed within hours of use from new. Fun story !

I certainly agree with everything you said about that wood shark. I remember the first time I saw one on the shelf at Tractor Supply. I just shook my head in sadness for Poulan - because they surely went downhill from their older saws.

I laughed when you said, "the best feature on this saw is the decal"...ha ha. The Mini Mac 35 is one of my favorite saws as well. Its power to weight ratio is really good. I agree, McCulloch saws are the best! It's a shame the original McCulloch company went under.

The WOOD- CARP truly is a piece of carp. The decal is it's best feature for sure. The mods I have done to it has improved the performance quite a bit, but it is very poorly engineered and made, and has a lot of drawbacks. The Mini Mac's have been the best small saws I have owned and used, though they can be finicky. After McCulloch was purchased, the bean counter owners phased out most of the commercial saws, then just started using fancy names on the other saws, rather than spending some dough on modernizing them. Just think, the 610 Mac was unchanged from 1978 till 1999, when Mac went out of business.

Ha ha ha...you definitely have that piece of carp running good now. The 610 having a production run of 21 years unchanged, that does say a lot about the company and their vision for the future. Oh what could have been.

The Mac's were top quality and well engineered for the most part. That is why they have lasted so long, even when the saws were surpassed in engineering by other companies. The Wood Carp runs and cuts decent with the mods I have done to it, but it can be finicky to start at times, especially when warm, and I know that if I used the saw on a regular basis, it won't last very long. After all, it is a piece Carp !

I have fixed and sold a lot of those plastic Poulans over the years. I buy generic variety packs of the metering diaphragms. If the carb doesn't work after that a Chinese carb usually works. Just got a couple more 2150s for free.

I have a wide variety of carbs on my saws, and keep a fair number of them around. Many kits have parts for a number of variations and not all parts are used on each repair. I have a drawer with all the leftover new parts in it, and that is what I use when I can't find an exact kit, as many of the parts work on a wide variety of carbs. If that doesn't pan out, the China replicrap carbs are my last resort.

Great variety ld say. I dont like the Chinese carbs myself. Luckily lve always been able to rebuild them so far. Id say your like me, l love being in the woods cutting . I kinda loose myself there. I did (lol) buy another vintage saw. A Homelite xl12 an 1 of our fleamarkets. For 20.00 l couldnt go wrong, hung on a rope with compression. Sure like the way you cut a bunch at 1 time. Wish l could cut large oaks like that. Great video!

I've used the Craftsman version of this (same saw) I think. Worked decently for what it is. Had to put new fuel lines / filter and oil pump on it. I also opened the exhaust up just a little

Some of the little Poulan saws actually gave OK service, but most didn't. Check out my video on April 2nd, and I talk about the number of good and bad comments I have received on them. I talk about why these have a such a high failure rate also. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

I've got the same little wood shark but I got a carb kit for it. Mine was the same as the 42.18 carb on my poulan pro. I had to order it by the carb kit number through my stihl dealer. I had no idea the number but I ran across it on one of chickanics vids. I didn't mention poulan because I know if I did they just would of automatically said nope not available. At the end of the phone call he said what's this for and I told him and he said lucky you ordered it by the kit number lol! Good stuff as always see ya next week!

The earliest Wood Carps had a Walbro carb, then a Zama carb, then a no name one. The Walbro kits have been obsoleted, and when I ordered a kit for a Zama, I used the number on the carb, located a kit, but it only had a few parts in it that could be used. I think I will try your method to see if I can get some kits for the original carbs I have. Good tip. Thanks.

The easy start springs on my Poulan 5020av gave up the gost, after only three tanks of fuel. After repairing that, I tried using it to mill some boards. Bad move! The air cleaner plugged up right away, and I ended up over heating it. Will have to see what carnage I have wrought!

“Replicrap Carb” 😂😂 Looks you got that old Wood Carp running good!! I read about that linkage issue on those. What do you mix that one at? 40:1 or richer? I see the chain was just spinning a bit and if you open up the low jet a bit that would bring that idle down just slightly plus aid in cold starts(less pulls). I try to tune a saw to run as rich as possible on the low jet without it idling to low. All my saws usually start or fire on two pull. Throws a bit more fuel at them when you work them hard to keep the piston cool. But those Poulan double barrel carbs are a league of their own when it comes to tuning. I might have to try one of those replicrap carbs. Lol

The Wood Carp and Wild Things have fairly advanced port timing, so once the air inlet is opened up and the air filter replaced with an open pore foam filter and do a muffler mod, they perform pretty good. When I was out cutting, I didn't have my carb adjusting tool, it takes a special tool, so the setting I had was adequate. These two saws start pretty good in the cold, but not so much when they get warmed up due to the poor design. I run 32-1 Red Armor in the cool weather, and 24-1 in hotter weather. Since they are prone to vapor locking in real warm weather, I just don't use them. The replicrap carbs will need some minor mods to make them work for the 2 barrel set up. The early Wild Thing, with the 1 barrel carb, actually has more power than the Carp with the 2 barrel carb. Weird !

Hey Mr O thanks for another good vid. Im curious about whether or not you have experience with the old echos. I picked up a 302 which was produced by Kioritz. I am only learning about saws in my retirement so don’t have a background with them which opens a lot of questions of course. Anyway if you do have something similar it would be great to see it being used on your vid sometime. Saw you later

I have a little experience with vintage ECHO's. They were sold as Kioritz originally, who still makes them today, but the name was changed to ECHO in the US. I have a John Deere badged 40V, which I have had in a number of my old videos. I also have a Craftsman badged Kioritz, which was included in my video (Vintage Chainsaws-The Good-The So So-The Weird) from 6 months ago. The Kioritz saws are very well made, had some excellent features other saws should have copied, are a bit on the heavy side for their displacement and also a bit underpowered for their size. Overall, very nice saws.

My first saw was a Mac 110, that I replaced the 10" hard nose bar with a 14" Oregon bar and chain. It worked all right, but because it had no anti-vibe, I found the vibration got to me, so I sold it and got a Husky 50. Are you not bothered by the vibration?
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 4 ай бұрын
I have a Mac 110, and have used it for years. The secret to keep the small Mac's from vibrating is to keep all the screws real tight that hold the engine block to the case. If they get even a little bit loose, the Mini Mac series vibrate quite a bit. Since they are prone to this problem, I give the saws a quick go over after about 4 to 5 running sessions. So to answer you, no the vibration doesn't bother me, as it is minimal.
