Look how much carbon is on the piston with Stihl oil... And that piston was hammered, but don't understand how did it run without ground electrode. I think I saw the electrode above the upper piston ring..

Nothing gets by the Canadian coroner of chainsaws. She seeks the truth often at her own cost. A methodical assessment identified the cause of death without question. While the 290 wasn’t used much it gave everything it had in the end. The chainsaw was put to rest with honors. The music and the cat paying his last respects brought tears to my eyes. This video is destined to be a KZbin classic. I smell a KZbin Academy Award in your future.

I have been subscribed to Donnyboy for probably 12 years. I have watched some of the others that you mentioned but drift away. Here’s why I like your channel and Donnyboy: there is no nonsense, you’re not milking the clock for the algorithm, etc. You get right to business, explain the problem, then get on with fixing it. Usually in 20 minutes or less. The repair is entertainment enough, I’m not here for the personality (that’s not to say you are not perfectly nice), I’m here for the knowledge you impart and to share the satisfaction of a job well done. Humorous edit: Stihl saws are almost indestructible. I partially watch with horrid fascination to see what carnage people inflict on their babies.😂

I can’t pinpoint just one thing about your presentation but here goes. You have a wealth of knowledge, you walk through why you’re doing things and how you’re doing them; you have a gentle presentation, with just enough anecdotes to keep it light hearted, yet serious enough to point out where things can be a danger, either to the operator and or equipment. Plus the methodical progression throughout diagnosis and repair. There’s always something to learn and I’m amazed by the sheer amount of and variety of machines you repair. And who can go wrong with the occasional glimpse of a cat.

Damn. Hate to see a chainsaw go down because of a spark plug electrode. I don’t take my equipment in to be worked on and demand it be fixed right away. I wait my turn. My MS361 was in the shop for 5 weeks to replace the carburetor. I didn’t complain. I wish you were the one that worked on my saw in the first place. I bet it wouldn’t be back in the shop after two tanks of fuel because it would shut off and now it won’t start. Great video from a fan in central Pennsylvania. The end of the video was both sad and funny at the same time, lol. Glad I found this channel. Have a good week.

Like you, I have watched KZbin for many years now. I was 'on the internet' before it even began in 2005. It is now my main interest in finding things interesting to observe. I love the way you can search anything you can imagine up and there will be a video of someone talking, demonstrating or just plain doing it the thing you are interested in. If someone had told me then that I would used it to spend an evening watching a movie with someone or watching a lady in Canada repairing chainsaws, I would have been very sceptical of that. Yet, here we are. I like the way you explain things slowly and how detailed, thoughtful and diligent you are in your work. I have Complex PTSD and sometimes get so hyper anxious, that I am pretty much non functional. I have a professional person working with me on that but I have found that watching your videos calms me down so much, it's better than any medicine or thought exercise that I can do. When all seems lost, I turn on the TV and sit and watch you fix a chainsaw and within minutes a sense of stability returns. I'm not sure exactly why, I just think it's your calm demeanour and methodical approach that suggests that everything is going to be ok. I hope you can keep making them. I enjoy the opening shots of your place there in Ontario, no sound just a look around the place a perfect prelude of what's to come. The best to you and your family. Love Canada!

You're right about the people that want a quick fix. Its never quick and its never contractors because they know they need backup equipment for these situations. Interesting side story. Had a Honda 200X 3 wheeler when I was younger. Wanted to go mushroom hunting in a far away woods and worried about someone taking it while I was gone as they have no keyed switch. I decided to take an old plug and break the grounding electrode off so it wouldn't run. Just switched them when I got to my destination. After finding a bunch of mushrooms I was excited to get home so I hopped on and took off. Nearly home, I remembered I hadn't put the good plug in. Hondas ignitions system was strong emough that it jumped the gap to the edge of the plug. I could not believe that it could do that. LOL

I want to add quickly if nobody did this test….some might be wondering if the saw would even run with the piece of grounding electrode missing. I tested this with an old plug on an 028 Super Wood Boss tonight and the spark will indeed jump all the way from the center electrode to the threads of the plug. It’s like 1/8” or better! Incredible it would still run and hammer itself to death but unfortunately…it would, and did! Just FYI for anyone curious about that.

I’ve been a small engine tech for over 25 years now, but I still learn a tip or trick that I think makes me better. I have the Silver level training with Stihl, I’d love to get the Gold. I’ve been Homelite certified and Briggs & Stratton, oh and Tecumseh as well. Now at age 65 I plan on being picky at what I work on, but it’ll help supplement my retirement that is 20 months away. The first saw I rebuilt was a MS-290 that had been straight gassed. My son's father-in-law had loaned it to a neighbor. He gave it to my son, and I put a short block kit in it. My son still uses it from time to time. Nice touch at the end, and slowly hauling it away!

I am very impressed with this video. I like watching engine tear downs. While draining the fuel, you commented that the fuel looks good to you. What did you think of the bar oil? I notice that you are gentle with the parts, which is good. I had thought you would complete the teardown without hurting your hands -- but I think you did get one small cut. I am wondering if it might help you to put a long paper or plastic sheet under the saw while you are working on it. Of course, paper and plastic can be more a hindrance at times. It adds a cost item that you have to pay for. You were concerned that the electrode from the spark plug had fallen onto the floor. That is why I'm suggesting paper. As to the electrode...I am guessing it is now nicely fused onto the engine cylinder and the piston. It is amazing that the connecting rod didn't break and shatter. That is a tough connecting rod!
