These older saws are typically what a lot of folks look for to fix up, because we either can't or don't want to spend $1000 on a 60cc+ saw. Typically, if I can fix one for less than I could sell it for, then I go for it. Crank seals, a carb kit or aftermarket carb, a possible intake boot, and maybe a clutch is not terribly expensive, and I would definitely fix this old guy. It's earned a retirement from the rental business, and put into the hands of an appreciative owner! Good video as usual, Erica!

I agree, l just repaired an 026 that someone else did not want to spend $100.00 to put back into service. I have kept it for myself, have used it several times and it works great. The lesson is don’t give up on these older saws most still have a lot of life left in them, especially the Stihl. I would like to see it given a second chance.

Greetings from the swabian sawman. An 036 is always worth to dig in deep. It's an awesome saw. In my humble opinion this saw is worth a complete rebuild. Btw acc my experience the crank seal on the clutch side is in 90% of cases the first of the 2 crank seals to fail. Greetings from Germany

Wow Erica! Kudos! What a great instructional video with a ton of information on diagnosis and repair of this chainsaw. Your info can also be applicable to many two stroke engines including snowmobiles. Thank you so much because I learned from you. BEFORE you called the owner, I thought you were being very generous with your $75. limit!! Really enjoyed how you interacted with us, the viewers! I was dang focused on that pressure gauge like I was standing beside you as your apprentice! 😃😃😃. Thumbs up everyone! 👍👍👍👍

Erica is a perfect teacher. Very nice to see this full diagnose for this old saw. I believe this is one of the best saw built by stihl, To answer the question asked by Erica, probably she could find a customer who likes this model. A carb kit, 2 crank seals, air filter, gas filter, 3 clutch springs, 1 clutch bearing , 1 sprocket, .oil and charpen the chain...to get this saw ready to run again, probably for 200 USD it's a good price. If piston and cylinder are good it's worth to fix it. Else, keep it for parts. And grind please the 2 screws on the handle !

Great video diagnosis. A professional approach to fault finding with no parts cannon. How refreshing to see. Abundant experience and logical measured approach. If only I had a chainsaw, I use the original 1 manpower saw drive. Runs on multiple fuels (Bacon sandwich gives best performance per serving lol) but is losing compression now. Finding those left handed saw blades can be a chore.

I'm fixing my fathers 044 that I inherited after he pasted. It appears to have lost a clutch spring which caused it to rub on the brake band. That caused enough heat to melt the clutch bearing and oiler worm gear. I'm hoping the crank seals are okay. Parts are on order. It's because I found your channel that I decided to try and fix it. Thank you.

Kudos to you Erica, for not forcing Stihl Ultra on your customers, it really is a dirty oil, regardless of how much it is ran. I've had major carbon issues on pistons in my saws as I ran Ultra for a couple of years after the big "push" from the Stihl dealer about how good it was and better than anything else. Been running Sabre at 40:1 past couple of years, and it has cleaned up 90% of the carbon and filth, and the saws run clean with no smell. Would never use anything else. The cheaper Stihl 2 stroke oil here is good stuff, a colleague uses that and he has had no issues with carbon buildup either. Love the 036 too, another excellent and informative video, thank you! Your channel is by far the best on chainsaws out there, with the average non chainsaw guy gaining a lot of knowledge from you.

Thank you for posting this excellent video! I really appreciate the way you carefully follow the same diagnostic methods for determining the cause of the running issue. I'm impressed that you have three carburetor stands. Maybe James Condon ought to get one for his projects. He pretty frequently does a carburetor teardown followed by reaming out with needle probes and an ultrasonic bath. Of course his carburetors are quite a bit larger. One of the folks below has commented that a lot of the time, it is the clutch side that has a crank seal leak. Maybe checking that first can save you some time. I think the saw should go to a recycling center. I don't think you can really use the engine for parts since the piston is scored, and if the piston is scored, the cylinder walls might turn out to have damage too (in places where your camera can't see.) I believe that the new light you bought is a big help to you and to us viewers, too. Thanks again for a very nice video.

I just recently worked on a Stihl ms250 that the owner said it had been worked on two separate times by the same Stihl dealer and could not get it to run right, when I got to the carburetor it had the same issue as yours, somebody pulled the micro screen out and did not replace it. after talking with the customer again he said that the carburetor was rebuilt at the Stihl dealer. after a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner and another carburetor kit it ran perfectly.😮 Love your videos always looking to see if there's a new one.😀

Well now this was an very interesting video and especially very interesting to me since I own a 036 Stihl chainsaw. I bought my 036 Stihl chainsaw in 1994 from Fairview service in Hutchinson Kansas. So it is now 30 years old and still going strong. I have maintained it very well and my fuel tank is spotless inside. Probably I should replace the original fuel filter even though it looks good. This 036 has been worked extremely hard with countless hours on it and it owes me nothing. The only thing that I do not like about this 036 is that mine did not come with a compression release the next year however did and if you get it on the wrong compression side when you pull the recoil rope, it is really hard to pull. Also my carburetor is all original and has never been rebuilt. As long as it just wants to keep running I guess I will just continue to use it. I do have other Stihl chainsaws and that is the brand that I have always used.

I just picked up an 036 same one with the red lever. Not sure what that means. Either way the saw is mint except it looks like it was used to cut tree roots. The most plausible explanation of the red lever is that the US OSHA required power equipment stop switches be red in color at that time. Then decided that black on orange was easier to identify anyway and Stihl went back to black. That sounds so typical of a government agency. Thank you for the 2T oil info! The silver colored bottles are the Ultra in the US and is NOT made by Castrol. The orange bottle is the better oil and I have just seen the return of the orange bottle locally. Another informative video!👍

Erica- the Stihl oil controversy is about the silver total synthetic. I have run it without any issues, but I am just a home gamer, probably under 5 gallons a year, spread over five or six saws. The reports are it carbons more than the mix or pure petroleum. Probably tuning and heat or lack of peak running times is my guess also. Some falsely believe that a rich mixture is a good thing 😢.
