I have this saw. It’s cheap but, a darned good saw. I STILL keep it clean. It NEVER gets that nasty. You want to ruin a good saw?, keep it nasty.

I don't think these Stihl MS-170 chainsaws send enough oil to the chain. I was under the impression, and the Stihl manual alludes to this, that one tank of gas should use one tank of oil. I'm getting about 3 or more tanks of gas to one of chain oil. Whatya think?

I know the recommended range is 12-16" but would I be able to run an 18" Stihl Rollomatic-E Bar on this chainsaw?

Did you use a solvent to clean the plastic case parts? If so, what?

Soak in washing powder, bleach and hot water. Scrub with a stiff brush. Best degreaser on the market.

i have 2 questions for you if you don't mind answering, 1) i have this saw and i have cleaned all the carb and it runs but for some reason when it's warm when you press the trigger it's like it wants to cut out so several quick presses and hold it runs full on do you no why it would do this ? 2) i have new bar and chain and i tighten like most show how to but the chain keeps coming loose is the a reason why if not how do i stop this happening thanks

beauty video. there's another guy showing a complete disassembly and put together but yours seems to be a more practical procedure for maintenance.

When you clean, what’s your favorite spray?

Hey, so I’m American, will these methods work over here? (Sorry, sometimes the most cliche’ dumbass American things to say pop in my head and I can’t resist saying them 😂). Thanks Dude, good video, very helpful.

I pulled down my rather new MS 170 for its post breakin maintenance, yesterday. I cleaned and lubricated everything on the PTO side and cleaned the spark arrestor screen. One thing I noticed is the factory had lubricated the worm gear with a light blu grease, probably a synthetic white lithium grease. I used regular white lithium grease on it and the sprocket bearing. I have been very pleased with my MS 170. I did update the chain adjuster to a side tensioner and put steel bucking spikes on it, otherwise it is stock. Your bar looks a bit worn. I cleaned it before I put the bar and chain back on my 170.

Hi mate, I’ve got a brand new chainsaw ms170 it’s all done up fine, but every time I use it there is always a load of black oil dripping from the muffler each time I use it and it never seams to stop, only when the chainsaw is turned of it stops, I just came across your channel and this video and thought I’d ask for abit of advice before I start taking it apart because I might not need to yet. Appreciate any help👌🏻

Only thing I can think of is two stroke oil type or the mixture too rich most Stihl saws are 50 to 1

That’s a good thing, you got plenty of lube in your fuel mix. 40/50:1 mix ratio is what you should use along with non-ethanol gas.

That is how not to keep a saw. I clean and sharpen every saw after use. If you don’t, you are asking for problems. I use compressed air and a small paintbrush. I use white lithium grease or high temp wheel bearing grease on sprocket bearings. I lubed those on my ms 170 and ms171 last week. I do everyone of my 15 saws, at least once a year.

They have plastic ones molded on the case. I bought a pair of metal ones. There are mounting holes on the saw.

didn't put screws back in on brake on cover
@J.E.Taylor2 жыл бұрын
This saw actually doesn't have screws on the brake cover, it just snaps on. Pretty weird since there's a spot underneath where threads could be cut with screws and the cover has recessed spots there.
