Just got a brand new Stihl USG grinder and have never sharpened a chain before although I did watch a Stihl tech sharpen one in person. Please forgive any foolish questions I might ask. If your grinder is on a bench that is not level wouldn;t that electronic angle finder be inaccurate to measure the angle of the grinding wheel? Or did you first measure the angle of the base plate to confirm it is 0 degrees?

The angle finder has a 0° button so you place on any surface and zero it. In the case of the grinder, you place the angle finder on the bar rails of the grinder that's your 0° point in relation to the grinding wheel

Another great video Spanner , love my USG , needs a 2way motor so you can grind into the tooth both sides .

I found only some chains leave a burr, also some wheels are more prone to burrs also. Its a major job to put switch and strip the motor down. I will avoid that one.

Has anyone seen any difference if the teeth are ground towards the cutting edge versus away? Interesting issue. Some people, if their machine doesn’t have a reverse switch, reverse the rotation of the wheel with a drill to cut into the edge rather than away. Is it worth this effort in regard to sharpness and cutting effectiveness?

Yes it will leave a small burr but that burr is so thin edge that it really has very little effect on the sharpness. I look at this in a different way, a chainsaw needs constant sharpening so I don't go that extra mile to make my sharpening 100% accurate. If the chain is 95% sharp then it will cut well burr or no burr. I have Stihl FG 2 filing tool and you can sharpen the right side tooth from the outside to the Inside. I see no problem with this. While other will argue we are still talking about very small gain here. Many people have set ways to things but if the gains are small i will not bother to do that. In science which is my background we see very small gains in experimental works so we compromise and get a good ballance.

I made that. I used 1 inch solid bar drilled and taped then drilled 4 holes 90° apart with 8mm thread put bar an knob on. It really works good si fast and smooth ti use.

Probably made in China, packaged in Germany! If this type of quality is now made in Germany as a former german I'll be bitterly disappointed!

If made in China it will not be supervised by then. The Germans will supervise the quality build ect

Its a precise machine. Excellent quality. Complaining about something you very rarely adjust seems frivolous and same for 35 degrees not being "highlighted". Most of the time it's usually right in the middle between 30 and 40. Mine has a very obvious raised "dash" that anyone can find even if they are blind (braile).

@billclark8241 I will always complain even about my own equipment. There are always ways to improve things but that said manufacturers cut corners. Putting the on off switch behind the electrical lead is really a dumb idea. I used to be at the front before and was much better in that position for easy access.

@Maciej Jan Długosz you should email stihl and tell them joke joke. It's been 6 weeks since I sent email to Stihl and complained about scale mark being 2.5° out on back plate. Only got a email to say they have received my email. I don't think they will even look at the problem
