The MS 251 is one of those saws that strikes a really nice balance between size, weight and power. I use mine all the time because it's enough saw for 90% of the things I do and I can use it all day without getting tired. Those other 10% of jobs though I just plain need more saw. That's when I bust out the Husky 562xp or 572xp. Husqvarnas are also excellent saws, I'm not a dedicated fanboy for either brand. I live on 70 acres; about half of which is heavily wooded. I live in the stateline area of Illinois/Wisconsin and use wood for heat so I really use my saws hard

That was a great test for the saw. To some, it may seem a bit small, but it is very versatile. I've had the 025 for over 25 years, and I finally replaced it this year with a brand new 251. They are a tough hobby saw for DIY guys and a great limb saw for serious tree cutters. The weight is phenomenal and creates less fatigue throughout the day. Some recommendations I have for longevity are keep your saw clean. Take the bar off and wipe it down before putting it away. Buy the best and deepest cutting chains that you can. If you are experienced, don't get the anti-kickback chains. They take a lot longer to cut through logs. At the same time, you need to be aware of what you are doing and respect the power of the saw. Nice touch by showing safety with a helmet. This is my next purchase. I've been lucky for 25 years, but even for hobby cutting, it can be a life saver. One last thought for all you tough guys. Wear a support belt to save your back. you only have one, so take care of it. Wear ear plugs too. Unless you want hearing aides when you are 45 or 50.

agree with you 100% on the safety stuff here. saws are loud enough my personal pref is earplugs then at least 29DB reducer ear muffs. Helmet hands DOWN! I got clocked in the head by a swinging limb a few years ago and without my helmet on would've been a bad deal. Also...never EVER run a saw WITHOUT chainsaw chaps....mine saved my lower leg and a trip to the ER. Safety gear isn't an expense..it's an INVESTMENT!

From Australia - Thanks for a great vid, I have one I use on 5 acres of hardwood and love it, but I never understood why it says 18" on the bar but actually measures 16" cutting length, I feel ripped off. They are around $900 here in OZ.

That makes it much easier to start and keep running. Most saws that have idle issues i have run into were dirty spark arrestor. That is what it is called. You can easily clean them by burning the carbon off with a torch or do what you did and just chuck it. They say it can throw sparks and cause fires without it but I have yet to see that ever happen. I think it is just to please the environmental morons
@danielpadgett2831
@danielpadgett2831 10 ай бұрын
The screen is there to prevent sparks from coming out and start a fire. If you use to much in your mix it will clog that screen and it won't rev up

I also have a MS 311 and the reviewed MS 251. I Love em both and they have proven to be reliable work horses for me. The MS 311 is a tad on the heavy side but is rugged as I can ever have asked for in a chainsaw. Have you done a review on the 311? If not, it would be nice to see one from You.

Responding to old comment: Mine stopped doing it when I put it in the basement (stable temperature) instead of out in the shed. They use a one-way valve, so fluctuating temperatures can create pressure differential and cause oil to leak out. Example, cold air is let into the tank during refilling, then expands when it heats up in room temps. Having less oil in the tank (refilling before use instead of after) helps too.

Does mine also. Even with longer storage periods. One of the perks of owning a chainsaw I think. At least it keeps the sprocket nicely oiled

@@ryanshepherd6457 I can't say much about the 180 but my 170 has dropped many trees over 12 in diameter. It has plenty of power. I've never struggled with anything. You have to keep the carbon off the spark arrestor though or it doesn't idle well. I've put mine through 5 years of hell as I live in a forest and it still runs like the first day I bought it. It has always leaked chain oil but that is my fault because I use old motor oil. Some say the oil release isn't great but it hasn't caused me any issues but I really don't care because I have an abundance of oil and it doesn't leak bad. I've worn out 4 chains now as I resharpen my own. I run my chains to the teeth are gone. I still use that one often. It is easier to start, plenty of power, and is much easier to carry than the 251.

The Stihl Moto-Mix is pretty pricey even for canned fuel. Canned fuel isn't a waste of money though, particularly if you own Pro saws. There's a lot of stuff in pump fuel that's bad for 2-stroke engines and I'm not talking just about ethanol. Olefins and benzene just to name 2. It's great for storing your saws ready to rock and roll also. I usually use the Husky canned fuel in my 435, 450, 562xp, 572xp and my Stihl MS 251 and my 462. All my saws run great on it, it's 95 octane and it's very clean stuff. Doesn't have any of the junk pump fuel does. Even after it's opened it has a shelf life of 2 years (I cut a lot so mine never stays open more than a few weeks) because there's really nothing in it to go stale. It's significantly cheaper than the Stihl stuff. I stay away from TruFuel altogether; that stuff is inconsistent garbage as far as I'm concerned
