Best advice from Don: “…get your screws started right away” and you’ll stay out of trouble with that cover assembly. We can definitely perform this repair ourselves and save money. His experience is worth every penny!

Phil from Kansas City here. When I work on string trimmers at my Stihl store in south Kansas City especially the 4140s and 4144s, I remove the drive tube from the engine assembly and housing. I use a sharpie to mark the where the meets with the throttle housing to give me a reference point to verify the seating when I reassemble the tube and engine assy. I do this because I find it less frustrating to fight drive tube as I perform a complete engine check on the unit, which I perform on nearly all units that come in to my shop. Another tip I have is when I work on a shafted unit with the shaft in place, I use a Portable Rifle Cleaning station to hold the unit level off my workspace and most stations contain a tray that can utilized to hold the fasteners and items you remove during the service process. Thanks and have a blessed day

Good tip on using the vice grips to hold everything together with the top cover off
@zacharykurik75236 ай бұрын
also a tip is if all 5 bolts fall out 4 are long 1 is short the short one goes in the middle where the shaft is. only reason is if you get them mixed up and put a long one where the sort one goes she might not pull over and the shaft hits the bolt making it seem like the motor is seized. Not sure what it hits but pull cord locks up. great video donyboy73. those are hard to handle when apart they get very floppy great tip with the vise grips!!!

I have learned so much from these videos. I live way out in the country side and there is no shop anywhere near me. I have learned to fix my own equipment. Thank you for uploading these videoas.

Always the best small engine equipment repair videos. The camera gets focused on the import details, does a great job explaining the symptoms and how to fix them.

Have had this same trimmer for quite a while. I remember the coil went out after warranty years ago. Stihl took care of the part, I had to pay the labor at the dealer. Not a bad deal. The fact they warrantied the part told me they must have had an issue. I’ve had several pieces of stihl equipment over the years and that’s the only coil I’ve ever had go out. Great video.

I owned that same unit, bought new and it would die after it warmed up. Dealer replaced the ignition module after two times taking it back to the shop. The new coil worked for years until I scrapped the trimmer.

Love you videos. Very informative. Thank you for providing true value on the internet. The coil must be getting over heated. I see it's very close to the cylinder head with no heat shield between. Compair the FS38 design to the FS55. That may give a clue to why the FS55 coil fails more often and what the solution might be to prevent future failures. I just looked at an exploded view of the FS38 motor and it appears the coil is mounted such it is not completely on front of the cylinder head. I may be wrong. You might look at the FS38 if you have one to verify.

I know with the Stihl HS45 hedge trimmers it's not just a matter of fitting any HS45 hedge trimmer onto the machine because half way through the model they changed the ignition coil & the position that the flywheel key was indexed so you need to match the serial number of the machine up to the ignition coils part number because they're different after a certain serial number !

I have one of those HS45s. No problem with it yet but I wish I could store these tidbits of info in case I need it in the future. Maybe I'll remember this comment and look it up.

I replaced a coil for a friend who had a stihl backpack blower with a used coil off eBay. Way cheaper all the way around plus eBay stuff comes with a guarantee when you buy it that it will work or money back.

lol had two ignition modules lately . A BG 50 and a BR800C .The 800 only had spark at a higher rpm . ( I used a drill to spin the crank on that one. Had a few grounded out kill switch wire too before . I used the paper from the box it came in . About .010”

Do you ever clean the connecting points on the old one? I have had a couple of them come back around with a good cleaning. They just stop making a good connection due to rust and dirt buildup.

What is the difference between the fs38 fs45 and fs55 ?
@danielesilvaggi6 ай бұрын
Hey Don love the channel, I purchased 2 B&S 17.5 hp motor on a scratch and dent sale from Princess Auto and one of them has no spark. Now would this be coil related or is there a safety feature that is preventing it from sparking as the other one is not sparking as well but that one has a blown engine and useless? I have it on a makeshift engine stand to work on it. Thank you in advance
