Drilled out exhaust baffle using 1/4" drill bit - Check 4. fresh fuel ( Sta-bil premixed 50:1 ) - check 5. new spark plug - check 6. adjusted idle screw as instructed - check BAM !!! the beast is back! this thing runs great! I searched online for hours and watched multiple videos. This is the only one that fully helps me get my adjustments right. Getting the concept doesn't necessarily make one get the settings right. This kind of thing is hard to learn unless you have someone there teaching you. That's what this was. Thank you!

Freaking awesome you can't believe how right on the money you were I have a neighbor's FC 40 string trimmer and she complained that it was vibrating really badly at idle... What was really happening was it was loading up on fuel so bad it never got up on the RPM and the cylinder was loaded with fuel. So I fly a lot of remote control gas airplanes and I thought okay it's either lower high speed needle not even thinking about that crazy muffler and you were right on the money that screen in the muffler was totally plug in about 5 years from when she bought it. I actually loosened a little screw there at that port and the screen came out with needle nose pliers and the freaking thing ran like new. You made me look like a hero LOL. When I gave that thing back to her and said no problem my chest was puffed out so big it must have looked like a peacock! Thanks again. I'm a national service manager for a machine tool builder here in the US and it just goes to show you sometimes you got to look at the simple stuff! I was ready to tear that carburetor off and have my way with it but luckily I washed your video first 👍👍👍

Nate, thanks for the clear tuning instructions. In order to prevent any damage to the engine by drilling a hole in the muffler, you can remove the rear case, back out the retainer screw for the spark arrestor screen, and remove the screen with a pair of needle nose pliers. The screen can be cleaned with a torch and reinstalled, or it can be left out altogether. The case is easily removed and replaced with a torx bit. Just be sure the pull start is properly engaging before tightening the screws. This was explained to me by an authorized Stihl mecanic.

That screen on the muffler is called the spark arrestor. You can remove the screw holding it in place, carefully remove the screen. It should be heavily coated with carbon. Stihl advised to use a torch to burn off the carbon. I used a heat gun, some carburetor cleaner and carefully used a small brass brush while holding the screen flat in a hard surface. You have to be careful while using a brush that the screen isn’t damaged. You might not get it 100% clear, but it will then run. My trimmer quit throttling up. It’s a 5 yr old unit. I replaced spark plug, cleaned air filter and ran carb cleaner through the carb. I went ahead and removed the housing( lots of screws) and cleaned the debris from around the motor and inside the housing. A major cause of these small 2 cycle engines is carbon buildup on the spark arrestor which slows down air flow through the motor.

Mine started acting up. Sure enough the screen was clogged. i just took a flathead screwdriver and pried it away from the muffler. It's still there, but there's 1/2 inch opening into the muffler now. Worked like a charm.

@@SteveW_71 absolutely! You’re either too lean or too rich. So try turning high key in to the right a quarter turn and test. If that doesn’t work, turn it back and then go another quarter turn out to the left. Fine tune from there. Remember to check things like air filter and the spark arrestor screen in the muffler. I was adjusting the carburetor, however I went to far with it, and now the weed eater won't start. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it to start? It's an FS40c.
@AdvancedLawn3 жыл бұрын
Hey pal. Thanks for watching and commenting. I would reset the jet screws by turning the low and high screws all the way in until they stop. Then open the L screw up one and a quarter turn. Open the H screw open one turn. Back the big idle governor screw out and pull to start. It should idle. Slowly adjust the L scre in and out from there. Have any issues. Come back and ask
@dad00413 жыл бұрын
@@AdvancedLawn It started a few seconds and then died. What would you suggest?
@AdvancedLawn3 жыл бұрын
@@dad0041 turn the low screw in 1/8 turn in clockwise and try again. Repeat steps until it idles. If it gets worse. Turn counter clockwise until it runs. If that all fails you might need to tighten the idle screw a little or start checking other things like fuel filter located in the gas tank

@AdvancedLawn3 жыл бұрын
That’s completely normal my friend. Most all chokes will have that effect. Just to help it suck fuel better. Hey thanks for asking
@ol25333 жыл бұрын
@@AdvancedLawn oh ok good! I thought maybe the carburetor settings needed tweaking. Also, it seems that after the first start. They tell you you are supposed to start it in half choke if the engine is warm but I leave it in no choke and start it easier with one pull?
@AdvancedLawn3 жыл бұрын
@@ol2533 honestly those extra steps are if it’s having some trouble starting. You should be able to simply prune a few times, full choke and start right up. If it ever starts and dies at full choke, I’d just turn choke off and pull chord. If that dosent work, then I would use half choke! Hope that helps
