My thoughts on the battery powered MSA 220 C chainsaw from STIHL.
I love that they're making more and more akku chainsaws!
Hope you enjoy this review from FemaleLumberjack aka Felixia Banck ;)

I see your point about the lack of an ON/OFF switch but guess most regular battery power tools are also ON when the battery is fitted. However the chain is certainly dangerous and it probably feels more threatening when the saw is ON than most regular power tools. As you say, it does have a brake though and it's something a battery chainsaw owner really needs to use and pay more attention to. Thanks for the review. It's a lovely saw and you presented well.

I have one those the on off suitch is not the problem for me the real problem is that even with best battery your time cut is short.

I bought one of these to prepare wood for my woodlathe. Works great, no warm-up, less noise. One drawback I found is in the handle. When using the saw without gloves, you can pinch your skin while pressing the throttle. The chain is great, stays sharp for much longer. I don't miss an on-off switch at all!

I've had the MSA200c for nearly 4 years now, with two AP300s, been a brilliant wee saw. The chain is more of a fiddle to sharpen, but it also cuts the small stuff really well. I disagree about the lack of an off/on button - to me one of the main advantages of an electric saw is just picking it up and using it, without having to press a button and wait for a few seconds. I have the 82v Greenworks saw (I had the batteries for the PCW3000-Li winch) which has more power and a 3/8th chain but it is way less refined and a pain to use because of having to keep switching it on.

Good point about no on/off button and always using chain brake when not cutting.

Excellent review. I bought an MSA200C in 2019 to do quick yard and riding trail (through the woods) maintenance for convenience, though we also have 4 gas chainsaws (Including an MS261 which I agree is about the perfect saw) and a pole saw. The 200's been really convenient and remarkably capable. Since the beginning I wished it had a chain with bigger teeth. Sharpening it is like doing dental work on a chipmunk. From your review including the video demos we decided the MSA220CB with a 14" bar is a must have for us, so it's on order. Arrival date TBD. Thanks for the excellent objective input to our decision process.

I agree that some sort of safety/pilot light would be helpful for when the battery is fully seated and the saw is "ON" though popping the chain brake would remedy any accidental button presses. it wouldn't be an issue though as the very nice double battery retention system thing would let you rest/transport the saw with the battery popped up into the disconnected-but-still-retained-by-the-saw position and the light would be off and the saw would be "safe"

According to Stihl, the MSA-220C is rated at 1.8 kilowatts with an AP100 or AP200 battery and 2.1 kW with an AP300. Only one other battery chainsaw that's this light (5 to 5.5 kg) provides comparable power: the Greenworks 40V Gen. 2, a 16-inch saw rated at 1.8 kW of power and 1.6 newton-meters of torque with a 4AH or 5AH battery and probably 1.9 or 2.0 kW with an 8.0AH battery.

My Kobalt battery saw has the same problem- no on/off switch. For safety I "pop" the battery by pushing the thumb lever when I'm not cutting. This prevents the saw from starting but also means the battery can fall out.

Good review. My MSA220C runs much better on the AP300S battery than it does on the AP300. With the AP300 it runs, sort of. With the AP300S comes alive, hooks up and makes shavings. I don't need an "on" light. It would be redundant. The saw has an indicator that it's "on." The battery. If the battery is inserted, it's on. If you pick it up and it's heavy, it's because the battery is in it and it's on. That's as good as a light. Between the excellent chain brake, the button push safety on the trigger and the presence of the battery indicating it's on, I don't really see a safety problem.

I bought one if these 2 weeks ago with 2 of the big batteries. From fully charged I got 7 cuts before needing to replace the battery. The wood was probably about 12" diameter and is one of the Aussie hardwoods which can test a saw. Having cost me well over $1400 with the fast charger I admit to being very disappointed with it so far.

I personally favor the 161T and think it’s the over all best preformed battery saw by stihl, I was really excited about this saw and expected it to be insane but was slightly disappointed…. It’s a really good saw but it runs out of battery fast and doesn’t cut as fast as I was hoping… again it’s a great saw but maybe I had my expectations high from using the 161 so much

I have a really good local Stihl dealer so a visit to them is a must. Would you say this saw is similar to the 181 in terms of power etc? Another great review. You mentioned wanting a top handle version, does that mean the MSA 161 T you reviewed is not powerful enough? And what is the Orange and Black knob on the left hand side? (shown at 14:00) Lastly, if you want to clean your saws before doing a video then do it, do not let comments dictate how you make your videos, we all know you actually use your saws and in places most of us would never have the courage to use them, so great job.

Thank you very much for the review. I am still surprised at the prices of the battery. Saving 400-ish euro for a battery will get you a Very Long extension cord and make the saw lighter as well. Would it not be true that in most places where you can charge a battery you can also plug in an extension cord? That would save you a few hundred euro, and some of the environment, because Lithium mining is a pain for people and for the planet. I can imagine that climbing trees with a cord is not ideal, but do you not thing that for ground work it would be ideal? You may need some discipline to regularly check your oil, but beside that I think corded is a pretty decent option to save money and weight.

For ten-hour operation, you need two batteries (AP 300S) and two chargers - in case you need to recharge them quickly, and that's not little money. The chain is very fragile and you have to be very careful when sharpening it - it is easy to damage the teeth. In addition, it very quickly and easily jams on smaller branches and leaves that are pulled under the chain guard. I've been using this model for a long time and I have mixed feelings about it ... the MSA 161 T is a much better model, but it's also a different scope of work :)
