I just rebuilt my 029 super and converted it to a ms390….fairly straight forward other than the brake system…(glad I took a pic 😅) after watching a few videos I realized I didn’t have to take it apart other than the drum and clutch … FYI ….when tapping on a the end of the crank with threads….its always a good idea to install the nut on the first few threads to prevent damage …

Its the other way around. If you have scoring on the intake side it's often straight gased.

Thanks for the tutorial. I have a 310 that has had the spark plug thread stripped. Saw running great apart from that. Helicoil doesn't want to work and I thought a new cylinder may be the only option. Apparently the pistons come in two sizes for the 310. Wondering if its worth doing. Cheaper saws have a different chain pitch so cant use anything from stihl.

You can change the rim sprocket for 325 or 3/8. Use a mic to see what size bore you need. Good luck and thanks for watching!

The only reason there would be sparks is if the wrong oil is being used or the mix or tune is wrong. The 290,310,390 series benefits greatly from a good muffler mod. Easily a 25% power gain.

I have a 310 that I'm working on. Your video has been very helpful. It pulls crazy hard, but pulls easy with the plug out. There's no scoring. Someone suggested a valve adjustment. What are the gap measurements for the valves, and where are they? I didn't see any valves during your disassembly. Thanks & Stay Well - Bill

You are correct, no valves on a 2 cycle. Easy pull with plug out is good but shouldn't be "crazy hard" to pull with plug in. Does it pull all the way and start with the plug in? Just wondering if the plug is impacting the piston. This one had a wrist pin keeper lodged in the crank area making for hard pull but that was hard to pull with plug or not

Thank you for your prompt reply. As far as I can tell, the spark plug is not hitting the piston. I'm waiting for new gas lines as the old ones are cracked & leak. Scrutiny is required when checking the lines, because cracks are not always visible to the naked eye. I took 3 pix of the intyerikor tank line, and even a close up did not show cracks. I put a 10X magnifier over the camera lens on my phone, and lots of cracks showed up. I'll try and send you the pix. Good teaching aids. Later - Bill @@RayofallTrades

@@WilliamHowardJewelry I am having trouble thinking of items that would lend to your issue. Harder than normal to pull with plug but easy without. Coil rubbing wouldn't change it. Plug impacting you eliminated. If it was a liquid, you would see it. Binding starter could he an issue but doubt it. Dunno, I'm stumped right now

Aftermarket Carb kits I usually get from Amazon. Definitely compare the pictures before you buy because the different models are subtle

Is there two versions of ms310 yours has a decompression valve but mine doesn’t

Yes there is. Depended on the year ( I think) and if it has an aftermarket cylinder

You can plug off that valve too if you don't need it

I just put a new engine carburetor .all new hoses .NKG plug, etc . Won't run unless I add fuel to the intake. I have checked and rechecked everything, including buying another carburetor, and nothing seems to work . Compression is 120 Sparkplug is gapped at 029 Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Well it runs so rule out compression, spark timing and air. Could have vacuum leak but usually the issue is a blocked impulse hole.

@RayofallTrades I put a new impulse line in today and ran a guitar string / steel wire inside the barbed impulse hole that's on the engine. Wire goes in with no resistance, so it should be open and working . I ordered another carb today from Stihl. Also, I replaced the tank vent and tried running it with the vent off .no change at all. Do you know of any way of testing the impulse line ? I tried putting my finger over it while cranking, and I couldn't feel any air or pulse . Is it possible the OG stihl carb was bad and the Amazon carb I have is also bad ? I even tried soaking the Amazon carb in fuel at the advice of another 2 cycle repairman he said it helped with startups by soaking the carbs internals. I've fixed many 2 cycles in my life, but this one has me stumped. It has to be something simple. Thank you for any help and info . 🇺🇲

Sorry for the late reply. I think you are looking at a vacuum leak. Crank seals, intake leak or base gasket

It"s as simple as replacing flywheel. I just went through the same thing replaced engine and still no start flywheel key will look ok untill you compare

This one had some damage internally due to original seals being used.

I understand that but Chinese replacement parts for OEM products like Stihl and every other manufacturer are junk and not the same as buying a cheap new Chinese made saw that will last longer than this In the long run 😕

@@wertz987 now there are inexpensive Chinese parts, that are made to OEM specs. You just need to find them. But yes, you can also get good quality Chinese chainsaws, for the same price as just an OEM engine.
