Thanks for the video. I liked that it wasn't 2 hours of comments, just straight to how to do the repair. I got my brake handle replaced in about 15 minutes thanks to your video.

Thanks it helped me to solve my problem on my MS 260. Mine was full of sticky gunk of sawdust and oil. Once cleaned out, the break worked again. No tour to a service shop needed!

Awesome video. This is the way it’s done. I don’t care about a bunch of nonsense background info, or people showboating wasting my time. This helped me get my saw back and running . Thank you very much !

Perfect, all I needed was the view of how it was configured but I watched it all. Just put a $45 MS280 big bore kit on my 270 and gutted the muffler. Runs beautifully now.

I have found that using a Phillips screw driver works well for installation of the spring. Slide spring hook over Phillips driver shaft. Put valley of screw driver tip on spring stud, stand shaft up as you slide the spring down. Hold spring down as you turn the shaft. Spring will snap on to the stud.

Great video! Thanks. I had no idea the brake mechanism was so simply designed. My 211 had a broken "bear" spring. The assembly was very similar to the one in the video. An easy fix once the part arrives -had to order it. 3 bucks, no complaints. Take care.

Thanks, I was almost trying to take the whole thing apart before I found this and how simple it was. You're right, big spring is a bear. And I'm just a wee man. Part of the problem is just holding onto the saw. I ended up straddling the saw and holding it with my legs, then using a screwdriver to pry the hook into position simultaneous with needle nose to push the hook on.

I put a pair of hemostats on the big spring and roll it off the back pin with a scrench. It will go flying, hence the reasons for the hemostats. The rest is pretty simple to remove and replace. I fabricated a spring installation tool from a 3/16”nut driver. I smoothed the end with my angle driver and smoothed it down with my orbital dander. I put a little grease on it, put it through the loop in the spring and on the rear pin. I then stand it up and push the spring down on the pin and remove the tool. It works fine. Stihl also makes a tool for this but mine only cost me a little effort.

Excellent vid ... on my MS660 I had to put the lower bake spring on the C b4 putting everything on the pegs .. it just wouldn't fit once it was all in place. With the help of a stihl hook it went well. OK I'm back ...broken another one ... this time I'm putting some fibrefix fiberglass 1" tape around the weak point to give it some extra strength.

I’ve just done a very similar fix to a MS170 (one of the smallest saws) I fitted the brake band kind of at 90 degrees to the clip it’s attached to then rotate to the correct orientation, note that the slot is a T shape. Also there was a tiny heat shield strip screwed on the brake handle. The Chinese knock off replacement handle did not have any screw holes. I missed this until it was all assembled! It’s very close to a hot catalytic converter

I like your teaching style and video quality. I swapped out my handle in 2018. Just retesting the inertia chain brake recently with the drop test (onto a stump) and the inertia brake does not work. The handle does however trigger the chain brake like it should. Any ideas? Also for reassembling that spring, I was taught to place a piece of metal brake line into the hook on the left end of the spring and then the line will fit over the post allowing the spring to more easily go onto the post.

Great video, friend asked me to look at his saw that got driven over, handles are trashed. Note: I am a girl so I use end of bottle nail polish to mark the right side out of parts, and use a big zip lock bag around my hand and tool to catch springs and such that tend to fly

I have an old AV 034 super. The pivot post (where the C clip attaches to) broke off. Can that be repaired? I tried to epoxy it back on (didn't hold). The 'metal' isn't weldable, so I'm not sure how to fix this?
@cadamsm114 жыл бұрын
I liked the video...I currently have a similar 311, and all the mechanism is intact, but when you pull the handle back, it does not make it to the point of ‘clicking’ to disengage the brake. The little piece of that metal lever that almost looks like a chain link does not straighten all the way before the plastic handle makes it to the end of its travel. Can’t figure it out...fairly new saw. It you pry it with a screwdriver, it will click into place, but the handle won’t do it..
@losttheplot263 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Just had another saw where the brake clicks but doesn't engage.

Thanks for the vid, gives me a "chance" of trying to fix (or at least investigate) mine myself. Chainsaw runs ok. BUT, when I go to sharpen the chain on the bar, it's almost impossible to advance the chain by hand. I can move it BACKWARDS (still stiff, but moves), just not forwards. Regardless of chain tension (even if I slacken it a lot). I'm guessing the chainbrake is somehow out of adjustment, and constantly dragging??
@darrenpierce99032 жыл бұрын
Mines difficult as he'll to move chain forward. I suspect the brake band on the drum needs to be eased off a little / re- tensioned but not sure. Did you manage to sort?.. please explain how ?.. thanks
@engineeringfarmer32302 жыл бұрын
what does the small spring you reconnected do? My brake engages too easily.... I think it could be the culprit!

@Human13377 жыл бұрын
Could be, I'm not certain. This saw was left for scrap at the shop I used to work at, and I brought it back to life. I've no clue how rough of a life it had before I took it in though.
@kolbyellington70904 жыл бұрын
I know this is probably dumb. But does it matter if the brake was disengaged when you took it apart vs engaged.
@gsxrlonewolf40886 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Had a guy break the chain brake in the EXACT spot yours broke, so looking up how to fix it my main human was the first vid to pop up lol, so thanks bro, all because that bottom mechanism had came off. So hopefully the shop I go to has one in stock. Side question....ha e a recommendation on a cleaner to use besides just blowing it out with my air compressor? Stay safe human 🤘🤘
@gsxrlonewolf40886 жыл бұрын
Was a 251 that it broke on, still like you said similar set up so was really helpful
@Human13376 жыл бұрын
I generally just use the flat head on a scrench to get all the big solid crud out, and then compressed air, as I'm sure you're aware of though, using air covers everything in a 5' radius in oily saw dust =/
@Tonnsfabrication6 жыл бұрын
I use brake parts cleaner for the majority then air to finish. ( Note) a stiff handle can be caused by a clogged brake band.It's important to keep the compacted dust out of the wiggle room between the clutch drum, band and the housing. If it gets compacted and the band loses its ability to move in as well as out, it will tighten up the mechanism and shit will start breaking and falling off. I have an 046 and I find it important to keep that area clean.
@CowboyAxe6 жыл бұрын
I plan on getting an MS291, but I read on line many accounts of the MS291 being burned up by the chain brake, I suspect it was mostly by careless users, but many of them blame the chainsaw.. Anyway was there any problem with the saw brake on that model? I doubt it but it is better to be safe than sorry. Thank you.
@Human13376 жыл бұрын
We've a 291 at work that hasn't been an issue, but I've not been around any 291's in service for more than a year though, so can't really say.
@CowboyAxe6 жыл бұрын
I am pretty confident it was a user screw up. They ruin a new saw and their ego will not let them tell the truth. The brake will not engage by its self. The Stihl instructions about starting with the brake engaged and people forgetting to disengage it, or a saw so dirty the pitch and sap build up was hugging the band, hahaha.Thank you for your reply and I will buy it, sure it will be amazing.
@CTSCAPER7 жыл бұрын
What happened to the guy with the beard? I need to have a look at that on my 066. The chain brake engages but it has to be way up near the handle.
@Human13377 жыл бұрын
LOL, I wanted to keep it, but I went to a seminar the other day and felt I had to look a bit more professional. I actually just fixed the very same problem on our 660 at work. Turned out that the handle itself was bent, and effected the points at which the chainbrake engaged/disengaged. I took it off and bent it back into a resemblance of factory shape, works much better now. Would really piss me off, would always engage with the slightest bit of motion, really, really annoying.

Take a flat head screw driver, grind a slot in the middle. Place the tip on the spring stud with the spring up towards the top of the screw driver handle, it will be at an angle, pull back and it slides right on. I've fucked myself up on the spring until I started using the slotted screwdriver.
