We review the the Stihl RMA 510 Battery Powered mower and push it to its limits to test the battery, cut quality & overall performance. Great video! This was so thorough and so helpful! My father in law, Phil Skowron, has an idea that he uses to help assist his thumbs with the lever that keeps the mower's motor running. Loosely tie a ziptie around one of the vertical aspects of the handle. When in use, can then slide it up and down the vertical handles and onto the upper/horizontal handle to help keep the lever engaged. It certainly saves on the thumbs!

Great Review. I have the same mower and love it! Self propelled is a must. As well as having two batteries. When one goes dead you can recharge it, keep cutting, and if you need it, will be charged when second battery goes dead. You can cut a lot with two batteries. You are right about handles being sore on the thumb. I use a quick tie on mine, so I tie it on the ON position and only worry about one handle. Works like a charm! Also, I never use Eco Mode. Just full speed. Love the mower!

So you use a quick release type of zip tie?? I was wondering how to solve that one huge problem regarding the handle that operates the blade. I can't understand why Stihl would make such a dumb design decision!

I would be open to getting one of these, but I dont see being able to cut several houses in a row without carrying a lot of batteries. ($$$$) I mow vacant rent houses for a couple of realtors. Some of them can be pretty bad, over 12". Ive got a feeling I wont even get a small backyard cut with this on a single battery. You cant get a riding mower in some of these back gates either. A walk behind is essential, and sometimes you gotta cut a jungle. With Honda stopping mower production, Cali completely banning gas lawn equipment soon to spread to other states, (Dallas, Texas is also phasing out/banning gas mowers) and the only thing available from the big boxes are junk with Briggs and Crappin engines that will be trash after one season (and the manufacturers know it), they are forcing people into batteries too early. For a homeowner these may be fine, but for someone like me, no. Not yet.

Yeah man I have a feeling I won't be able to mow my entire lawn with this... Takes like 30-35 minutes to mow it and with my luck it would run out of batteries right when I'm almost done lol

As its the first of February and I know it won't be much longer before the snow is gone and the grass is ready to be cut, I've been looking for a battery operated self-propelled mower. I have smaller hands and gripping the self-propelled on many mowers is challenging. You've convinced me to keep looking and pass on this model.

From the Stihl site: "With the 36-volt STIHL AP 300 battery, the RMA 510 V can mow up to 2,583 square feet on a single charge." Assume you live on a typical residential area which is 1/2 a block between streets and a 60' wide lots. - 1/2 block = 330' with two yards back to back /2 = 165' - Deduct 15' for 1/2 the width of the street = 150' - 150' x 60' = 9000 sq. ft. - Subtract 1300 square feet for the house and another 500 sq. ft. for the garage and we are at 7,200 sq. ft. - Subtract 10 x 75' = 750 sq. ft. for driveway and we are at 6450 sq. ft. -- Batteries required to mow the lawn once = 6450 sq. ft. / UP TO 2,583 sq. ft. per charge = at least 2.5, E.G. 3 batteries to mow the lawn once. The least expensive I found for AP 300 batteries is ~$200 in-hand, so add $400 to the price. Then you need to frog around and charge all 3, one at a time, and hope you remember to change them - This seems to indicate that battery powered mowers would only be useful for postage-stamp lots and those with very little grass for some reason. What am I missing?

You wouldn't need 3 batteries, 2 would be enough. When you swap to the 2nd one, you put the original on the charger. When the 2nd one is dead, the first should have enough charge to finish the job.

Nice review thanks, good to see how it handles a real bit of lawn. I was wondering if you had any issues releasing the self-propelled and pulling back? Other reviews mention this is an issue but most are a few years old. Is that still a problem? How much do you rely on the Self-propelled? (ie should I get the RMA510 instead :)

There does seem to be a bit of resistance if you release the self propelled and immediately pull back, but if you release and push forward a bit then you can pull back with no resistance. As far as how much I rely on the self propelled just depends on the yard. The machine is so light that you do not have to use it much honestly. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Yes, this is a flat lawn. My lawn is sloped, and usually l have to get the lawnmower at an angle to cut. And it take me about 2.5 hrs. to cut the grass at a time.

Brent, good show! I'll always ask, what's the price both mower and battery? Also, how many charges can you get before must buying anew battery. I found on my weed wacker after a two year use, twice a week using two batteries, both were dead in the third year. Also, can you charge using standard 120 wall outlet? I'll presume you get a charging cable with the mower?

Thank you and as Far as the prices go the mower goes for somewhere around $730 and the battery is around $250 and the charger is also separate and goes for around $100 as well. As far as complete battery life expectancy, I will have to get back with you on that one as I don't have information regarding this and not enough personal experience to answer the question. K Arthur, You must be keeping your batteries in a hot location if they are failing that soon. The AP300s battery is rated to 1500 charge and drain cycles and the rest are rated to 1200. Heat is a killer for batteries and I think frezzing temps may be bad too? (never had to think about it here in Sydney Australia) Make sure you keep your batteries in a cool place in your home whilst not in use during summer and they should last a lot longer.

From what I understand, the factory in China is completely owned and operated by Stihll, so the quality control appears to be pretty good and much better than the norm.

How's the bagging, specifically with numerous leaves? That's the one thing that keeps me from buying this...I've read several reviews advising that the suction is poor.

Absolutly correct! Mine won't pick up leaves or needles unless its on the second lowest setting; way too short for my climate.

This might work in California where the grass doesn't really grow in the desert. it would never really work in the southeast of the United States. The battery would never last long enough to cut a full yard weeks growth of lawn.
