Happy Sunday Morning! I am SO glad that you’re here! *Please* Like this video and leave me a comment (or two or three!) down below! This video is the first of a series I am going to do involving buying used chainsaws on FB Marketplace and the risks involved. I spent $50.00 on this saw. Did I win or lose on this one? We will soon find out! Don’t forgot to comment - I will be down in the comment section looking for you! And finally, THANK YOU to all viewers, subscribers, members and Super Chatters! Your donations to the channel go right back into helping me save more saws like this one! 🙏

@@marriedwithsmallengines I can't wait to see your face when you start your first saw on new fuel and there's no smoke at all. Then you can try to decarbonize the fouled spark plugs and pistons or burn off the partially clogged spark arrestors... You will be BLOWN AWAY with difference...

I think you got a screaming deal on this one. Bar and chain along are probably worth at least half of what you paid. Sell the shrouds and chain cover and you are well into profit. And that is assuming worst case scenario where a tune up doesn't leave you with a running saw.

I bought a 026 (1985) that wasn’t running, said it’d been 3 years or so since it had run. I paid $175 us for it. It’s in nearly identical cosmetic condition. I put a fuel filter, air filter, three new clutch springs, and fresh gas. Runs pretty good! I am going to put a new 18” bar on it. I’m very happy with it, my first and only Stihl I own.

Sounds like a great deal for a 026!

I have another comment to make that I should have made some time ago. I have watched a lot of different repairs on You Tube dealing with small engines. I have never seen one person do a pressure / vacuum test on not one engine. I just wanted to mention that I have learned a great deal about small engines repairs from you. One of my greatest learnings that you have taught me, you need the right equipment to do repair's. the right way.

At least it is not a clamshell design and can be easily taken off and I suspect it would be salvageable? I've saved so many "bad " piston/cylinder saws and many are still running many years later! Thanks for the video,Erica!!!

For good content. I would ask Tyler to take a closer look at the cylinder and see what his opinion is. If he thinks it can be saved I would go forward with the repairs. We would enjoy watching the process of cleaning of the cylinder. The saw can always live in the parts bin if it doesn't work out. No quick and dirty. I'm going to watch your Echo video! I can't believe I missed that one. Me like Echo! 🙂🙃

Bonjour Erica. Very nice video on buyer beware. Being a 2 stroke mecanic myself i love to test machines to there limits. It can not be done on a custumer saw because of warranty issues so having a cheap saw that could run with a minimum of repairs i would fix it and do a long term test. As time goes by you could keep us informed on how things are holding for this saw. For the fuel inlet on the carb since there is water damage on the pump side i would say the water in the gas froze and the pressure build up cracked the plastic. Continue the great work.
@richardstutler30587 сағат бұрын
Ps. From what I saw with bore scope look , it should only need cleaning and new set of rings especially with such a good compression test, looks like you got to it before it crashed!!!!!

The carburetors were probably cheaper without the choke plate! Makes me wonder if they were trying to compete with Dolmar at the time that offered fuel injection choke and without the butterfly was said to have improved air flow.

Excellent advice! 50$ is a good gamble on that model. If the cylinder can be cleaned, the Meteor piston comes highly recommended by this guy. Just did an 028 and it works great. But it’s my saw, I’m not looking to turn it around and make money. Being a Stihl dealer and slinging aftermarket parts is a slippery slope I’d imagine. Regardless of what winds up happening it’s always good to have a look at this stuff for the people who want to learn. -2 F here in southern Wisconsin today, you guys stay warm in the nort!

Man, it's cold up here! Bitter, face biting cold! I feel the need to demonstrate that it is so easy to buy a bad deal on Marketplace. So many people that sell saws have NO idea what they are talking about and it's easy to bring a paperweight home.

Meteor pistons are usually heavier than an oem. But excellent quality.
@BenKickert18 сағат бұрын
Great deal on the saw. If it were mine, I would rebuild the carb, replace the fuel / impulse line / spark plug, and then send it. If the vacuum leak and / or cylinder scoring become an issue, then you sell off the parts to recoup your money. I say that because I have seen saws in similar conditions that run great for years and years. If it get's worse, then you are in the exact same position you are now. If it holds strong, you have a great saw for super cheap!
@johnnewell502514 сағат бұрын
My $0.05: carb kit, JB Weld on that cracked carb inlet, replace fuel system parts and both crank seals. Start it up and see how it runs. It won't run forever but with 160# compression it might run a long time if properly lubed. I'd find out before investing time and $ on replacing or even cleaning the piston, rings and cylinder.

Remove cylinder and piston, remove rings, clean and shape the groove because I noticed a small damage, sand piston, sand cylinder to remove the little scoring. Install old rings again. Check the rings are moving well inside its groove. Change the cranck seals. Check the gasket between cylinder and engin, replace if necessary. Then repare the carb with a used part. Change the line if it's not holding pressure. After this, you'll get a saw ready to run again. Set the hight and low jets if required. Allways interesting to see how you find all the problem of a small engin !
@Swabian_sawman14 сағат бұрын
To your question what to do with the cylinder: Clean the cylinder and assemble an aftermarket piston (e.g. AIP). I know you don't like aftermarket parts. But in that case that's the best compromise. If you continue to run the saw this way you'll destroy the cylinder completely. Actually if it was my saw I would make a complete rebuild. Best wishes from Germany

Thanks Erica, I suggest cleaning up the piston and cylinder if possible. Why they made that carb connection plastic instead of brass is bizarre.
@ianbarnes859317 сағат бұрын
It’s a bargain for the price paid. I’d love to get one like that here in the UK. I’d clean up the bore best as possible and probably reuse the rings. New crank seal, fuel lines, spark plug and salvage the carb. Maybe find a used carb and make a good one out of the two.
@tywebbgolfenthusiast895017 сағат бұрын
Given that the mechanical problems kept piling up on this saw, I’d keep the parts and if an 026 comes in that is mechanically sound but is beat up, you can zhuzh it up with those nice plastics.

The flywheel side looked tilted and a little banged up to me. And yes, it leaks! I would hone the cylinder, may try Scotchbriteing the piston, and replace the rubber bits you mentioned. Then I would scuff up the base of the plastic nipple on the carburetor and clean it well, then coat all around it with a good epoxy. I believe you'll have a good running saw again. And if in the future the saw loses compression, but is otherwise ok, I would go with an aftermarket top end.

I am very positive towards using lightly scored cylinder and pistons. In this case I would not release the saw for service without taking the cylinder off and inspecting it more closely. If there is mainly discolouration and completely free rings then put it back together and let it fly. Surely you can put a used inlet nipple into that carb. You should be having scores of old carbs laying around. If you can't find one just go out to the graveyard and dig one up.
