had the eexact same experience - bought brand new - about a half dozen uses and the cord tore... then, no warranty, shop fee of $60 bucks..... nah, i watched another video (much better in fact) and did it on the kitchen counter in 10 minutes retying the same cord.... be safe

Same here. I believe I got a dozen pulls. They use a very cheap rope if you examine it you will see a bundle of straight fibers in the core with the jacket the only braided part. Once the jacket wears the fibers fall apart and poof broken recoil rope. If the main recoil spring comes out it becomes a much more difficult process. It is in there so deeply it is hard to handle as you recoil it. I got some quality (cheaper versions are the same with a loose bundle of fibers in the core) parachute cord of the right size in a fully braided nylon. Should last longer than Stihl's three day version!! Pretty disappointing to say the least. All these years making saws and small engines but they can't tell a cheap quality rope from a good one. Must be another MBA in charge of the quality.

I guess I could make $27.50 for 10 mins worth of mindless work, $165 an hour is not bad :) I honestly think there might be a business model here.
