This is the first video I’ve seen that really shows how to flush the entire oil system. Makes perfect sense. Thanks! The only thing I do differently is pull the filter and spray it clear with brake clean or whatever outside the tank. That way I can eyeball it. Saves one more tank flush. I keep a paint brush specifically for cleaning around fuel and oil caps before removing.

Ya its important to keep that tank clean.

Nice one Scott-another fine tutorial! ms 290-a farmers saw? Bad operator maintenance i think, together with those terrible stihl caps that everyone seems to hate!😊 See You laterrrrrrrrr🤙

For the oil pump (have a 029 actually but these seem the same design) output plastic elbow that connects to the housing oil port, what would you do if the nipple on the motor housing breaks off? Any fixes other than trying to find a new housing? And what to expect if having to replace that as far as other items needed? Other than that nipple breaking off from a piece of random metal getting behind the drum for some weird reason, the saw still runs pretty good. Hate to part it out
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
I think you're going to have to get creative. First thought was epoxy the elbow in place but that could be difficult as I think that elbow has to swivel to get the pump into place. Next thought is to replace the elbow with a rubber hose. clean up or drill out the broken nipple to accept the hose. Dunno, good luck.

Great video! How do you change the oil filter/pickup? My MS290 is not oiling, the saw is at least 15 years old and I've never changed that filter so that's where I'm starting. The hose is too short, you can't reach it through the oil-fill-hole, and it doesn't look like there is a removable tank. Any help is appreciated
@TheGreasyShopRag Жыл бұрын
On a Stihl where you cant reach the filter that usually means the filter comes out the back of the tank with the hose. I always try to use a pair of hemostats first but before that I blow light air pressure backwards from the pump and observe the filter. It may not need to be changed.

@TheGreasyShopRag thanks! I figured it out, once you take the wrap-handle off, the oil-line is exposed and you can pull it out completely from the back

can you tell me why my STIHL MS290 IS LEAKING OIL FROM THE TOP COVER WHEN IT IS RUNNING?
@TheGreasyShopRag2 жыл бұрын
If you said leaking gas I'd have a few ideas but I never heard of one leaking oil from the top cover.

It was a Stihl family member that invented those damn caps so they're here to stay.

How does the debris get into the oil tank?
@TheGreasyShopRag2 жыл бұрын
When operators open a dirty saw in the field the debris just falls in from around the cap. I suppose there are other sloppy practices like setting an oily cap on dirt then putting it back on without cleaning it.

I don't remember but it was probably billed for a half hour labor. I've agreed with my employer not to discuss labor rates.

Slams a $400.00 saw down on the bench not once but twice. Nice.
@TheGreasyShopRag Жыл бұрын
Lol. The only reason I get away with that is because the benchtop floats on a single mounting point. Its connected to a winch and lowers to the floor. If you're curious, check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXa8ZGqIp7qLia8
