Thanks Steve. I was getting ready to drill and tap two holes 180 apart and pull it. You method is much simpler!

I just fixed my FS-50C today with your video - my clutch wasn't working right and I was able to disassemble the clutch OK. The drum and clutch surfaces had become glazed and I roughed them up with sandpaper and put it all back together and it worked great. Thank you!

I had a real 4 hour fight with the T27 torx screw. The end of the drive cable actually wore into the torx screw and completely stripped the head. It is difficult to see into the square clutch drum shaft, so I was at a loss as to why my driver was not engaging. After grinding down a T27, then a T25, then a T20, nothing worked. I finally used my dremmel to cut the clutch drum off the shaft. That is when I found the screw head was stripped. If your torx drivers are not working, Check the end of your drive cable to see if it is cone shaped. If so, good chance you have the same issue. The clutch drum is soft steel, so dremmel cuts easily.

you dont have to bang on your flywheel to reinstall. the slop will go away when you tighten down the clutch.

Did the motor not run because of the flywheel spinning a little? Did it run good after you did this maneuver? Should a person put some lock tight on it when putting on flywheel? Mine was running great, idling an all. When I got into some heavy weeds and took them down to the dirt around a 1 foot dia. culvert, it will not start now. Plenty of spark and gas. Will not even try to fire.
@stevebarnes80083 жыл бұрын
After me ding all this work with the flywheel. Turns out that it was the ignition coil. It still sparked, so I thought it was good. That why I started taking off the flywheel.
@stevebarnes80083 жыл бұрын
That the plug out and squirt some gas in there. Then put the plug back in and try to start it. If it doesn't fire then it may be the coil. I had spark but it would not start.

@@stevebarnes8008 Ok, will try gas in spark plug hole today. Came back to watch your video again right before tearing it apart. Thanks for the information. The aluminum block you used under hammer looked like a type of valve I used to inspect with a CMM machine.

If the flywheel key sheared (even slightly) the ignition timing will be off. This will cause your engine not to run.

I don't know

Just let you guys know, after doing all this in this video, what was wrong was the ignition coil. The reason that I thought the coil was good, was because it would still spark. Since I had checked and saw that the key was good, and I put a new carburetor on, I thought the only left to put on new was the ignition coil, so I did and it worked like a brand new trimmer!

I used a T-27 torx bit.

I have this problem with a FS55R, changed the carb and plug still no start and really hard to pull starter rope so the flywheel key is like yours is just a guess if it slipped or not I have good compression and fire so I'm changing the flywheel first.

What's amazing is that the replacement parts are so cheap you could just do all of it to save on time, maintenance etc. The HT-75 pruner is grabbing and stalling. This will do! They are reliable if treated well. Good vid.

My fs55 shaft was sticking and removed it to find that the plastic around it had melted. The clutch drum had quite a lot of play. Could this be the culprit as to why the plastic melted? Thanks! P.s - really good video!

Why was the flywheel removed in the first place ?
@stevebarnes8008 Жыл бұрын
The reason that I removed the flywheel was that I thought it had sheared the key and the timing was off but it wasn't. It had spark, so i figured the ignition was good. Even though it had spark, it still would not start. I replaced the ignition coil and it starts and runs great.

Hey thanks for going through this. I was walking home from the bar last night and someone had this trimmer just out on the curb, clearly looking to get rid of it. Does the clutch engage when the throttle is open due to the higher rpms?
@stevebarnes80089 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a centrifugal clutch meaning it will not engage until the engine RPMS are high enough to sling the the clutch out against the clutch hub and starts rotating the shaft. Like how a torque converter or stall converter in a car.
@stevebarnes80089 жыл бұрын
You can buy a brand new Stihl carb for thus trimmer for about $30.00. That is usually why they are not running.
