In this video, I'll help you understand the redesign chain of the Stihl chainsaw. With so many types and models, it can be confusing as to which chain is right for your Stihl chainsaw. Cuts absolutely turbo faster. I don't know where you are, but the thicker bars are more accustomed to the places where the wood is softer. But those slim bars rip through hardwoods like there's no tomorrow. The chain is also not redesigned, it's just a new standard gauge to fit smaller bars that will cut faster. The old chains and bars will still be available.

Well I’ve cut more than my share of wood, both hardwood, and softwood. And I see no difference in the new bar and chain. If you do, that’s great. I see very little difference when sawing rock maple, ash, beech, and red oak. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but that’s not what I’m seeing.

There is a slightly narrower kerf with the new chain. They will cut a little faster. If they had a bar and chain that was 1/8" thick they would be much faster cutting because they are removing less wood. Faster cuts, less fuel, less wood lost as sawdust.

Well that works on paper, but at a certain point you run into the laws of physics. You can sharpen a cold chisel so that it’s razor sharp, and thin, but one hit with a hammer, and it’s dull. I used to be the head sawfiler at a fairly large sawmill, and believe me, there’s a give and take relationship between kerf, and tooth bite.
